Default ARMs = possible problem with West Nile Virus?

Something I saw on one of the local news programs this week. People are not able to pay their mortgages when the payment increases, and nobody is taking care of the pools when the house is left empty. Standing water in the pools = mosquito breeding ground = possible problem with West Nile virus. They used Palmdale, CA as an example, but this will be affecting other cities as well.

An interesting potential side-effect of the sub-prime lending market.

there is an entire housing development located near me which was abandoned when a military base closed down. Rather than 'trash' the local real estate market by dumping these houses on the cheap, the US gov't simply left them to rot. Same scenario of toxic pools, plus fallen trees, caving in roofs etc. After 2 years the area became so dangerous that all of the utilities had to be cut and the development had to be fenced off.

I suspect that we'll wind up seeing something similar in other areas where major employers have left the area for good i.e. Detroit. After all, very few people want to move INTO the area since there are essentially no good employment opportunities remaining, thus every additional salable house only serves to further depress the resale value of 'livable' houses whose owners are trying to sell and move to greener pastures.
