    Smiley Thinking about a vacation.

Alright. I've never taken a vacation completely alone, without any company. I always wanted to do it, but don't know where. The rush of just packing your shit and go and not giving a fuck.

I'm also thinking of safety, i'm a pretty petite gal... gotta be a safe place.

If any of you would take a trip vacation ALONE, where would it be?

    Give me ideas please.

I cruise alone all the time.

You can go on a singles cruise (singlescruise.com is pretty good) or go out on your own. I like cruising because you can socialize when you want, take organized tours with people you trust and someone is there to make sure you're back in your room every night. if you go with an organized singles group, you can make friends (and "friends") pretty easily.

I'm cruising all through southern Asia next month alone (not a singles cruise, just a cruise by myself) on Crystal Crusies. I love Crystal because they are set up pretty well for singles. There is only a 125% single surcharge to have the room to yourself (some crusies charge you 200%, like Royal Caribbean or Celebrity.) Plus they have gentleman hosts, which are guys hired by the ship to entertain the single women. i find it hilarious because they are the male versions of geishas, but these luxury crusies attract a lot of wealthy widows. And Carnival is an okay choice for a single on a budget. They have singles nights and stuff (but beware, they are mostly teenagers cruising with their parents....which is why I think singles crusies are great.)

    Oh, Emily that sounds interesting!

I went to the Carnival once with a friend, we hated it! Too many old ppl, family(kids).

I hate Carnival. I REALLY hate Carnival for reasons that are too long to get into now, but they are cheap and if you go with a singles group, it can be less annoying because you're so focused on partying. They really are a "fun ship." If go during a time of year that kids are in school, there won't be as many.

I thought I hated traveling with old people too, but I realized that I liked well-traveled, interesting old people. Luxury lines seem to attract those. I had some great dinner conversations with these people.

I love a solo roadtrip. When my ex-husband left Australia, I threw some stuff in the car and spent three weeks just driving around the country by myself. I went all through the outback, went to Melbourne, took the ferry to Tasmania and spent a week hiking and exploring Tasmania, drove back... met so many interesting people and saw a side of the world that hardly anyone gets to see. It's amazing to me that Melbourne and those little outback villages are even in the same country, much less within a couple days' drive of each other.

You could do that in the USA, too. Just get in the car and go wherever the urge takes you. Stay off the freeways, though, just take the highways and explore!

Yek, i'm horrible with directions so that wouldn't be good for me. LOL. I need mapquest & a navigation system to get to a city within my state..how pathetic is that. hahahaha. BUT, that's an awesome idea too. I'd do that with friends.

Jamaica isn't that safe if you're with someone. there are much better choices in the caribbean.

jamaica is only safe if you go to an all enclusive resort and don't leave the premises. i'd go to europe, germany, holland, england, paris.

If I were to take a vacation alone right now and I were on the East Coast I believe I'd go to the Bahamas. Seems safe enough and close enough that you don't have the huge travel time you'd have if you went to Kauai, which is where I'd go from the West Coast.

    I like the beach.

Oh, or you could go to London! That's close (what, 6 hr flight from NYC?) and lots and lots of fun. Also there's SW gals there who could point you in the right direction.

as long as you are somewhat sociable, you won't get bored! People want to talk to the single girl (and not all in a pervy way.)

I have travelled alone a bunch. i just went to florida alone- stayed with my grandmother so i wasn't completely alone, but i have definitely done vermont, nyc, cali and paris alone. a lot of places in europe would be great for single travel. i loved Copenhagen, Prague. in Prague, although i was not alone, i found lots of nightlife and made friends with some irishmen celebrating a bachelor party. they danced a jig for me. it was fun.
cruising is a good idea too.

    Love it!

I've been aching for a solo vacay too, or just going with a girlfriend.... I'm thinking of doing NYC solo, but I've got family there.... maybe I just won't tell them I'm going! Or doing a mini roadtrip. But I'd need someone with for that......

I'm kind of the same way too. I don't really talk to people except at dinner. And when I said people want to talk to you, I mean women and couples too. I don't really talk to guys by themselves. My last solo cruise, I met Paula Deen (from FoodTV) and her husband. They were so cool and we had a lot of fun hanging out around Istanbul and in the ship casino. I've met pysicists, sports agents, real estate tycoons, old ladies who have traveled all over the world and will tell some awesome stories. it can be great!

But then I don't really rely on other people for entertainment. I eat breakfast and lunch alone. I read, sightsee, shop, sunbathe alone during the day. And I gamble all night. Or watch movies in my room. Whatever I want.

it's really not boring to be by yourself unless you're a boring person. I think it's better because you don't have to hang out with the same person the whole time. THAT gets boring!

Cruising is on my to do list. I love going out by myself. Movies, roadtrips, shopping, whatever. I can change plans and doing anything spur of the moment without compromise. I traveled all around the western US last summer just to do it by myself. Thats when i fell in love with the Grand Canyon. Oh yeah and Hogi Yogi. Good I wish there was one here.

Yep, it's just their customs to have later hours, so more people are out late in the major cities, not like the states.

It was weird seeing women taking the subway by themselves after midnight.
