Default Question for Everyone Re: Sunblock

First, thank-you for reading. Here is my question: Is there a non-greasy, strong sunblock currently in existance which I could use daily on my scalp? It isn't necessary to read the rest, unless you're curious as to why I'm asking and don't mind my whining.

I have Lupus, both Systemic (which fortunately, is mild) and Subacute Lupus (which is a pain the arse). For those who don't know, Subacute Lupus is one of the skin forms, which results in skin lesions due to light sensitivity. I have had a few of what I refer to as "my Lupus spots" for several years. One even caused some Alopecia (nice little bald spot on my scalp).

My head and upper body are so fricken tender right now. I have Lupus spots in several locations on my scalp, one behind my ear, a few sensitive areas on my upper back, chest and arms (though not visible) , and one above my eyelid. The one above my eyelid has been there for over 4 years, and is so painful right now. I avoid the sun, keep my apartment dark, wear sunblock daily, and try to hurry in brightly lit stores. I also spend as little time as possible in our crazy bright dressing room at work. I use Cutivate cream (a topical corticosteroid), but only when neccessary as it is possible to build up immunity. I feel like I am doing just about everything I can, without living like a complete hermit or vampire. I'm clueless as to why it is acting up so much right now, but YES I am seeing a doctor tomorrow.

In the meantime if anyone has experience with this directly or indirectly, feel free to share, offer insight or advice etc.. Thanx a bunch!

Not exactly your case, but: I have a girlfriend who had lost her hair to chemotherapy and was also very photosensitive. She used to live like a vampire, but she never used sun screens. Instead, she used scarves Grace Kelly style and very broad hats.

I don't know, it sounds reasonable to me. If you have sunscreen on and brush against something, there goes your protection.

    I have these:

this is a gel, so it's not greasy at all.

for this one, I know a girl who's sister has an alergy to the sun, and she uses this:

I dunno if it's greasy though....

i use target brand baby sunblock, it's in a non aerosol spray bottle... i don't know if it would be too greasy for your hair though.

for all of your responses. You girls are awesome!

LolaRose, I didn't realize they made a gel sunblock! I'm definately trying that.
Miss_woot, I too have a nice collection of hats and scarves, and big gaudy sunglasses which I believe embarrass the crap out of my bf. hehe

As far as the lotion based sunlblocks etc., I have rather fine hair, but they'd work with a slicked back pony in the summer.

I'm really looking for something I can use on my scalp at work. (No ponytails allowed there btw) I've noticed my head starts "burning" after 10-15 minutes under the lights lately. Hopefully the gel will offer protection without making it look like I forgot to wash my hair.

I have a La Roche spray sunscreen, and it's not greasy on my face at all.. SO I imagine that it wouldn't be too greasy on your scalp.

I'm glad that you only have a mild form of Lupus, but I wish you didn't have it at all

Really, you should try to keep your head covered/out of the sun as much as possible. The sunblocks for hair/really don't work all that well. I always have a scarf/hat on my head in the sun, I have highlighted hair & it will turn white fast.I use, for my skin, Neutorgena Age Shield Sunblock. I dont know how it would be for hair/scalp. My mom has lily white skin, so I have purchased a cloth hat w/a small brim. It is a tightly woven, slightly thicker cotton, & made for gardeners. I got it @ Target last year for around $4.99 on clearance. Good luck!
