    Default tanning with minimal damage?

I know, regular tanning is bad for you, will prematurely age the skin and could be dangerous...especially for me, as I'm fair-skinned with a fuckton of moles that I need to keep an eye on and watch for changes.

I don't tan regularly, but once every 2 or 3 months I get the urge to brighten up my skin a bit. It's strictly for work--I actually like my pale skin, but ITC with the lights and all, I do look washed out. When I stop dancing for good (4-5 years from now) I know I'll also be swearing off tanning beds for good.

In the meantime, any advice on how to minimize damage from tanning? I already get no more than a light tan when I go (I still look fair-skinned, just with a hint of color), and I cover my face when I tan (I read that the face is usually a shade darker than the rest of the body, and that seems about right IMHO--everything looks the same when I get done with my face-covered tanning. ) So aside from going light and shielding my face, is there anything else you'd recommend?

Use a good lotion to keep you moisturized during and after tanning.

Yeah tanning is bad for you, but so is sugar, salt, drinks, ect... I'm no sun worshipper but sue me, I do enjoy basking on a beach occassionally and the resultant killer tan, so when I do sunbathe I marinate myself in Ocean Potion Anti-Aging sunblocks- full of vitamins and Parsol, they even have one for your face with retinol in it now. And they smell like creamcicles ;] And don't forget the after-sun!

    i'll say it once.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SAFE OR NONDAMAGING TAN.

you're better off using tan in a can.

Cover your face and neck with a black shirt as well as the towel they give you. I also put on SPF 30 on those areas and in my cleavage area before I tan. Those are the parts that look the worst when wrinkly so it pays to protect them.

I've got a pretty nice tan going right now, but my face is pale as a ghost. That's what bronzer was made for, baby!

Man I sooo wish I could rationalize out a tanning salon membership... but both of my grandpas got skin cancer and I have a crapload of odd moles and freclkes spattered on my back, so I just can't. I would recommend to you just maybe laying out for small amounts of time with sunblock on (the beds are so strong), and then layering with bronzer and self tan.

What about the stuff that makes you tan faster? Does that mean you get more tan with less exposure, therefore less damage?

^^ That's Melanotan, and yes, that's almost exactly what it's designed for.

Since you are lighter, you're at more of a risk. Apparently 3 bad sunburns in your life can send you higher on the skin cancer risk scale, and skin cancer is a big deal.

I still can't believe my mom tans in the summer since her father died of melanoma....I think the worst skin cancer you can possibly get.

Me on the other hand, being dark and of some African decent I don't worry so much about sun damage, and an aethtrican (Know I spelled that wrong) said I had little to none even though I used to spend TONS of time outside during the summer getting super dark. I still use sunscreen though...

It's like...a built in sunscreen. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't wear sunscreen you can still get those sun dots and sun freckles. And hell, skin cancer...less of chance, but not entirely impossible.

use a product with caffeine in it. Apparently, research is suggesting that caffeine applied topically to the skin is beneficial in terms of preventing or reversing damage. I myself like It smells sooooo frigging delicious and turns me a beautiful shade of brown but is greasy as hell and mineral oil based so not good to use in the laydown bed (I have used with the stand up bed tho).

I heard it's better to tan right after a workout bc it'll last longer. Not sure how true this is. Try it.

    Thanks guys.

Mystic tan is out, sadly...it's a brilliant idea, but it turns me orange. I look like I've got jaundice. ugh. Same for every other brand of self-tanner I've ever used.

I would ideally prefer to just lay out in natural sun for a bit...the problem is finding a place where I can lay outside in a thong and no top! LOL. Not in my seedy-neighborhood backyard, that's for sure.

Good idea with the Melanotan; I will try that. I've never fancied going dark; I just like to have a little bit of color once in awhile.

Ocean Potion makes sunblock mostly, but also enhancing after-sun lotion, cooling/numbing sunburn creams, and self-tanner. I like it all except for their sunless tanner, which is too orangey for me.

Anyway, ever read 'Black Like Me'? It's a book about a white guy who darkened his skin with oral and topical treatments to experience life as a black man. I forget what the oral treatment was that he took, maybe that's the melatonin someone else mentioned, but anyway you should maybe look into that instead or in conjuction with regular tanning.

You could always go get a real airbrush tan. Teh person who does it knows how to mix the solutions to get your color just right. If you tell her you want just a light tan, she can do that. That is usually how I get a tan, it cost $40 bucks, and its well worth the money. You strip naked, and she sprays every inch of your body. You'll alwasy be even and perfect, if she did it right, and the color alwyas looks good. It also fades and looks much more natural and way better than Mystic, which is garbage, in my opinion.

Getting a real tan, and being exposed to thoes rays, espicially being fair with moles is a big no no. Believe me, Im very very fair, blonde, and have gotten a few very bad burns in my life. When I loved to vega si had no idea the sun was that strong! i layed out for only 10 minutes and had the worst burn in my life!
Next week I go to the derm. to get all my moles checked out. I have several that have been bleeding/suspicious looking for awhile. A tan isnt worth skin cancer.

Then again...who am I to talk? Smoking isnt worth lung cancer, but I do it anyway.

Get a mystic tan () or a fantasy tan. Most tanning salons offer it (it costs about $20 per session) and many customers claim it looks completely natural. It isn't the same thing as airbrush tanning because there's no makeup involved - instead there's a bronzer and a non-toxic chemical called DHA that naturally darkens your skin by reacting with proteins in the skin's superficial layer to form a golden brown tan. Be patient with the results, though, because it usually takes several sessions to achieve your peak tan. You can maintain your tan with a tanning session every five days or so.
I've never tried it myself, but I've heard great things about it and plan to try it soon because I don't want to further harm my already delicate skin.

I was about to post that the "Black Like Me" author died of skin cancer as a result of his extreme tanning experience. Fortunately, I took the time to Google this first. Nope! Urban legend. While the treatments were risky--he was under a Dr.'s care during them--he was felled by a series of heart attacks, not skin cancer.

(P.S. I am giving myself 8 minutes in a bed today to celebrate being a good gym rat and having lost another couple lbs. Besides, as I've posted previously, a short zap invariably boosts my mood and my libido--although the latter is, in my case, like being all dressed up with no place to go.)

    Very interesting read:

    Airbrush tanning involves makeup?
Never had any makeup with an airbrush tan. Its just Bronzer and the DHA.
Ive tried Mystic, it isn't that great, espicially after you've had an airbrush tan, done by a professional. Its much better. And being airbrushed, they can contour, to make your boobs look bigger, yoru thighs and tummy smaller and more toned.
