^^^ Exactly, because at least the dishwashers are getting paid. The servers all have nights that end in zero money or less, and occasionally you get that table full of nasty bitches (it's nearly always housewives) who treat you like a slug in their garden and then don't tip, but the restaurant takes your assumed tip out of your pay anyway, so it COST YOU MONEY to be treated like that. The dishwasher might be getting minimum wage, but s/he can count on that pay, and listen to music or do whatever while working. The server is getting $2.13 or less and having to hustle, firt, and wiggle for her few bucks here, few bucks there. NEVER AGAIN, says I.

Ever since I became a stripper, I have so totally tipped above and beyond... I always wanted to be a model customer.. especially after hearing these stories and knowing what I know... it's sad. :/

I've been a server before and I hated it. I too would rather suck dicks at the bus stop than be a waitress again. I've been a hostess at IHOP too. That wasn't so bad except for the crappy pay. But serving absolutely sucked. Some people treat you so shitty and it's not like dancing where you can say "Fuck off" or walk away-you have to stand there and take it. And you could give some people absolutely perfect service and they will still give you a crappy tip or not tip at all. It definitely made me appreciate dancing a lot more.

Meh, I hated serving food. When I worked at a casino in Seattle as an on-call server I worked everywhere-in the night club, at the slot machines, the gaming tables and in the dreaded poker room. People would literally stay there ALL day and play poker, so naturally we served food from the retaurant. It was just amazing the difference between serving just drinks and serving food. People are so happy when you're getting them drunk, but when you're feeding them? Jeezus Christ-people were so verbally abusive I'm surprised I didn't need therapy afterwards...

i liked working in catering-style waitstaffing, because you're not supposed to interact with/befriend the customers/guests at all. the focus is on precision of your serving rituals, which was something that suited me.

i don't think waitressing could ever be worse than 'sucking dicks at the bus stop', and having just read a bunch of articles about teen prostitutes in seattle having to do that kind of thing, i'm kind of pissy that anyone would say something so vilely dismissive and privileged.

waitstaffing and food service more generally are variable-- some kinds are better than others in terms of money and work environs. the cooks were just normal people when i did catered events.

waitstaffing generally doesn't allow one to be lazy in the way that stripping often can, so in that sense, perhaps it is 'terrible'.

I actually kind of liked waitressing. Especially when I was graveyards at a truckstop. It was all coffee and conversation, kinda like a champagne room...

My first real job ever was peeling logs. I got 16 cents a foot. That sucked.

And hey, I loooove the Texas Roadhouse rolls.

Well, yeah, in my experience it really is that terrible. I've yet to break down in tears in a stripclub, did that regularly in restaurants.

I scooped ice cream at an amusement park for a season and a half during high school. I promised myself I would never work food service again. I would never have the patience to waitress.

One thing I noticed though, is that the waitresses at the Nordstrom's Cafe near my house are awesome. Like, super attentive and polite. Seems like it might be a decent job as far as serving goes.

Hey, before you completely give up on this idea--Are there catering companies in your town?

I've been working for one--as a server and cook--and I totally love it!

I worked every job in a restaurant except manager. They all sucked, though being the cook was the least unpleasant.

I actually could not wait on tables, though. Tried it a few weeks at the psuedo-upscale faculty club at the University, I was terrible. I will never forget this one old lady. I brought her soup, fresh from the tureen. It was hot. Next time I came to the table, she demanded a new bowl "This soup is cold!". I ignored her entirely, since it was not cold. Three times she asked, as I brought more food, etc. to the table (I wasn't very efficient, being a newbie waiter). Three times I ignored her increasingly strident demands.

Finally, after she got loud enough for him to hear her, the headwaiter brought her more soup. He asked me why I didn't do it. "Because the soup wasn't cold."

Tipping wasn't standard there, it was extremely rare, and they hired all these very young ghetto kids to work there--it was really strange (U of C was surrounded by ghetto). There were a lot of crabby people demanding a lot of things they didn't really need, I remember that. I really sucked at hiding my contempt for them--the minute someone starts copping an attitude with me, it's all over my face, lol. But they didn't fire me, I quit after a couple weeks.

Just being a waiter for that brief period of time convinced me I couldn't do it, in any restaurant.

Dishwashing sucks, too, depending on the restaurant it can be positively medieval. Worst of all was being a dishwasher/potwasher at a Greek restaurant one college summer in Daytona. I would leave work covered from head to toe in greasy food residue, under my clothes, everything. And they never stopped screaming at you, the entire time. "What you doing?! Washum deeshes! Washum deeshes!" I can hear it now, plain as day.

But yeah, everyone should do some sort of manual labor, waiting on people, whatever--just so they know how bad it can suck to be in the other guys' shoes they are bossing around. I have tipped really well wherever I go, ever since.

