    Default ARGH!!!!! Shin Splints!!!

I don't even know wtf shin splints are, but I think I've got them! Tonight at work my right shin started aching, and by my last stage show I was actually limping and my whole leg was siezing up and my eyes were watering from the pain. I really struggled to drive home and now I'm in so much agony that I can't sleep, all the muscles around my shin are cramping so bad it feels like my leg is going to explode! Our manager is a trained massuse (that's totally not spelled right but it's 4.30am, so forgive me) and he said he definitely thinks it's shin splints.

I dunno how the hell I got them. Does anyone have any remedies or suggestions of something I can do to alleviate the pain? Oh my fucking god it huuuuurts

When I had shin splints I was just told to take Ibuprophen or Naproxen and to take it easy for a couple of days (this was from running). Although there isn't much to be done for the initial pain but rest, you can strengthen the muscles by standing on the edge of something (stairs are good) and raising yourself up and down on your toes. That might be called a calf press maybe, I don't know. But doing those regularly will help prevent them from coming back.

My doctor told me I had them, once upon a time. It was because I was still growing. I thought you could only get them durring then (while growing). But I could be wrong.

The pain sounds the same, thought!

feel better, and go to the doctor.

OMG! THe best thing for you to do is to rest. Or you will not heal! Please rest the is the best thing to do when it comes to shin splits. Shin splits are very painful so hopefully you will get better or thats not your promblem!

You need to start stretching the front of your calf. I know it sounds odd, but you do have muscles that run across the front of your calf...and since we wear heels (over 1") almost 90% of the time, we are a common target for shin splints because we point not flex the foot.

I actually took this in my anatomy class....there are two muscles on the front of the calf (Peroneus Longus, Tibialis Anterior) that need to be stretched in order to better protect the bone. You have heard the phrase, "move it or lose it", well that applies here.

When you are sitting, flex your foot...all the way up...rotate your toe in and then out. This is not a fix...bit it helps to relieve some of the pressure and reduce the chances of further damage.

I sometimes get these in the middle of the night. I stretch my leg until it feels like it's about to pop. The pain is horrible, but then it goes away.

I used to get horrible, crippling shin splints when I was wrestling/ running too much. Alena's right- you have to stretch the front of the calf. What my coach used to get me to do was sit on my freezer (or anything high) and put paint cans on my foot, and then lift them up (the flexing motion).

Nowadays, I find switching up my cardio and doing yoga helps the most (yoga will stretch and tone everything...it's really my favourite excercise these days...doesn't feel like much, but when I was really into last year regulars at work started to comment on how much more toned I looked).

Really, over-running will give almost anyone shin splints. Make sure you have really good shoes (check if you pronate, etc...asking a 'shoe expert' at a sports store would help), and don't push it too much too quickly. Alternate one day running, one day cycling, or whatever. I don't know if you are running a lot, but it's a common injury for runners. And they suck balls, those shin splints. I know how much they hurt! In the mean time, naproxen and tylenol will help.
