OMG I used to be a Diet Coke addict, then one day not too long ago I bought a pack of Perrier.
It worked wonders...and I was/am a caffeine junkie. I wish we had sparkling water at the club, because I am a huge fan now. But it has to be sparkling mineral water in a glass bottle for me. Water out of a can seems weird to me.
its funny i just sat down at the computer having just cracked open a fresh can of diet coke. i belive there is truth in that study but for me diet coke keeps me thin becuse i am a pop addict.
Oh great, I've got 3 empty diet cherry coke cans sitting next to me. That's just since today, and its only noon! I probably drink 10 diet cokes a day, average.
But, as with any study, correlation does not imply causation. These cokes do not have any carbs or calories so they can not be directly causing any weight gain. As the article says, they may be promising the body sweetness but not delivering, thus increasing a craving for sweetness---But as long as I don't give in to that craving I can't gain weight from calories that don't exist! There's no sweets in my pantry so I think I'm okay.

I just hate how they make my teeth feel shitty and make my stomach burn.
I believe that some people have problems where their body reacts to artificial sugar in the same way it does to regular sugar. This could be one reason.
I drink tons of diet soda and I have to stuff myself to stay at 105lbs. Depends on the person.
I do have to brush my teeth and tongue often though if I dont get in enough water to counteract the soda.

I've heard for a long time that it was theorized that aspartame increases your appetite, but for me, it's not true. I've been drinking diet drinks for 9 years since I'm such a soda fiend and realized that everytime I drank a can it was 250 calories. At four cans a day, that's 1000 calories! I used to hate the way diet sodas tasted, but now that I've crossed over, I can't stand the way normal drinks taste. They're like syrup-yuck...![]()
"Fowler is quick to note that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity. More likely, she says, it shows that something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity. 'One possible part of the explanation is that people who see they are beginning to gain weight may be more likely to switch from regular to diet soda,' Fowler suggests. 'But despite their switching, their weight may continue to grow for other reasons. So diet soft-drink use is a marker for overweight and obesity.'"
I've noticed a lot of overweight people will order diet soda. Like, they really think it's going to make up for that cheeseburger??
I'll drink diet soda for a mild dose of caffene. It's not good for you, still.
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.

Hmm,thanks for the article,Vyanka! The only thing I've heard about sweeteners like aspartame is that it causes water retension and depression in some people (maybe splenda is different?).I was going to ask if that would apply to diet drinks and flavored waters that are not carbonated like soda, but I guess I answered my own question, they use the same kind of sweeteners. It's a shame if it's actually true, since I found it difficult just to drink plain water,I prefer some flavor and sweetness in a drink, and cannot stand real sugar.

It's Fox News. I'd take anything they say with a grain of salt. Actually, make that a salt pillar.
Did they ever consider that it's mostly overweight people who drink diet soda in the first place? Proof of the causal link is missing.
Yeah, other studies have shown this before.
I stick with water.
Hmm, I don't know. This is REALLY bad and I do drink water do, but I drink a 64 ounce (yes, I know it's bad) about every other day, maybe more. I also drink jack daniels and diet coke when I go out, so that's even more diet coke. I have not ever been obese.
However, I do know that a lot of people think it's okay to eat a big burger with a diet coke, because the soda has no calories... I eat at fast food resturaunts all the time and I'll be giggling to myself because I hear people order A double burger large fries apple pie and oh yeah, a diet coke... WTF?? I'll take a small burger or a salad with my D.C., lol!
I have seen articles like this before. All I can say is that I have been drinking diet soda for years and I am not gaining weight. Most people I know who drink regular soda are heavier than I am.
You can't just drink diet soda and think it's a ticket to wieght loss. You have to be conscious of the amount and quality of food you are taking in. Most people I know have totally skewed ideas of what is "healthy" and how many calories certain foods have, and I imagine a lot of diet soda drinkers are in this boat.
I will not trust Fox News as they can't spell Barack or Osama correctly. And they announced that Bush was president before he won. And they announced the Pope was dead about four days before he died.

^^Whoah, I've heard of the brain tumor thing, but surely not all of that. I was under the impression that it was not true?? Where'd you get this info from?

Wow. ArmySGT., where did you get that info from? Interesting.![]()

This is what snopes has to say though.
The only other site that supports what snopes is saying.
Then there are the 40 + pages with all manner of claims of aspartame poisoning.
Google Aspartame poisoing.

Think about all the ailments everyone here has been talking about lately. What group would use the most diet products? A group highly competitive in all aspects of beauty and attraction. Such as this little community?
A lot of those symptoms do sound like those associated with eating disorders: rapid heart beat, dizziness, depression, irritability, personality changes, insomnia...
I have low blood pressure and lots of hairI have suffered from depression but I first felt depressed at age 10 (before I started drinking diet soda). I do have sleep problems but I also had those as a kid. I have a crazy good memory, my speech isn't slurred, I haven't gotten an infection in ages..
Most of the people I know who have migraines are regular aspartame users. I know someone who has seizures just about every day and I'm pretty sure she's not a diet soda drinker. The one person I know of who died of a brain tumor had no access to aspartame. Of course all of that is anecdotal, but I'll bet a lot of the "studies" done aren't much more scientific.
I tend to believe Snopes. They have not steered me wrong in the past. Aspartame has been studied a lot over the years and it's still used in a variety of products despite the availability of other artifical sweeteners. It must be somewhat safe.
