Default It's only 7 hours old, and already I hate it!!!

    Grr!! Windows Vista. SUCKS!!!!!
    !!!!!!!

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got this nifty new laptop, and it's cool and all, but unfortunately it has Vista installed. The damn thing doesn't recognize my USB drive. At all. Nada.

The USB works fine on my PC and on my crappy ollllllllddd laptop, but not this one I have read on some geek forums that the device manufacturer does not have a driver for Vista, and won't until sometime later this year. bleh

And I just spent hours the other night getting the USB all configured with my portable apps and crucial biz files so I can work from anywhere, but now it won't work with my new laptop, and I'm planning to get rid of the PC and old laptop so I NEED the USB to work with the new laptop.

    Dammit!!

If I have Windows XP (legit version) from my PC and I can find the install disk, is it possible to install XP on the laptop, or are there licensing issues with installing it on a different computer? So far installing XP on the laptop is the only way I can think of to solve this problem, but if I can't install it on another computer, I might be screwed....

    Anyone got any ideas?

Buy a new USB drive? Wow, I wouldn't even have thought about the issues with peripherals/accessories. That's a huge pain in the ass.

Certainly you can run XP on the new laptop, though -- that shouldn't be an issue.

Au contraire.... I'll bet it's an XP disk that came with a new PC, for re-install/restore use only. Those things are rigged to only work with certain hardware, so it will likely not work on a diff machine. If, on the other hand, you bought XP by itself off the shelf it would work fine. PM me if you hit a snag

Meh. My XP came with a new PC, of course. I figured there would be some issue installing it on another comp. And of course I have no other legit versions of windows.

Ok so I got it to work. Installed some windows updates, uninstalled the manufacturer's pre-installed software from the USB, and now it works like a charm. All MY docs and apps now work just fine from the USB on the new comp. I'm posting right now from portable firefox running off the USB on the new lappy. Even the autorun portable startmenu loads up. YAY!!

So I can't use the weird startmenu that came with the USB, as if I care. My startmenu is better and it runs all my nifty new portable apps (something the other didn't do). And all is right with the world again

Although I'm still a bit concerned about Vista. It seems to take much longer to boot and shut down than my XP, and some posts on some of the geek forums say it freezes alot at random times and often during video play....

After an initial hate period, I've started to get used to Vista. Mine boots pretty quickly. There is a problem with Windows Media Player 11 - it won't f'ing play a LOT of .avi files. All the necessary codecs are installed. I researched this quite a bit to find that there's no fix except to use another player. Winamp works just fine, but boo on Microsoft for putting this crap out. WMP11 works just fine on my XP box, but ain't worth a damn on the Vista notebook.

Wait'll you need to run a command-line program, like ipconfig. You have to go to the shortcut for the command prompt, right click it and run as administrator. You can't just go to start - run and invoke cmd or ipconfig.

....good job B. For future reference, XP Corp or Student will install on any PC with the install serial number. XP Home and Pro's install number(the one from microsoft) is dependent on the exact hardware you are installing it on. It's some fancy algorithm of mac addresses/serials of harddrives, memory, video card, motherboard, etc... That special number allows you to replace minor things like a drive or memory but not a different motherboard without needing a new install number. This helps prevent multiple installs on different machines with the same install number.

I've not had very many issues with Vista:

If you're looking for a way to run it without the annoying "elevation" and "warning"s I can show you how to do that in the group policy settings.

Also, little known fact, you can run old drivers very easily in XP SP2 Compatibility mode

I as for freezing video playback and some such, be very careful, 90% of the time it's the codecs that you may have inadvertently installed. EXAMPLE: XP never same with an mpeg2 decoder (needed to play DVDs) so people would install powerdvd or windvd and somesuch to enable playback in media player. This is NOT needed in Vista, and a LOT of functionality is hurt if you install pre-Vista MPEG2 decoders.

Same goes for DivX and Xvid.

I can make my supplemental files available if you need them (I.E. codecs and tested apps)

Do NOT, run nero 6 or earlier...it may think it's working, but you'll bleed right out the anus when you need to do something requiring direct access. ASPI layer is not the same as it used to be. Incidentally, Nero 7.7.5.1 is the only nero working in it and it's the best for it despite the crazy shit you have to do in install.

ALSO a big LOOKOUT would be if you have mediacenter edition. Kiss your organized files goodbye if you run it without paying attention, it'll organize them for you and it's no where near as friendly as iTunes' folder layout. IMHO. (It's actually BETTER in theory, as is the picture gallery, but it takes some serious crack rock to reason with)

Anyways, if you're looking to make it operate as vista, but in your way less lemme know. I'll help.

