    Default IUDs or Diaphragms?

I'm basically looking for answers or personal experiences of any of you women that use IUDs or Diaphragms / shields ect. I cannot take any form of birth control, my body has thus far reacted horribly to every form I've taken. (patch, nuvaring, and 3 types of pills) I get so nauseated and I cannot keep it down. ever.

I currently and have used condoms. I hate them! They leave me feeling raw and chaffed, and Im not allergic to latex. I've researched them both loosely, and am mostly looking for personal experience / suggestions. Im currently leaning more toward the diaphragm.

    Thanks Bunches!!

bummer, it seems like "search" is not working right now because we have quite a few threads on iuds especially in body business. I'll see if I can find the most recent one. I've never really seen much discussion here on the diaphragm though.

Gee this thread makes it scary,
So what happens if you get an infection with your IUD in place? What happens If the guy knocks it out of place?

    I have the copper one.

It depends on what kind of infection you have...if you get PID they probably take it out. I'm not really sure what happens if you get chlamydia or something...it probably depends but I really don't know.

If it's properly placed then it shouldn't be "knocked" out of place...I couldn't tell that mine was out of place it was only discovered during my annual exam.

    I use the Ladycomp.

I hate condoms. The pill killed my sex drive completely. And depo made me hella sick. I never liked the idea of surgery and all of the risks involved with the IUD scared me.

Good luck getting an IUD without having children.

A guy cannot "knock" the IUD out of place. If it's in place, it's inside your uterus and your cervix blocks his penis. Some very well-endowed men can feel the little string that hangs out of your cervix, but if any part of your IUD is protruding from the cervix, it's already expelled and not working.

If you get the IUD, make sure it's the plain copper one. The plastic ones work with the same hormones found in birth control pills, so if the pill makes you sick, then the plastic IUD probably will too. The plain copper one has no hormones. However, there's a good chance you'll expel the IUD if you've never been pregnant. I went through hell and high water to get my IUD and ignored everyone who said I'd expel it; sure enough, within a week it was sticking out and I had to have it removed. Whole hell of a lot of pain and expense for nothing.

If condoms are chafing and irritating you and you know you're not allergic to latex, you could be allergic to nonoxynol-9, the spermicide found in most condoms. Get some condoms without spermicide and see if that works better. I'm personally allergic to nonoxynol-9, so I know how irritating it can be. I still find plain condoms annoying, but at least they don't leave me in pain.

I've never used a diaphragm. I wouldn't even know where to get one... Planned Parenthood, I guess?

just wanted to point out that mine was not sticking out. my practitioner only knew it was out of place because the string was "missing." I know, I know, you're supposed to check for it every month but I'll be honest, I never do. My man complaining about feeling the string was enough check for me (or so I thought.)

Very helpful advice! I'll have to look into that.

Im mostly paranoid about expelling it, or having it permanently mess up my fertility. I called up my mom, and apparently she had used an IUD but and here I sit. She also said that diaphragms suck, and they have a higher chance of pregnancy.

I also had no idea, that unless you've previously been pregnant its liklihood of being expelled is 10x greater. ugh.

And I did try to search and the stupid thing wasn't working. grr

The plastic ones work with the same hormones found in birth control pills, so if the pill makes you sick, then the plastic IUD probably will too.
That wasn't the case with me and my doctor explained it like this. The hormone level in the Mirena IUD is not only very low but also is directly in your uterus. Therefore, it doesn't affect your body as if you had taken it orally or through your bloodstream.

I have had migraines with every single type of pill I've ever tried, even the one that had only one hormone in a very low dose. I have had my IUD over four years and haven't had that problem at all.

It did hurt like hell going in and at first I thought I might expel it because it felt like I was in labor or something. I've never been pregnant so I don't know for sure what that feels like, but lets just say it hurt. But now four years later it's still there.

I think the IUD is much more effective than the diaphragm, plus you don't have to do anything but check that it's still there. The life of the Mirena like I have with the hormones is supposed to be five years but I was told by a doctor that it actually is effective as birth control for ten but the hormonal effect wears off after five. I'll have had mine five years in October 2007 and I still hardly get any kind of peroid whatsoever.

I did get chlamydia after getting my IUD. Figures the one guy I really trust I sleep with (and stay with for over three years) is the one who gives me an STD, and he swore he was clean. It's very important if you have one to be 100% sure who you are with has no STDs because an IUD puts you at higher risk for contracting something. I was lucky that it was just chlymydia and I just had to take antibiotics.

I just bought a diaphragm last week. Havn't had a chance to use it, and am a little weary of the spermicidal junk you have to put on with it (I get the yeasties easily), but I'll let you know when I get a chance to use it.

Aislin, I'd like to know more about that ladycomp thing. Is it really as easy as the website makes it sound? How accurate do you really think it is?
