Yes, the 335i is actually as fast or faster in a straight line than the 2001-2006 M3 coupe. However, the M3 is a much harder, much more tuned, and high strung machine than the 335i coupe is. The suspension is harder, the engine is more responsive, the steering is more direct...

If you test drive both, you'll feel the difference immediately.

You got off easy if it was just valves. The solution to this is a WOT switch. EVERY nitrous install should have one. This makes the nitrous only flow when the car is at wide open throttle. Allowing for more fuel to prevent a lean condition. Anyone that doesnt install one has no place installing a nitrous kit to begin with. What level squeeze were you running on that car?
I agree if they didnt install a WOT switch i would run far far away from them.

Its a big money pit so I stopped doing things to it lately but it started as an automatic but Ive converted it into a manual trans. Main things Ive done is

    Auto to manual conversion
    JWT tuned ecu
NX wet nitrous (currently not usable due to my JWT advanced timing program)
    Lightweight flywheel
Variable intake manifold from the middle east
Custom 13" big brake kit (300zx calipers and mustang cobra rotors)

I'll just give you a link to my cardomain much easier

Yeah an e46 m3 is my dreamcar, and will be my next car, no doubt. There really isn't a huge difference if you're jumping from a fully loaded 3 series to an m3. My stepdad got a new fully loaded 330ci with M package (suspension, rims, and a few others things, not sure)...but basically the price came up to about 48k out the door, which is about 10k cheaper than a new M. Basically, with the M, you're paying for the powerplant, and that's about it. Granted, there is nothing more fun than near 50/50 weight distribution with over 300 under the hood, if you're not a tracker or live in a heavily congested area, the 230 or so horses the regular 3's came with is nothing to scoff at. But also realize with M's, you're paying more, but you also get quite a bit better resale value due to the heritage and demand.

Here's my dd when I'm back home on the left coast...nothing yet under the hood, but hopefully soon-to-be Greddy TT'd when the funds permit.