I_LUV_Dancers: you can disable that in group policies very easily by disabling the elevation policy. Trust me, in my world, it's nice for the new cpu user who doesn't have square one knowledge about what he's doing but is the owner of the pc.

This actually isn't true. They didn't ban it, if I remember correctly it was more the price tag associated with it, and the fact that 45% of government based apps or higher (purely guest-a-mated) run in a dos mode that is better emulated in XP than in Vista.

If you remember correctly, the government also took a financial shit all over us when SP2 came out for vista with that friendly new firewall that defaulted to On that Microsoft told exactly NO ONE about outside the end user doc. Microsoft brought corporate america to it's KNEES with that one and on TOP of ALL that, they still think it's wise, in a corporate environment to not have your admins test Windows Updates and have all workstations install them manually.

Licensing validation will be changing for XP soon enough. The genuine validation tool is now automating the generated codes it validates your code with looking for duplicates and may disabling your system at random if it shows a copied code.

My suggestion is to use your desktop disk, use the sticker code, and then when it tells you to validate and fails, call the number, read it to them and when they ask you how many computers you have the OS installed on, say 1. And they'll just issue you a new code validating both PCs legally (in M$'s eyes)

The people at the end of the 800 number in tphone validation are indian and can BARELY if at ALL speak english beyond what you say to them in response to what they've been trained to ask.

The call literally takes like 6 minutes.

I've been looking for a XP cd, and apparently I don't have one. I have 3 recovery disks which I've never even opened, but no specific XP disk, and I've got the package with all the books and other disks that originally came with the PC. The recovery disks say WinXP on them, but they're not XP disks. I could've sworn I had an XP disk but it's not in my stuff and I can't remember for sure now.

Should there be an XP disk??

Typically that means that the cd you have is hard coded for a set of serial numbers that those recovery disks can operate on. You're Shit outta luck hun. But I can help.

not really, not in this department.

You lose that mac cd, and you are UP shit creek without a paddle. And it KNOWS when to ask for it. The MOMENT after you lost it.

Luckily some of us know OSX's back end and the cvs server all the files are stored on for quicklike recovery.

Agreed on the lengthy installation, but it's pretty straightforward and the program itself is hugely capable.

Wait'll you need to run a command-line program, like ipconfig. You have to go to the shortcut for the command prompt, right click it and run as administrator. You can't just go to start - run and invoke cmd or ipconfig.
Um, for 90% of the user base, this is a good thing; prevents users from inadvertently running scripts they shouldn't.

i read an article on how most of the US government have banned the use of Vista in their offices because its so crap!
Considering the NSA was consulted by Microsoft on security for Vista (as well as Apple for OS X), I would hardly say the government thinks it crap. Just because the USG has a ridiculous array of software packages that can never be ported forward to a non-DOS/COBOL-based OS doesn't mean they think Vista is crap; they just can't implement it with making huge, expensive changes. This isn't that new compared to the migration of governments and companies with the switch from main/miniframes to client/server networks.

For those interested (and willing to read lots of technical details), Windows Vista perhaps has more to do with "premium content" protection than "security" protection. Here's a link to an in-depth analysis which has received quite a bit of news coverage: http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut00...ista_cost.html

After 25 years of using first Apple IIs and later Macs, I finally had to buy a PC last month. I was hired to work at home by this company, using their proprietary software, which would only run on a PC. They specifically said not to use Vista. So, I bought a Compaq Presario that had XP installed. This made me happy because although I never owned a PC before, I had used them at the school where I taught and was pretty familiar with XP. It took me a day to get it to recognize my wifi network, but other than that it has run pretty well.

Now, if I could only get the battery to charge, I'd be a happy man.

Bridgette, if you've only had it a little while and have not yet installed any of your own software, maybe you could take it back and exchange it for a computer that has XP instead. XP is really a pretty good OS.

That guy is utterly clueless; for those that would rather not read the deranged ramblings of a dude with an ax to grind against any content producer (he screams about Hollywood much more so than M$), check out a more reasoned look at how "horrible" Vista is for DRM.

If I had a nickel for everyone who thought they knew something about Vista's DRM...

I figured as much. My MCSE, Network, PC support etc guy bought the book on Vista today. I get it next. Between us we'll figure out how we'll need to configure Vista for our network.

My problem with .avi files started from the get-go. Absolutely would not run any of them and popped an error msg. every time. Installed codecs, divx, xvid - same/same - nada. Winamp works like a champ. Lotta bitching going on about Vista/WMP11 not playing AVIs.

Still getting used to it, but liking it better - incrementally.
