    Default Metal Mesh- WHERE?

I'm looking around to get some metal mesh material to craft onto my thongs and maybe make other things out of too- I think it just looks killer! If you dunno what I'm talking about you can search ebay for 'metal mesh' and see- it's usually used for purses, occassionally belts and tops too. Anyway though, I can't find ANYWHERE that sells the stuff! If I can't find a supplier or someone that makes lingerie with it I'm gonna have to resort to skinning some pretty purses lol Anyone have any idea where to get that stuff or find someone that works with it?

EDIT: Here's a link to see what it is http://cgi.ebay.com/BLACK-RAINBOW-ME...QQcmdZViewItem

Some people also call it chainmail; try searching for that.

Naw, chainmail is a bunch of connected rings -- that stuff I'm not sure where you'd get it. I would go to the fabric shop and ask if they know where to find it.

I know it's not real chainmail, but some people still call it that...I bought a set made of the stuff pictured above from La Vie en Rose and it was labeled 'Chainmail Set'.

Yeah I searched for chainmail too, turned up nothing but the dull interlocking rings stuff. *sigh* Dunno why nobody sells this stuff or makes more things out of it, I just think it's SO neat- it's feels all liquidy and cool and I think it sparkles better than anything else. Anyway I just ordered a lot of purses off ebay, as soon as they get here and I find my soldering iron there will be sacrifice! mwahaha
(if I make anything worth looking at I'll post pics)

You've got me wanting some now too! If you find a source of it by the yard, let me know, ok?

it's not metal at all. it's a new kind of sequined fabric. sequins discs are bonded to the material's surface rather than sewn on. i have the same stuff in my sewing closet right now. i made some stripper purses with it. you buy it by the yard at a fabric store. i got mine at joann's. it'll be in the "dance wear" or "special occasion" section.

I don't think that's what she's talking about. The sequined stuff if different. But she still might be able to find the metal mesh at Joanne's. I've seen it for sale before, but I don't remember where.... hmmmm.

Here you go...the company is called "Whiting and Davis". They sell the fabric by the yard.

Wow, you win! How did you find them?

I will happily go in on a wholesale order if they have a large minimum.

I hate this fabric. It's itchy and snags on just about anything and the sequins do fall off rather quickly even with the bonding. It's also not new...I bought my Easter Bunny outift made of this at least 7 years ago.

Purses made out of that are fine, but clothing? Not so much.

The metal mesh however feels wonderful. Smooth and cool and just feels so silky against your skin. I had a tube top made of this and it was great.

That glue-on sequin fabric is neither it nor is it 'new'. I hate it too, those things get everywhere.

    Glad I could help

I used to design and make costumes, in the way-back. I haven't worked with this particular material, so I don't have any advice to offer as far as that goes but I'll bet if you contact the company they could give you some tips.

    It *is* really cool stuff

Well damn, ya found it after I bought my sacrificial purses lol. Thanks tho, if the crafts come out well I might need to order from them to make bigger pieces. I wonder how much we'd have to buy from them too...

They emailed me back -- minimum order is $250. It comes as panels of different sizes, not by the yard. I suppose a panel could make a pretty cool bikini top/carwash skirt set? You could get a lot of thongs out of it, that's for sure. I'm trying to think of what I'd want to make with it. I think you would have to back it with a lightweight liner 'cause metal is cold and might pinch.

    Oh wow, that ain't cheap. A 18" x 24" panel is $130?? That's tiny!

Sacrificial purses suddenly seems more like it!

Egads, true dat! Glad I moved on ebay when I did considering this- 9 bucks in all for 2 medium purses, and this awesome seller threw in 4 free ones!! So I've got white, gold, silver, black, gray, and beige- the black, silver, and gold are SUPER flashy. Happy camper yupyup :]

FYI in addition to possible pinchiness, the material alone isn't quite opaque, so I'm planning to just overlay it onto my t-backs somehow, and then make various matching jewelry outta the scraps. I think the size purses I got will be sufficient to make one t-back and jewelry set from each. Gonna start with the beige one (least pretty IMHO) as I expect to make a mess of things on the first try.

I'm not opposed to making just one totally fucking awesome costume out of the stuff. It would be worth a couple of hundred bucks I think. Like a fringed top and short skirt where the fringe is slender panels? It would move awesomely on stage.

Yeah, it'd be hard to match up enough purses for a project like that lol I'm happy to try the stuff out with my small cheap batch though, see how easy it is to work with and what kind of response I get before I throw down serious dosh. In case anyone else is trying it, I skinned all my purses just now, not nearly as hard as I'd thought it would be. Just used a kitchen paring knife and gently skinned it off (it CAN tear under enough pressure) like trimming fat off a brisket. And a side perk to purses is that they have great matching strap/zipper hardware too- needlenose pliers and an adjustable wrench got those off easy. Instant necklaces/bracelets/anklets/bellychains, or a halter strap with a lil work. The linked site suggests using an awl to 'cut' the stuff (by opening the spiders in a row from the back), but I'm hoping a slim metal knitting needle will suffice... And the stuff was just sewn onto the purses with heavy thread so, I'll try to reattach it with same.
