Post Mayan Doomsday? Real or Fake?

    http://www.armageddononline.org/mayan.php
So who here believes that December 12th, 2012 is the last day on Earth?

According to the Mayans, thats the day that we die, and supposedly the Earth's Magnetic Field will flip, causing chaos and weather similiar to the movie "The Day after Tomorrow."

Anyone else find this interesting? I wonder what is going to happen, its about 5.5 years away.

Back in the 1970's, California was supposed to slide into the ocean by a certain date - I forget when. Just a few years ago, Y2K was supposed to bring about Armageddon.

I generally like to wait until the day after to see what's happened. I'll get back to you guys on 12/13/2012.

The Mayan calendar goes by seasons, and that date marks the end of a season, so it would be fair to say that could be the reason their calendar stops there. The Mayans never predicted it, their calendar simply stopped there, and we said it was doomsday. No ones calender goes on forever, especially hundreds of years into the future.

I watched a TV show about this a while back, but I ended up changing it because it had such a... "We're going to die"... tone about it.

No, no, no, no,no. It's not the end it's the beginning! That's the day the aliens that built the pyramids are going to return, and start a whole new era of humanity.

We will be returned to eden.

I don't. It's just when the calendar was intended to start over again. Was there something cataclysmic about it's starting day 8/11/3114 BC(E)?

If it's one of those things where it's because the date is 12/12/12...what makes 2012 so special...why didn't the world end in 1912, 1812, etc.?

I'm of the belief that the world will end...when it does. And whatever form of being I am when it does, I probably wouldn't notice because it will be over quick.

Coast-to-Coast is now hosted by George Noory most of the time, although Art Bell still hosts on the weekends when he feels like it (he is semi-retired).

Incidentally, the earth's magnetic field has indeed been shifting and this is a concern to much of the scientific community... I was just reading about that somewhere, can't remember where.

yes, I read that too recently...I'm not sure where either...I think I may have read something about it on space.com

I've seen references to a solar shift in polarity, and a shift in the Earth's polarity, either or both in 2012, whichever you might believe. I thought the statements came from rather gadly sources for it (and my apology to anyone here who accepts those sources as gospel).

A couple of those claims say that NASA is predicting a solar/terran/takeyourpick shift in polarity in 2012. A quick search of the NASA site didn't reveal anything that stood out. I'd be a bit surprised if NASA claimed to be so specific about such an event.

Isn't there some huge asteroid that's supposed to come really close to us in 2012? or maybe it's 2036.

...NOVA did a story on the magnetic shift but they didn't predicted a date.

^^I saw a National Geographic special about an impending shift in the earth's magnetic field. The scientist were more excited about it than afraid (like they are with global warming). Basically, when it happens the worst that can happen is that navigational equipment is going to be useless for a short time (could be hours or could be days) and when the shift is complete magnetic north will be centered in Antarctica.

The shift is supposed to be quick, but there will be signs leading up to it, like being able to see the aurora borealis at points near the equator. Scientist should be able to fairly accurately predict the shift to minimize any danger that maybe encountered by the use of navigational devices that so much of our transportation is dependent on. (I think they will be able to track the shift like NWS can track hurricanes, but don't quote me on that).

Basically, of all things to freak out about, polar magnetic shift should be pretty low on anyones list.

Wow, that's so not what I read. I read that the magnetic shift would mean that the atmosphere will no longer protect us from radioactive cosmic rays. That would mean that we'd all be shredded to the molecular level and life would cease to exist on this planet.

I believe it'll probably be the end of something. An era, life on earth... who knows? And who cares? Anyone could die anytime, just keep living your life and being happy.

It's not just the Mayans. Webbot, I Ching, Merlin and a few others predicted this date. Thank you, History Channel, for scaring the fuck out of me.

Nah, I saw the same show as Paris. It won't be the cataclysmic end of he world. It happened before as a matter of fact.

Nooooo on the end-of-life scenario. Geomagnetic reversal has happened a number of times and, in fact, is used to help date fossils. Here's an article:

Taking one excerpt: "... Homo erectus and their ancestors certainly survived many previous reversals."
