What do you think about lawyers?

    Do they contribute to "Justice"

What accounts for the cynicism with which they are viewed?

The cynicism is brought on b/c our society is far too litigious. And as long as there is a demand for stupid lawsuits, there will be a supply of money-hungry idiots trying to get their share. But as with all groups of people .....there are good and there are bad.

    kidding, kidding.

Seriously, the few give the rest a bad name. It's just that the few tend to be very visible. But most lawyers tend to be good people.

You can't hate someone for doing their job is the way I view it. I guess morals come into play which is why I'm very iffy with starting a career as a criminal defense attorney. I'd like to think I have morals but sometimes being a defense attorney would make you forget about those.

I like lawyers. Especially with BBQ sauce.

Once you get past the silly idea that law, as practiced, is about Justice or logic (how can *I* be convicted of giving a bribe that you've been acquitted of accepting?), it all make sense.

Lawyers are for hire, which puts them in the same boat as mercenaries, hitmen, etc.

Well, lawyers have an understanding of the law. We need them to help guide us in our legal endeavors. That's how they contribute to "justice". But, they also know how to play the system... (aka, not always "justice").

I never really understood all the lawyer jokes.

I think it would be kind of hypocritical for dancers to hate on lawyers for the reasons most people hate lawyers. I mean, how many times have WE been called money-hunger or immoral by the public?

People can pay a lawyer to do their bidding, which all too often includes frivolous lawsuits and finding every loophole possible. A lawyer's job is to find legal favor of the client, regardless of the client's innocense, motives, etc. The lawyer is just doing what s/he is paid to do, like mercenaries who work for Columbian drug lords. Therefore, the association with lawyers comes from their jobs.

I think like most anyone else there both good people and bad people who go into law. The good ones go into to help aid in ethical justice. The bad ones go into it trying get rich.

I think it is the second group that accounts for the cynical view of lawyers.

Riiiight. That make much more sense. It's called "a job." People pay you and you do work. I would say that the majority of lawyers work within the legal limits of their profession, which you'll be interested to know includes a useful principle in which the lawyers on each side act as advocates for their clients. Did you have a better system in mind? Maybe trial by ordeal?

I wasn't suggesting that they go outside the realm of the law, or that there is a better alternative. I'm simply saying that they get their bad reputation from doing what they are being paid to do. Everyone has the right to be defended and given a fair trial, even rapists, murderers, and Enron executives.

Also, who is to judge who is a bad lawyer? It's a job. I'm going into nursing for the money and stability, not becuase I'm some doormat angel of mercy. We're strippers not because we're exhibitionist narcissists, but because it's good money with opportunities and flexibility.

Like in law school we talk about these cases where murderers and people who rape kids go free because of a technicality... but then if you react with outrage then it's the profession's position is that maybe you wouldn't make a good lawyer because the only thing that matters is the black letter law, and if you have a problem with that then you are naiive, non-legal, your thinking is irrelevant.

I think we are an ultra-litigious society, and lawyers are a product of that. We arent an ultra-litigious society because of lawyers.

If many people werent so ready to sue at the drop of a hat, there wouldnt be so many career lawyers.

We may rail all we want about lawyers and frivilous lawsuits and all that, but when we find we need one, we are damn glad they are around.

    Perhaps that was the point.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I think lawyers are trained debators without true understanding of their craft or it's implications. I hate lawyers.

No, they don't contribute to justice. Matter of fact they contribute to it's destruction, even though justice is just false ideology and not something real. Lawyers constant interpretations and re-interpretations of the law manipulate the very laws they try to enforce. This makes the legal system even more vague. I hate the legal system as well.

So what? Who among us isn't biased about this shit. Me I'm cynical about them because I was sold out by one. He took my money and never showed up to court, he didn't do anything for me which I couldn't have done myself. Which was look like an asshole in front of the judge, resetting the case and still having no tangible representation the second time. I have alot of things which I could go into, but basically I don't believe anything a lawyer says. They can twist everything around in a manner which can leave you feeling unprepared, and do so casually, and when beat at their own game think a compliment on your legal acumen or debating skills should be enough to settle the matter. Fuck lawyers!

Lawyers are really bad until you need one. Then, of course, you deserve the best.

The law is like a garden. Always growing, changing blooming and sometimes dying. Lawyers are gardeners. They help pull the weeds and keep the plants healthy. Not all gardeners are good at their jobs.

Laws are what we agree they are. Lawyers give clarity to what we already agree to, or set the record straight for those who disagree.

Laws are subjective and slippery. I'm glad we are settling our differences (no matter how petty) in a court room instead of with weapons and fire power.

no one likes to lose... and that's where the cynicism comes from... if you lose, lawyers suck. if you win, woo hoo!

the money lawyers get = danger money for putting up with law school. and the whingers should try it before they begrudge the fees.
