    Default cardio

Ok..I do a LOT of weight training. I have great muscle tone...under a layer of fat. I cant find a cardio that works. I have asthma nad every cardio that is intense enough to actually do anything kills me. I take the bike out....I get about 3 minutes of riding before my lungs feel like they are going to expode. Same with running, etc... I walk, but that isnt really intense enough at this stage to show me results. I pole dance and hit hte heavy bag...but again..6-9 minutes(3 songs) and I can barely breath.

I'm getting really frustrated. I'm working out like crazy and I still haev about 20 pounds of fat that wont budge.(I miss ephedra..I never had this problem when I took it)

Before I resort to lipo(again) does anyone have any ideas?

(my search function isnt working too well..so I tried to find this, if its been covered recently ...sorry)
People always ask me, did I ever learn anything when I was a stripper? Yeah, I did. One man plus two beers equals 20 dollars.

What is your asthma regimen like? If you are having this much trouble maybe your doctor needs to revise it. If I may suggest, if you are already not doing so:

a steroid inhaler twice a day every day ( something like flovent )

About an hour before you work out, take a couple of puffs off a rescue inhaler like albuterol or xopenex.

I have asthma and when I was in shape, I worked up to running for an hour and I HATE running. I started off walking 4 minutes and running for 1 minute and would repeat for 30-60 minutes. When this got easy, I gradually increased my running times and decreased my walking times. It took months, but I finally got there. This soft of interval training should work for any cardio that you prefer.

My asthma actually isnt bad at all normally. I have an albuterol inhaler and I think I've used it once in the past year.

Actually I just assume its my asthma that makes my lungs burn this way.....I suppose it cold be something else. I've always been like this...I remember in high school when we had to run the mil, I could never do it. I always ended up walking half of it.

I'm otherwise active and can lift weights for hours....but only cardio will burn off the fat and show all the muscly I have hiding underneath.

It could be your lungs just aren't conditioned to higher intensity cardio and that's where the intervals really come in handy. I would still try taking your albuterol 30-60 min before you try the cardio.

Is your asthma exercise induced? You could try the intervals....do a weight circuit then hit the cardio for 5 minutes, do a weight circut, cardio for 5 minutes....repeat. when you do your weights, do it continually without pause. Even cardio in small frequent burst can yeild as good of results as a full continuous session.

I've heard that just walking 5 miles day can help you lose weight, so maybe try getting a pedometer and getting extra steps in every day? Parking farther back in the parking lot, taking the stairs, etc. How many calories are you taking in each day?

Here's a good calorie calculator that might be useful.

Ok I looked up HIIT...basically you go like crazy for 5 minuts, tehn cool down..then do it again? I could prob do that. But is it as effective for burning fat as doing a half hr or hr of cardio continuously? Because I dont see why anyone woudl bust their ass for an hour when this seems so much easier....

Sometimes I can't tell the difference between the beginning of an asthma attack or just getting winded. If you're out of shape and not used to cardio, you lose your breath whether you have asthma or not. Just play through it, and pay attention to whether you're panting or wheezing; if you're panting, you're okay, but if you're wheezing, stop.

I do feel more like I'm wheezing...my whole body starts shaking. my lungs are burning and I can barely get any breath.

I wouldnt consider myself out of shape...I work out every day, not counting the workout I get at work.I'm in fairly good shape..but I still have pockets of fat on my hips and abs that I cant get rid of...and I know its because I'm not doing enough cardio.

I think that you'd have better luck with diet changes to slim down. It's much more efficient. If you have health insurance, I'd suggest talking to a doctor so s/he can tell you if it's asthma that's making you all wheezy and may even be able to give you something for it?
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.

I second that ^^. You sound like a very active person. Maybe you just need to clean up your diet. And do check with your doctor about the problems breathing. Best of luck!

Most step aerobics classes are all about intervals now. I run and bike, but I love my step classes. They are great for brainless exercise.

I have a dr's appt next week...believe me, I'm going to bring this up!

I've already adjusted my diet a LOT. I've cut down on total calories, I've cut way back on carbs and increased my protein and veggies. I try to make sure I eat breakfast(which I never really did before)...usually eggs, oatmeal or whole grain cereal.

I dont know how much more I could adjust my diet without starving myself.

I feel like I'm doing everything I'm supposed to and getting nowhere...its very frustrating.

Yes. In a car, what burns gas faster? Driving at 65 miles steady pace for an hour? Or stop and go driving in the city?

Stop and go burns more gas, faster.

HIIT is the most intensive, effective cardio workout you can do. Most people think that by running their asses off for an hour would be more effective. But, it's not. The key to HIIT is increasing the intervals after each "cool down" period. So, you start at level 1, bump up to level 2, cool down at level 1, bump up to level 3, cool down to level 2, bump up to level 4, cool down to level 3, bump to level 5, cool to level 4, etc. It keeps your body guessing and working hard as opposed to it just going into "cruise control" mode.

You will probably find that you are wiped after only about 30-35 minutes of a HIIT cardio routine. Do it for a few weeks along with your regular weight lifting and you'll start to see the weight come off.
