Thread: FUCK the IRS.

    Thumbs down FUCK the IRS.

I just found out I owe them over $1600. I made about $17,000 last year - keep in mind I live in L.A. - and claimed almost $5000 in deductions, so my taxable income was about $12,000 and they still taxed me on it?! FUCK those assholes, seriously. How many producers did I work for last year who are millionaires and didn't pay any taxes at all?

    *grumble*

I knew it would happen since I was working for cash most of the year, but still. I've gotten accustomed to getting back some of my money since I got divorced but now they want their pound of flesh. I wish I was an illegal alien.

Who else got reamed this year?

Yek, perhaps you are not taking full advantage of all deductions available to a self-employed person? Check out a few more options, you may be able to get that down.

Oh yeah, I'm getting reamed as well AND I wasn't even self-employed last year, lol!

Oh hon..you need a better accountant. Even working in cash my accountant always gets me something..usually a cpl grand. Every year I'm afraid I'll owe...but he makes it work somehow. He's been in the business for about 40 years..so he knows his shit!

Ask around...get referances for a better accountant.

    Right? Quarterly.

Seriously, are you taking a home office deduction? That just can't be right. Are those people who paid you cash reporting it, by the way?

And if you traveled to work at all there are many deductions for that from travel and lodging costs to a per diem for meals.

Standard deduction for an individual is $5,000. How can you have even less deductions? Have you calculated how you owe your FICA? Mileage deductions? Home office as Susan mentioned? Costumes? House fees?

Under $17k will probably qualify you for EIC, but I'm not sure.

Ok, this isn't financial advice, just a suggestion, YMMV.

You can still contribute to a traditional IRA for 2006 up until April 17. That will lower your taxable income. Play with the numbers to get the formula right. You can contribute up to the full amount, $4,000, in your income bracket.

Sure, you won't be able to access the money AND you will pay taxes on it eventually, but you can divert some of it now and pay yourself towards your financial independance.

    LOL

that would mean having a spare $4000 laying around...which is unlikely given the original complaint.

I think you're putting the cart before the horse.

    DAMN, Isolabella!! Yes, I do!

I meant that the deductions I claimed out of my own expenses added up to around $5000, plus the earned income credit and others. So my taxable income was even less... argh. The accountant walked me through it and it was Social Security and Medicare that killed me. I didn't owe much in income taxes and even got a refund on my California taxes, it was just the lack of SS and Medicare withholding that slapped me. I knew they would. I can make the money but it just ticks me off because I'm never gonna see a penny of those services. This is why I'm a conservative.

this reminds me of the simpsons episode when homer finds himself in front of the irs building and he starts booing.

maybe if you boo at the irs you'll owe less.

Liberals want them to pay more and you to pay less. End corporate welfare!

Well, without drifting into political poo, I agree that we should end corporate welfare. But it hasn't been my experience that liberals want me to pay less in taxes. It's Social Security and Medicare that killed me this year, and those are not conservative programs.

    Susan, i love you. truly.

and yekh, im always amazed by how much i owe. one year it was just over 10k. so you are not alone, although im jealous of your 1600 i owed that quarterly. im sure this year will be like 8-9k for me.
i did my medical deductions (decided that if i was poor i'd be dead) and those alone total to 8700. but even with that, im *sure* i will owe close to 10k. im finishing it all up tomorrow with my father. and im scared of that outcome.

    Love it!

OMG......SS and Medicare are meant for the eldery, the infirm, the retired! Its not lazy crack-whore welfare. The system is fucked, true, but no other advanced, industrialized country DOESN'T have such systems in place to take care of their citizens.

And "killed" by $1,800? Fact: taxes are the 3rd lowest they have been in the history of this country and they are going UP UP UP! No assigning blame, I don't want to be poo-ish either.

Just accept that taxes are part of life and you have to pay them if you want to be a citizen.

Those millionaire producers are still paying far more tax than you. As you've already mentioned, your income taxes are nill.

I'm sure I will just delete this too, but there are some pertinant points in here.

BTW, the most conservative people in the U.S. tend to be the upper end of the lower socioeconomic class. They are so close to abject poverty themselves that they try to seperate themselves from it as much as possible.

Who can actually live on Social Security? It's not enough to live on. However, if you took the same amount and invested it well, you probably COULD live on it. I'd rather have that money to invest as I see fit; it's MINE. Besides, the thing that really irritates me about Social Security is the fact that it's been coming out of my pay since I was 15 and everyone insists that it's for my own retirement. And ever since I was 15, I've known that was bullshit. I'll never see a penny of Social Security.

I think $1600.00 for your income sounds about right. That's actually not that bad. I don't understand how it could really be any lower or how you could get money back.

I wish people who praise SS would realize it was conceived back in a time when couples were having 5+ children and the average life expectancy was less than the minimum age that people could start drawing it.

Nowadays couples barely have two children and most people live well past 65. The fact is that you need a sufficient ratio of working people to retirees to keep the system solvent, and that ratio is getting smaller and smaller as the years go by and the Baby Boom generation starts retiring.
