Post Why do potential g/fs always ask me this...wtf

So today i met this girl (my homegirl hooked us up on a date) and as we were having brunch she asked me the following question:
"If your mom and i were drowning in the sea, who would you save? keep in mind you can only save one of us." I was like hmmm ive been asked this before and i always said that it was a ridiculous question and wouldnt choose. But this time i told her id save her if she would sleep with me...lol she was kinda surprised and upset at the same time....i was like lmao thats my answer and if you dont like it then get to steppin...she paused for a second and just said forget about that question. The rest of the date seemed all right but now im wondering will she call me? lol only time will tell...eh just a rant cause i have nothing else to do right now but wait...

    mom, dude. you pick mom.

no offense to potential gf's but mom birthed me, cared for me, and definitely loves me.

wife vs. mom would be a tougher choice as that's pretty even ground imo. but i'm also biased as i have two ex-wives so i'd pick mom again in that situation.

but wife & mother of my kids vs. mom would finally win over "mom".

That's a fucked up question for a first date. I'd say Mom, and never call the psycho back.

Step away from the crazy. A gal who asks that kind of question, and on a FIRST DATE(!), has a questionable view on what constitutes YOUR reality, and her place in it--not to mention an entitlement complex just waiting to explode. Just say no.

A good response to such a stupid question could have been "How is that, in any way, a helpful question in us getting to know each other?"

actually, imo i think it was very helpful in letting sheep know the person he was on a date with.

i would've answered it just as i noted. i probably would not ever speak with the psycho afterwards (just as others noted) but knowing she was nuts right upfront, probably saved sheep a whole lotta grief later on imho.

it's not an appropriate question for anyone but very significant others. any comparison to someone as close as a parent or sibling needs to be held off until that significant other can attain the same/similar status in your life. i.e. "hi, i just met you and you want to compare yourself with my mother? well, you lose." end-of-discussion.

but i do agree with paintbaby that that girl probably has a very skewed viewpoint of her existence. otoh, i think sheep's answer only reinforced that. d'oh.

Since you've had that question asked more than once, it makes me think that maybe there is some kind of Cosmo dating advice column that recommends this question be asked, or a self help book or something?

I'd answer something with "I'd jump in and die trying to save you both" or "I'm an excellent swimmer with lifeguard certification, so a double water rescue wouldn't be a problem for me" or "My mom never goes anywhere near water, so you'd be the only one who would need rescuing" or "My mom was an Olympic swimmer, so you'd be the only one who would need rescuing".

A ridiculous question deserves a ridiculous answer. One would think that getting to know the person's beliefs and upbringing might be of greater interest on a date than some stupid hypothetical question.

What ever happened to "What kind of music do you like? What do you do for fun? Favorite movie/book/food?" Wow, that's a disturbing thing to ask. Has anyone read Sex, Drugs, and CoCo Puffs? There's a really funny chapter on wild questions.

Thanks again for the feedback guys, i just received call from Lori (thats the chicks name) about 5 mins ago...she wants to see me again tonight and i said okay before i answer that, why did you ask me that question? Her reply was to see if i was a "mommas boy".......i answered with a "oh i see" and id love to go out again as friends...i waited for her answer but all i heard was like a long pause...i kept saying "hello..hello?" and then she finally replied your going out with me, ill be at your house at 8pm *click. Guys now my question is...How do i distance myself from this kind of girl, im not interested anymore and i dont wanna deal with some possible drama...advice?

P.S. Im actually pretty scared right now....also this isnt the same Lori who is on my Myspace...

Just tell her you aren't interested. And tell her why you aren't interested, and that should be the end of the discussion. It's not like you are going to break her heart after only one date.

    Or tell her you're gay...

I would just be upfront. Don't worry about offending her - I would have been offended by that question.

Oh Jesus---a cryptic silence, and then she TELLS you you're going out with her?? Doesn't give you a chance to answer, and tells you when she'll be showing up? Uh, yeah. This one has stalker potential written all over her. Find something else to do--quickly. This one isn't hearing you--which means your boundaries won't be much she'll be worrying about stepping over. Don't worry about hurting her feelings, just tell her you aren't interested in seeing her again.

And as to her answer--to see if you are a momma's boy--this is how she tests the waters for THAT? By asking you if you'd let your mother drown, in her favor? Frankly, I'd be more worried if a man said he would let his own mother drown in order to rescue a virtual stranger. Her thought processes are questionable, to say the least.