I'd take dishwasher in a second over waiting tables.

At least in the back you might be able to sneak a break and not have assholes saying that a cup of ranch dressing that you just took time out to get them wasn't e-fucking-nough.

You will miss out on pissing and shitting because invariably someone wants ranch, or another napkin, or water, or their bill just as you are about to sneak a piss.

You will give up pissing because once one customer asks for their bill, even if it takes them twenty minutes to pay it, you will not want to leave the area or they may skip the check or some ass will take the tip.

Dishwasher, dishes, dishes - having done both - at least the dishes don't abuse you for ranch. Servers you know what I mean about the ranch people.

Joke is you will get paid the same if not more than the servers in the end. And you don't have to suck dick to get it. People tip less for food than liquor.

I agree with others on the banquet serving. Everyone is in a good mood and it's just easier work. I do it for my in-law's business and am planing to take some weekend shifts at local catering halls as server and/or bartender.

Try that first. They call you when they need you. Good way to test it out.

I waited tables for eight years and while it's not a gurantee, you can make good money if you work in a classy restaurant with reputable clientele. The last restaurant I worked in it was easy to make $1,000 a week, but their was huge factors involved.

    1. They only hired experienced fine dining servers.
    2. The best sections were relegated to senior staff, and may depend if the host staff like you.
    3. Did I mention that I busted my ass? The real payoff was the weight I lost from running miles and miles during my shift during the lunch and dinner ruch.
    4. And you have to be efficient in fine dining. I made the mistake of acting very smilie and friendly when I first made the switch to fine dining. One of the head servers told me to lay off the IHOP charm a lil and focus on efficiency. That increased my tips dramatically! The customers could care less how funny I was, as long as I was pleasant, efficient, and fast they appreciated that way more.

Their are a couple of restaurants in the DC area that have a waiting list for an interview! The people that work their are career servers. They are in it for the long haul and get PAID! One of my old colleagues made the switch to a very exclusive restaurant and he makes at least $1400 a week. I'm not exagerrating, keep in mind that the people that eat at these places will have a bill that is at least $600 for a full course meal with drinks, and pricey after dinner drinks. These patrons usually go out to eat for the experience, not because they're hungry.

I wouldn't mind waiting tables for this type of establishment again, but the management is SUPER demanding, and super sensitive. If you want to make bank waiting tables, I mean real bank, you will have to get superior experience( or train really well in this area and lie about your past experience) and hunt for a expensive restaurant. Go online and price the appetizers, entrees, salads, and drinks. If you can get all four under $30.00 then this isn't the type of place I'm talking about. If you can get all for for $300.00 apply immedietly. Again, it's not a sure bet, you will STILL encounter whiny snobby people, but your chances to make alot more money are slightly increased.

In general, I found it to be shitty and degrading. Which is why I refuse to do that work anymore.

But it does depend. If you can find a cool place with amazing staff that's not too hectic, it can be fun. My friend works in a artsy cafe/restaurant and it's really laid back and very "Cheers" She loves it.

Every time I go near a Red Lobster I see morbidly obese people everywhere! I have worked at IHOP and other restaurants. I would not wait tables again. I'm seriously too shy for that. I can strip my clothes off for men who by and large are super complimentary, but I can't deal with bitches and assholes for a few bucks. Hell no. That said, I worked for over 7 months catering at a historic restaurant in Austin, Texas and loved that work. I didn't have to take orders, just serve or set up a buffet. The only annoying part of the job was when we'd do frat parties with an open bar. Without fail some drunken frat slut would fall down the stairs.

Oh gods...I used to work for Red Lobster..never have I had a worse job...those people are evil! They measure seams on your shirt to make sure its not a quarter of an inch off, everything is timed to the second, ect. (30 seconds to greet the customer, 2 minutes to get salads out) Oooh, I waitressed several places, but this was the worst. Customers get evil about those biscuits too! 'Hi how are you tonight?' "Wheres my biscuits?!" *resist temptation to choke customer with said buscuit* Yeah...I dont wait tables anymore...

Wow! ^That stuff is amazing. Thanks for all that info.
Anyway, one of my few serving jobs was @ a seafood place in a hotel. One of the waitresses was an unofficial HBIC (from I luv NY head b*** in charge) she got ALL or at least most of the best tables, & ran roughshod over all the other servers (including the men). We had to tip out the busboy 10%. Ok fine, but he rarely bussed any tables but the HBIC's. We rarely got cash tips since most ppl charged it to their room. We got charged 8% tax on the tips + the other taxes, so for me it was barely worth it & I quit after less than 1 mo.

The place I wanna work at probably won't be at $300 for a full course, but probably around $100/person. I'd really like to try my luck down there..I'm just so nervouse..
