Default Keratosis Pilaris Bumpies - wtf?

So, for some reason I'm looking at my arms and going "Huh. These bumps which I have had FOREVER and a half are really sort of annoying looking". I've never had a problem with them before, and never cared about them until about a year ago. I go through phases (Take one thing wrong with me, and obsess about that one thing and one thing only for a week) when I get into a weird thinking mode and I realized "Maybe I have it elsewhere as well?" I've always wondered if that was it on my upper legs or my butt? It's a lot less noticeable but then again it could just be my hair folicles making it look dark - I don't know, I feel weird about pulling my pants down in front of my dermatologist who has only seen me for facial issues

I can't really remember when it started to occur since I never really cared since a lot of people have it.

I'm wondering if accutane would work? I've heard bad things about how the skin condition reacts to it though...people said it seemed to make it worse. I really need to go to my dermatologist seeing as I haven't been in awhile anyways. I hate the fact that it's genetic so there isn't much anyone can do about it except use certain products, etc.

From reading the two threads on here I've decided to start buying Aveeno oatmeal soap and stop using the soap I do now (seeing as I think it irritates my sensitive skin anyways). I'm also reading that sometimes tanning can make it less noticeable and since I rarely get a tan (even in summer...I stay out of the sun...and for that, I have VERY little skin damage if any) I'm wondering if it could actually be from LACK of sun.

Blah, anyways, I've never been tanning. Do they clean the beds? I've read places where rumors state that you can catch STDs (such as herpes) from a tanning bed. If I do go tanning...totally slipping some multi purpose clorox wipes into my bag I am such a germaphobe.

Eh, I really need to anyways considering my legs are as white as snow. If you only saw my legs in a picture - you'd totally think I was a white girl. It's kind of comical compared to other tanner parts of my body.

I haev the upper arm bumps too. I dont know how to get rid of them

every tanning bed i've ever been to..they wipe it down. i cant see how you could catch something..I guess you COULD, but the odds are slim to none. Even more slim if you do a stand up bed where you arent actually touching anything

I think this is the same condition my sister had on her upper arms. I used to have a slight case on the backs of my legs when I was younger. The pores and hair folicles get clogged up causing the bumps. Gently exfoliate the skin with your Aveeno wash. I use exfoliating wash gloves or a loofa. After showering, use a moisturizer. I also got over the area with a Clearasil face pad before I moisturize. The salycic acid helped clear the gunk out of the pores and folicles.

As far as tanning beds go, the must properly clean them after EVERY use. You shouldn't worry if you go to a reputable place. You can't catch STD's from tanning beds. I wouldn't recomend wiping the bed down with a clorox wipe as the cleaner may irritate your skin and possibly damage the surface of the bed as well. If need be, just ask the girls for a towel and the cleaning solution and re-clean the bed yourself.

my sis has this on her upper arms 2.Sorry but this is 1 of those things ur stuck with for the rest of ur life because theres is no cure. You can however out grow this condition. My sis outgrew the ones on her cheecks, but the bumps on her arms remained. If u want to minimise the appearance you can exfoliate with a loofah a cuople times a week, not everyday.Wash the area with a salicylic acid wash. Its really good for this codition. And keep the area moisturized at all times.Avon has this really good lotion called Moisture therapy skin bump minimizer.Try it, it's perfect for treating KP.Hope this helps

I have this on my upper arms, and I'm a bit self-conscious about it, however, I've not gone too out of my way to fix it. I will say this from my experience though....

*exfoliating for the purpose of trying to exfoliate the bumps off only makes them worse. however, gentle exfoliating in the shower has no effect. (i.e. they stay the same for the most part, but don't get inflamed). I use a gentle exfoliating gel with salicylic acid (by neutrogena)

*tanning did make mine mostly go away. I stopped tanning though, b/c it was causing me to develop all kinds of little beauty marks and I didn't feel that was very healthy for my skin (cancer-wise). They came right back after I stopped tanning.

*the less I pay attention to them and try to get rid of them, the less apparent they are to myself and others.

ha! i was just talking about mine earlier today!

yup, i got em too. upper arms and thighs. in the winter they are worse on becuase of clothing rubbing my skin. right now for some reason the front of my thighs are having issues more than normal. i usually get them on the back and side of my thighs.

wash gel with salicylic acid does help. i just try not to pay attention. the ones on my legs bother me the most though, but only in the summertime when i'm showing more skin.

It's so weird, I wake up and they feel softer, lol.
It just seems I have so many skin issues, but everyone has to deal with some crappy things.

^ I think the only place I have it is my upper arms.
Oddly enough, I notice my skin gets A LOT better with the more weight I lose. You'd be suprised with what skin conditions you get when you gain A LOT of weight. I'm hoping when I'm finished losing weight they will get at least a LITTLE better. I was reading it might be something to do with food allergies but it's highly debatable.

They look a lot like pimples, I used to think they were just bad arm pimples - that's how I always knew them as. About a year ago I went to a dermatologist and she goes "Oh, keratosis pilaris?". She was always more interested in my slight facial acne than the other things I was ACTUALLY concerned about. I figured damn near everyone has some slight acne and mine has never bothered me all the much anyways. Other than this, she is a good dermatologist - probably the best one I have been to.

Our first work of order though was the epidermal neevus (I was lucky though, it was small, I have seen some that are HUGE...it's basically an overgrowth of the epidermis) that I had removed < What kind of bad skin did I inherit?! Geez.

^^ I saw that last night. I am going to order it, because - eh, what I have got to lose because 30 some bucks.

I was also going to start tanning (I need to anyways), and see how that goes after a few weeks. I'll probably only tan for less than 10 minutes a week, maybe in two 5 minute sessions.

I didn't work for me, and it hasn't gotten rave reviews by anyone i've seen online.

^ Have you had anything that has worked for you? Even if I can't get the bumps gone, the redness on my upper arms being gone would be great.

Peter Thomas Roth makes a lotion with glycolic acid that is excellent for this. You can get it at Sephora or Ulta.

Hmm. Just found this thread...I have lots of tiny almost unnoticable bumps on the backs of my upper arms and the backs of my upper legs. They've always been there. Bleh.
