    Default Lexapro question

I was put on Lexapro before I left for vaca. I'm taking 10 mg. I'm on day 4 and I already feel a difference and sorta have since day 2.

Only side effects I've had are dry mouth and some TMJ..oh and I fall asleep quickly after taking it.

I was reading up on it, and I see weight gain is a major issue .

Now people said the same shit about paxil but I didn't gain on that.

So this is going to sound really retarded, but how the hell does it make you gain weight?

The reason i ask this is because it's not as simple question for me to really come up with an answer for.

With B.C. pills weight gain seems to happen due to the levels of estrogen ( water gain etc. )

But with anti depressents etc...there are no hormones so what is it?

Im wondering if it's causing people that don't eat when depressed or have anxiety to want to eat now, or if it causes cravings?

Anyone wanna enlighten me ? Im bored to death and all the googling I do just ends up giving the basic info.

From what I've been reading is that it works by slowing down the metabolism (which is why you want to go to sleep so soon after taking it). Having it slow down the metabolism is bad because that's when you gain weight. They don't know how long after you stop taking the pill it keeps your metabolism suppressed.

Just wanted to add that you will not be able to tell if it's even helping you for a couple of weeks. (As told to me by the doctor prescribing it). It needs time to work it's way into your system.

It doesn't affect my weight one bit; never did, and I took it for a long time, so I'm here to tell you there's no guarantee it will. If you didn't gain on Paxil I bet you won't on Lexapro, either.

Also it will make you less irritable and won't kill your sex drive, so I think it's pretty good stuff.

Lexapro doesnt make me tired. I take it in the morning. I take bc also. I have gained some weight. I dont mean to scare u, I think for everyone, their body response is different. Lexapro is just about the only antidepressant that works for me..So weight gain or not, I am going to continue to take it.

I took Lexapro for almost a year. The weight gain issues is a body chemistry thing. Certain people are predisposed chemically for this to happen. Lexapro, or any SSRI for that matter, indirectly effects the way other systems in your body work. Everyone's chemistry is different, therefore it doesn't effect everyone the same. A good article I found that disccuses the various causes can be read here:

I personally didn't have a weight gain issue, but I already have an abonormally high metabolism.

I acknowledge that my doctor told me the same thing that CorsicaFire stated. But I expreienced the same thing as Tart. I can't quite describe it, but something was "different" after taking it the 2nd day.

Lexapro is actually the "good half" of Celexxa. It's supposed to have all the benefits, but none of the side effects that Celexxa had. The only negative side effects that I experienced were crazy and vivid dreams. Sometimes I would wake up, and it would take awhile before I could discren between what had happened and what was a dream. Nightmares were especially bad, which is finally what led me to stop.

I haven't been on an AntiDepressant in almost 4 years now. It turns out I actually had a severe case of ADD, and depression, stress, anxiety, negativity, etc were all comorbrid effects that developed from the ADD not being treated. So I finally got a proper DX at age 29, and 40mg of Adderall XR once a day has made a big difference.

^ I have noticed an immediate difference. All for the better I may add. The first few nights I took it , it knocked me out right away. It does make me stay asleep longer and I can't be disturbed. Which THANK GOD!

I haven't noticed a huge difference, that obviously will come with time. But I have noticed enough to say yes by day 2 I could feel something working.

the dreams I can relate to, if I'm woken up then Im not sure when Im back asleep and when I'm dreaming again. I went through that today until I was all the way out of the bed.

    Very interesting.

I won't say they are nightmares but they are odd.

Mongolians and Nazis .. no clue on that.

I did not gain weight on Lexapro but I did stop taking it. It was a bad drug for me, and it made me very spaced out, unable to concentrate, and unable to make decesions. I now just take valium whenever I feel like I might be having a panic attack, which is only once or twice a month. Lexapro actually made me not hungry ... well, it made me not have any feelings in general I guess. I hated it

Lexapro made weightloss harder for me. I didnt "gain" weight but I did notice that my metabloism was slower.

I had to start taking it due to school stress, work, and the salon that I own. (too many things at once!)

It stopped my panic attacks completely (knock on wood) but I did/do hate how hard it was for me to lose weight. I had to get on a strict diet in order to lose the10 pain-in-the-ass lbs that I had gained.

I hope the Lexapro works for you. I had a dry mouth all the time while I took it. I ended up getting a few cavaties (sp?) because I wasn't careful enough about drinking water. I didn't gain weight though.

Sorry to bump, but I'm on day 4 of Lexapro. I haven't really noticed any difference except that I'm not "as" cry-babyish as normal. I'm still stressed, and worried about everything else that is going on in my life.

I have noticed that I've been having odd dreams. Not necessarily nightmares, just odd to the point where when I wake up in the morning, I'm thinking, "now what the hell was that all about"

Oh yea, and last night while I was getting ready for bed, it seemed like my left eye was fluttering and there was a white light. Anyone else have that before? It only lasted about 20 seconds but still through me off guard.

I never had the fluttering you are talking about but YES about the dreams. They arent scary or anything, just weeeeird. And since I have been on this (over 6 months) I have always remembered my dreams. Before, I didnt remember much but Lex has helped with that. lol

Yup I remember my dreams also, and it great detail. On Paxil that happened also, they were so vivid and were about current everyday situations, I would get up and wonder if I was dreaming or not.

^ I just asked Chris and he said I did sweat while on it at night.

I don't know I had horrible side effects. But the dreams were intense

I took Lexapro for about 5 months for anxiety and I'd have crazy vivid dreams, I'd sleep less (or wake up often) and I'd sweat like crazy in my sleep. I'd be almost as wet with sweat as if I'd just gotten out of the shower without drying off.

It also seemed to dull my personality. I know I wasn't as vivacious as normal. I almost felt too laid back. Sometimes I wanted a bit of anxiety back for times like when I was running late and needed to hurry up or other times when anxiety can be helpful LOL. Maybe I just wasn't used to not having anxiety all the time heh...maybe that's what normal people are like lol.

I stopped taking it due to the cost. I'm considering getting back on it, but maybe taking a lower dose (I was on 10mg/day).

^^I think 10mg is the lowest dose, unless you split that in half. My doc is giving me free samples, my docters office has a ton of samples woohoo!

I think 10mg is the lowest dose too. Splitting them in half is exactly what I was thinking of doing
