    Default Ashtanga Yoga

Does anyone practice this type of yoga? Is there anything I should know before starting? What should I know about the yoga teachers qualifications?

I have alot going on in my life and hoping the strength and amount of focus I put into this it will finally give me peace of mind. There are only 2 places that are mostly dedicated to this type of yoga near me.

I practice it. I think it's the best type of yoga. I find Hatha yoga too easy. I've never tried Bikram yoga. The yoga teacher has to be certified and has to have completed at least the first Ashtanga series perfectly (know all the poses). Downward dogs are hard because you have to hold them. And they should have at least five minutes of meditation at the end.

So to move on to the next part of Ashtanga you have to know all the poses by heart?

Ok, my question is this: Which form of yoga should you start off in learning first?

I did Bikram for about 4 years, and just started the ashtanga a couple of months ago. I'm loving how calm and open it is making me feel.

Bikram was more physically challenging-- ninety minutes long, lots of balance and strength poses, and very detoxing because of the heavy sweating from the intense heat . But there was no real focus on the meditative aspect. Ashtanga is physically challenging in a different way--plus, with ashtanga, you get the nice, ripped yoga bod--especially in the upper arms--due to all the vinyasas between poses, which includes the downward-dog. You'll sweat in class, but it is a more gentle practice than Bikram. Also, many of the poses have several modifications , so that students of all levels can be in the same class and no one feels left behind.

You don't have to know the poses by heart---a good teacher will demonstrate to the class, as well as give very accurate verbal descriptions of what comes next. Plus, just glance at the students around you. After a few times, you get to know the names of the poses, and you also learn the sun salutations A and B pretty quickly. It really isn't intimidating at all. Even in the higher classes, the teacher is there to guide--you are never left to do your own thing unless it is an open practice session where people who have been practicing a long time can guide themselves through a series.

Any good yoga centre worth it's salt will have credible teachers. You'll know how good the teacher was based on how great you feel after class, in body and spirit. Yoga isn't a competiton--people are really there to do their own thing, and no one really watches or judges anyone else.

^^Paintbaby, what yoga class should one start in first? I've taken one yoga class at school before but that was years ago.

Really, you can start with whatever form of yoga speaks to you--the very first class I took was a Bikram class, because it sounded interesting. I loved it---the sweating, the physicality of it--I was hooked. But if you want to concentrate on a meditative aspect along with your practice, give Ashtanga a try. Ashtanga also gives a good workout, and sculpts the body nicely. I have to say that I love this form, too.

Really, it is about personal preferences----everything will be new at first, but a good teacher always makes a class enjoyable. Just pick a class and go!

Only if you are trying to become certified to teach it.

I love Ashtanga. I have the 2 best videos of Ashtanga Yoga for the days that I cannot make it to the classes.
