Default I'm eligable for the Texas Women's Health Program!

When I went to Planned Parenthood in February for my annual pap smear, I was informed that I was eligable to apply for the Texas Women's Health Program. It provides free annual pap smears, birth control, and other services. I'm a poor college student with no income and just succumbed to taking out a loan (I refuse to strip in Houston), so I applied hoping that I could minimize hits to my wallet.

Well, I finally got the letter today! I can't wait till they send me the Medicaid card so I can go to the Planned Parenthood clinic and get reimbursed for the $189 I coughed up for my pap smear and STD tests. I'm hoping that they'll also reimburse the visit in which a dirty Brazilian wax with a stupid bitch who didn't wear gloves gave me a rash and a yeast infection. I went because I though it was a bacterial infection, and paid $76. I hope that the Nuvaring is covered.

If you live in Texas and meet the criteria (under a certain level of income, basic paperwork, proof of income), then you can apply for free women's health! Go for it! Here's the site with the forms and info.

Being poor does have its perks!

Well...I've NEVER heard of that. I wonder if that's done on purpose?

It's fairly well advertised on the Planned Parenthood of Houston website. It's also new, as it started on Jan 1, 2007.

All benefits are like that. Yo uhave to do some research and dig a bit to find them.

Ah...it's new. Ok, that's why. I knew about all the other stuff (you know, CHIP and junk), but I'd never heard of that one.

Do you know of any other programs that might be of use to any of us? Someone just told me that I might be eligable for food stamps. I'm in nursing school and won't be working till this summer, I was screwed out of the Pell Grant by the FAFSA, and I'm supporting myself, so I'm not above it.

Hmm...lemme look for a minute. I had looked at all of it before I found our income was right above the limit.

This gives a general overview, but there are more specific things related to food stamps and the like. The food stamp limits are kind of crazy, though. After I lost my job and we were living on only Mox's income we STILL didn't qualify.

Let me look a bit more, though.

Not only do I not have an income, I have NEGATIVE income since I took out a student loan. I'm hoping that will help me qualify for this stuff. Grrr graduation cannot come soon enough! I am busting my ass to become a nurse!

This will tell you more about the food stamp stuff.

Pay special attention to the part that talks about the difference in having kids and not having kids. If you don't have kids you have to work at least 20 hours/week to get them long-term. If you don't work you can only get help for 3 months.

last time i was on this program, they didn't ask for any paperwork, just asked you if you had a job and earned money and if you said no, you went on the program.

it was rather severely gutted by bush to where a lot of expensive stuff is no longer free, but it's still a good option for basic care if one is overall healthy.

the program i was with was federal, so hopefully i am not confusing this one with a different free healthcare program. but this was in 2005, and it was a godsend when i had abnormal paps and needed further procedures that were pretty expensive out of pocket at the time, but free with that program.

Missouri's Planned parenthood has a similar program. I was on it for a while before my mother freaked out about me going to downtown St Louis to get my stuff done and get my BC, she pays for it now.

I, also, being a poor college student, was considered a "Title 1" patient. I basically meant that I got all my services for free as long as I got everything done there.

Hey I went to Planned Parenthood on Monday for my first yearly pap in like 3 years (yeah, that's bad, I know), and to get on the depo shot.. and apparently I qualified as well!! When I called for my appointment, the guy was like, make sure to bring in your birth certificate .. I was like, um, okay.. But now I get it! YAY for healthcare!!

Yay for free birth control! I get mine through California's program... every three months, I show up at my local pharmacy and pick up three more pill packs. And every summer I get a free PAP smear, STD screening, breast exam, and a fresh prescription for the year. It's glorious, such a big help!!

Hey, let's make a sticky listing the free women's health programs by state!
