    Default Offensive?

I'm at this coffee shop with internet and they have a little sign advertising it that says "Our Internet... faster than a hooker to the clinic." I'm pissed about it. I said something to the counter girl and she said she finds it offensive too, but no one listens to her.

Am I over reacting? Should I write a letter to whoever's in charge of the signage? Cover it up with some kinda creative statement of protest? Do nothing?

If they've got a sign like that still up over the objections of an offended female employee, they've already set themselves up for a lawsuit and/or EEOC action. She has a lot more power than she apparently realizes.

It's painted on the wall, so I can't rip it down.

I just noticed there's another one that says "faster than a john in a sting," which I guess might make it a little more balanced. But not really.

This is like, THE liberal coffee shop with organic vegan soups an stuff. They should totally know better.

    Soo.... what should I do?

yea, you have every right to be offended. i am too, although, im so tired that at first i thought, "huhhh? ohhhh..." lol.

oooh, they totally thought they were being creatively cool. but we know better. ask for the manager's name, and the employee's name who complained but said they didn't listen to her, and call tomorrow to speak with the mgr. say that they have set themselves up for a good lawsuit. that usually gets ppl's attn.

    Love it!

Yea thats offensive. Can't think of anything else than to advertise with than those words? I see they lack creativity and common sense. If I were you I would make it a point to let them know its offensive. ^^Chrissy68 has the right idea.

I am offended by ridiculous litigation over what someone else thinks is offensive. Should they have more business savvy than to post something like that? In this day & age, yes. However, that doesn't make the entire thing any less inane. Personally, I'd just tell the owner if I thought it was offensive, or, alter the sign for my own amusement. Or better yet, cease to give them my business after telling them exactly why. Lawsuits are out of hand. God forbid someone says something anyone else finds offensive. Call the thought police, quick!

It's not just offensive, it's degrading. You don't degrade women like that, hookers or not. It's unfair to treat a sex-worker like she's some disgusting sleeze because of what she does. Even if she has sex with customers as a prostitute, it's no degrading because it also ASSUMES all prostitutes are dirty filthy cumbags... which is really putting a bad light on all working women.

Not all hookers are women, though.

i think it is funny, but distastefully displayed. i don't think it is appropriate for public display like that. some people are too young for that kind of crude humour and not many people think it is funny.

they should paint over it and put something in better taste on the wall.

    just my opinion.

Im not actually offended by it though I think both comments are in poor taste. But I opt for the covering it up creativly option or adding some sort of sarcastic / funny comment to it or to the cafe generally. Ive done this a couple of times and its fun too!

    Alter it.

Have someone stand it front of you somehow, pretend to be having a conversation, undecided as to what to get, whatever.

You will need fast drying but tough paint. Plan it in advance and practice on cardboard. Keep it simple. Continue the blocking ploy until it's almost completely dry.

Here's what you do, it'll be quickest and easiest--paint over the 'er' in hooker, change the 'clinic' to 'dick'. 'clinic' is shaped almost exactly the same as 'dick'. Make the 'ic' into a 'k' by adding to the top of the 'i'. Extend the open ends of the 'c' to the 'l' and it's an instant 'd'. The hardest part will be changing the 'n' to a 'c'.

So it'll say "faster than a hook to the dick". That should make the guy (who the fuck else would write that) wince immediately.

^^^ Lol, great tips Djoser! If you feel to "obvious" doing that though, self made stickers are also an option. You can make funny slogans and stick them all over the place descretely. I recomend brightly coloured ones (-:

    How about....

    Our Internet----Faster than a Stripper Grabs a $20
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

I find the humor in it, but can certainly see how people would be offended by it.

Though there is a thing such as free speech that comes to mind here, where does it stop? Where does the line of you are offended vs. free speech come into play?

I agree that lawsuits are silly, BTW. If you're that offended and they won't change it, then just stop going there. But it's stupid for them not to realize their own vulnerability in this day and age; that one offended female employee could sue them into last year if she wanted to.

I don't think it is appropriate for public display. I can see the scenario of a mom going in with her kid, and the kida asking "What's a hooker?"

Anyway it is degrading. What would the response be if they painted up "Faster than a Hindu on a chicken"

If I came across something at a business I found offensive, I'd simply quit taking my business there. Its the ultimate form of protest and since the existence of business is dependent upon people spending money there, its the only effective one.

As far as suggestions in destroying, removing or altering the sign, um no. That would be vandalism. No different than religious zealots who go into Borders or Barnes & Noble and destroy Jock Sturges' photography books because they consider them child pornography.

    That's so tacky!
Honestly, I would stop going and write a letter to corprate and CC it to the manager of the store stating EXACTLY why you refuse to do business there.

It's creating a hostile work environment for the female employees, and we have this weird idea that people's right to go to work is more important than other's people's rights to be sexist.

Keep in mind that the only reasons suits targeting behaviour such as the above exist is because people engaging in that behaviour refuse to stop; the suit can be just as easily avoided by the business by not having sexist signs. I mean the "I didn't realize it was sexist and offensive" only works until someone TELLS them.

While I don't exactly love the message I can see how some people would find humor in the signs.

This seems to me to be a free speech issue. Doesn't the business have a right to put what they want on their own walls?

I would suggest using your own right to express your opinion about the signs and then see what happens. Maybe even go as far as to speak to the employees and see if it offends and present that to the business owner or manager as well.

If they do not remove the signs after that and it really bothers you that much then I would just take your business somewhere else.
