    Default Fred the Fish

My bf and I went to a carnival today, and I won a goldfish!!

We named him Fred the Fish and brought him home. We got him a cute little tank with a palm tree. We decided the safest place for him was on top the TV. We never saw the cats on the Tv before....

Then I'm sitting here on SW and I hear someone crying. My bf and I start looking around the house, trying to find which cat is crying. Occationally, Peanut likes to sleep in dresser drawers and she cant get out. So we thought that happened.

Then I see Butter, standing on her back legs like a gopher, crying and tryign to see Fred. She isnt big enough to see the top of the Tv tho, so she tried standing on her back legs to get a better view. Then she decided she needed to back up a bit to get a better view. So on her back legs, she started walking backwards!
Then she saw us watching and laughing at her, so she came over to wind around our legs and cry. " I want the fishy mommy. can I please, pretty please have a fishy?"
I fed her some Tuna...but she wants live fishy!

Im trying to get a video of her. Its to funny.

How could I resist that offer? Its a date. Wanna go tomorrow before work?
And Im not that good at winnin fishies. It took me 36 tries! 5 dollars for 12 balls. I had to buy in 3 times. But for you.....I'll try all night to win you a fish!

And Fred is still alive and kickin. He is a feisty one. he keeps having these seisure things, where he swims really fast from one end of the tank to the other doing these convulsions...I dont think he likes his tank

I didnt think a carnival fish would live for more than a day either. Im gonna have to go out and buy fish food now. Luckily...the cats lost interest in him, so for now..he's safe. I might buy him a girlfriend for company.

    He had a good life.

How long are goldfish supposed to live anyway? I had a huge goldfish named Goldie Hawn for several years. We had a freshwater tank with a filter in it and a pleiko to eat the algae and crap. I imagine that helped with longevity.

I dont knwo how long they are supposed to live.
We had Oscars when I was a teenager, and they ate feeder fish. One feeder fish, for some reason, the oscars did not want to eat. This feeder fish grew up to be a big goldfish, and lived in harmony with its predators. It lived for years, and it was just an overgrown feederfish.

Fred did have a good life. He also had a very nice funeral as he went back to the waters he came from.

Carnival / fairground fish usually die within a day or two because theyre not looked after properly and / or the transporting of them and transferring them from the bag to their new tank or bowl kills them. Most people do not know how to do this properly.
When I was a kid though in the early 1970s my cousin won 2 fish and they lived for years and years. We had them in a pond in our garden and they bred and we had so many after a few years. We moved in 1982/3 and I think the original 2 fish were still alive at that point.

I know to many people "theyre only fish" but I think using them as prizes is cruel considering.

Interesting read! Did you keep Fred in a bowl? Hence the premature demise.

No, we bought him a nice little tank, complete with an air pump and filter.
We did feed him 2 flakes every 4 hours ish, which was what the instructions on the can of food said to do. It was goldfish pellets.

And I agree...giving any live animal as a prize, even a goldfish, is not a very good thing to do, it is cruel. and I didn't expect him to live, being a carnival fish, he lived much longer than we thought.....

Oh well.....at least he had a nice life while it lasted.

    And..

Aww...poor Fred. In my experience, though, goldfish were never alive very long. Well, longer than a week, but not years or anything.

We had a betta fish that was alive for a few years...Bob the Betta. If we ever get another one guess what his name will be?

    Masta Betta!

Fish at carnivals are usually "feeder" goldfish. They are mass bred to be food for other fish like pirahna and other fish eating pets. If you ever go into a pet store and see one HUGE tank with a million goldfish half alive swimming in it...thats where Fred came from. They dont live long. If you get them to live more than a day..you've done an incredible job!

Sorry Fred died....those fish can be very fragile if things go wrong. I won one when I was 4 years old, and my dad put the bowl on the dryer. And then dried a load of clothes. Bye fishy In that case, he was a casualty of a careless man. I think it's nice you cared for him as you did
