    Default Advice on Wigs?

I want to buy a wig for dancing, to help me feel a bit "disguised" so I don't worry too much about being busted.

Any advice on what to look for in a wig? Also any tips or hints on how to wear it/care for it/stop it falling off would be much appreciated.

Apologies if this topic has been covered in the forums already, I did do a search but I may not have done it properly.... *puppy eyes*

I wear wigs at workalways. I put on a stocking cap to protect my natural hair, then put on the wig. Alot of newer wigs come with attached w/ a mini comb in the front and back to help secure it better. I secure with the comb, and I sometimes put a few bobby pins in just for safe keeping.

I try to go with wigs that look most natrual. For me, that means I can't do the wigs with the headband. Not me..I also don't like bangs, so again I don't go this route either. Go to the hair supply store and try on a few (for sanitary reasons you'll have to purchase a stocking cap)

Did you go yet? How did your experience turn out? The thing I love most about wigs is the versatility. You can become anyone you want in a wig!

As far as what to look for in a wig, I always make sure that the hair isn't too sparse on it. Theres some reeeally cheap wigs out there with hardly any hair. When worn, they'll make you look like you have bald spots. 2nd thing I look for of course is that it flatters me. You can always try wigs on in the shop before buying.

When wearing them to work, I never use nylon stocking caps since they make my head sweat too much. Instead I wind my hair in pin curls, bobby pin my hair, and then bobby pin the wig in place. I use larger bobby pins since they're stronger, and tons of them at that.

I shampoo and condition my wigs as I would real hair. Not while I'm wearing them though : P. Theres alcohol and lanolin based wig sprays which you can buy at any wig store. They restore the shine of wigs and help detangle them.

To prevent them from getting tangled, you can place them on styrofoam heads.

OMG I went rather badly. I tried on sooo many wigs and they just didn't look right. They all looked, well, like wigs! I tried to stores in my neighborhood, one of them had fairly reasonably priced wigs which were just, not quite right. The hair looked so fake for some reason, I think that the lady who was helping me didn't really know much about styles and colours so I kept ending up with stuff that didn't suit me.

The second store was very good and i found a couple that looked alright but they were reeeeally pricey. Like $300-800! Cripes! And I still didn't feel like they looked like real hair. Every time I took one off I was more and more happy with how my own hair looks. I guess I just have good hair and I need to realise wigs will never look quite as good. I think I'll go without a wig - which is a little scary but buggerit, if I get busted I get busted! I don't think the wig would've been much of a disguise anyway!

Thanks so much for the tips CK and dolly, maybe when I'm rich! Really appreciate the good help though

^^Was the hair synthetic or human? If you find a wig that you think could look good on you but maybe just needs some tweeking that's ok. I've bought wigs that I felt had potencial to my hairstlylist so she could cut/style them to fit me...

You could always buy a wig online too. Also, you dont need to spend $300+ for a dam wig...well unless it's a lacefront.

I think all the wigs I tried were synthetic, some better than others and the ones at the second store were quite good, but I just can't get past the "wiggy" part-lines! And my natural hair was always a wee bit visible right on the hairline.

I'm not sure about buying online, I mean some of the wigs I tried on looked great on the mannequin but when they were on me they looked awful! I can't imagine trying to find something suitable based on a picture alone.

I think maybe they're just not for me. Or else it's too 'spensive.

Thanks for the suggestions though! You rawk.
