I wonder if it would be possible, on a world-wide basis, for several million people who could afford it, to voluntarily donate 5 or 10 U.S. dollars, euros, etc., to finance a new, and hopefully definitive, study on global warming.

The most difficult part of this will be finding qualified scientists who are currently completely neutral on the matter, and who side with neither the left or the right in the current debate about global warming. You'd also have to disqualify those scientists who are either hostile or friendly to particular countries. This might be a problem in that I think you'd have to disqualify most, if not all, of the scientists based in the U.S., India or China. And you wouldn't want any scientist from, say, Pakistan working on a study which might make the scientists in India distrustful of the results.

I'd just like to see this done, once and for all, by a group of scientists who have absolutely no political "axe" to grind in the service of either the left or the right. And that the financing will also have absolutely no connection to the left or the right. Now, I wonder, where exactly do you go to find scientists who are completely neutral on this matter, and who will practice only pure scientific method to answer this question, sans politics.

^^^ well, you can't go to most famous name universities - because the private university contributions and endowments almost exclusively originate with rich liberals.

you can't go to public universities or public scientific agencies either - because all are dependent on the good graces of a body of state / federal politicians for future funding levels.

you can't go to private industry, because all arguably have a profit motive at stake.

IMHO the only place such scientists can be found is in the annals of history i.e. Nikola Tesla or Philo Farnsworth being the two most recent examples I can actually think of.

Also, consider the fact that even if such a contribution based study to actually get organized and financed, for the scientists it would be a 'one shot deal'. Once the grant money ran out and/or the study was completed those same scientists would then need to obtain other positions ... positions for which their grant evaluation / hiring and firing will be contingent on the opinions / decisions of their potential future 'employer'. Thus even if such a contribution based study were to happen, scientists participating in the research would still have to be mindful of where their next grant or next job would be coming from, and how the results of this study might be perceived by those controlling the future grant money / hiring and firing that their ongoing careers depend on.
