    Default Smoking ban in IL?

I just heard today that the senate approved a bill that would make all of Illinois smoke free in buildings. The house still has to approve it for it to go through, and they won't decide until mid april.

I think this would kill our already slow business over the river from Missouri (where smoking would still be allowed). What do you guys think?

The whole country's going to have those laws before too much longer, and thank goodness for it. I don't know why so many of them haven't passed them yet. Yes, I am a conservative, but the states are perfectly entitled to pass laws like this to promote the public welfare; there's no reason why junkies should be allowed to blow poison in everyone else's face and befoul the environment for everyone around them. In case you can't tell, I HATE smoke.

California hasn't suffered for our law here. The junkies go outside when they need a fix, and the rest of us can hang out in the bar without smelling like an ashtray when we go home. I love it.

Jenna, if the law is passed the "East Side" clubs will be hurt. At the same time though things are allowed in Illinois that aren't allowed, or at least not as much, in MO. Many people think of their visits to these clubs as an escape into slightly dangerous territory and though the ban will tarnish that it won't do away with it. I wouldn't be surprised if "mileage" and "extras" increased after the ban.

as a smoker, i have to say i dont agree with any of you, but i dont feel like debating at the moment.. i feel that a BUSINESS owner is the one who has the right to choose if it will be smoke free or not.

i will say that i got a phone call 2 nights ago for someone asking if i wanted to vote to pass the smoking ban, and i LITERALLY screamed into the phone and slammed it down.

I agree, it should be up to the business owner to go non smoking or not. I'm sick of big brother telling me I have to do this or that, I don't like the fact that I smoke but I do.

Each place should be able to make its own rules. this is supposed to be America! I am deathly allergic to cigarette smoke. Because of this I make a CHOICE on where to go and where not to. Just like a smoker can decide not to go to a non smoke friendly place. Why change that? Who are any of us to say someone should or should not allow smoking in their place. Its the owners right to decide if its allowed or not. anything else simply is NOT freedom

    I like to smoke.

Most of the places around here have had this ban....

Where I live still has smoking sections in restaurants but it's hard to find anywhere else.

    Eh. Businesses got by.

Extra taxes piss off smokers, and random bans piss off smokers, and the ticket I got for 100 bucks for smoking on a balcony pissed me off, but...we are bad people because we smoke so it's justified. Eh. Well. I think it should be up to the businesss owners.

I never minded smoke when I didn't smoke, but I understand why people do, but seperate smoking rooms shouldn't be a big deal. I donno....

I agree with Emily, though. *glances around for big brother cameras behind her paintings*

personlly i thikn the "no smoking ban" is stupid.

okay - resturants, public places - OK , theyre co9uld be lil kids n there n what not

HOWEVER - in bars, strip clubs, nightclubs...we're all adults here. we know smokings bad for you. we choose to do it anyway. i mean drinking n smoking go hand in hand!

here, that law was just passed a few months ago. n ive noticed that there were DEFIN ELY *MORE* people who DID smoke, then who did not. i could go up to pretty much ANYONE n i could bum a cig.

it didnt hurt business - but it sure made it damn un-convient.

the last club i worked at, didnt have a specail area for the dancers to smoke..n they didnt want us going outside with our "stripper clothes" on - so we would have to go to the fucking dressing room, n put our fucking sweats n big ol sweaters on to go outside n SMOKE - AROUND with other customers! B EH! i didnt want any customers seeeing me in my fucking raggy clothes that i just use to n from work!

at least n the club i work at now theres a specail outside smoking place for us gals....n we're allowed to go as IS, bare ass with g-string on a chair and all

Something similar is soon going into effect in AZ and I think it is great. I hate breathing other peoples' smoke and smelling like it. Not to mention what it is doing to my health.

I think it should be up the the businesses as well. Most businesses cater to certain crowds. So smoking environments is part of their livihood.

I do not smoke or like being in smoky environments. Most places do not bother me, but some places do. So I choose not to go to those places.

Nobody's saying you guys can't smoke. You just have to go outside where there is better circulation. Yes, you have a right to smoke, and I have a right to enjoy myself without having noxious poison blown in my face so that I can't breathe or taste my food. It is a perfectly reasonable compromise to expect the smokers to go outside so that the indoor environment remains enjoyable for EVERYONE, not just the smokers.

Ohio has the ban, but no one enforces it. Shame too since govt. was so focused on getting this ban in place, they never took the time out to write out what would HAPPEN if you broke the rule. So until the state figures out what the consequence will be for establishments that still allow smoking, most places are still allowing smoking, such as my club.

I'll be so happy when the ban is actually enforced.

I understand the point you're making Honey, but don't you see how for me (a non-smoker) how I feel about sitting in a restaurant smelling that crap. Yea, it's your body, and you can choose to smoke if you want to BUT for me, the non-smoker sitting in that same room with you is making me inhale that as well. And no imaginary line (smoking side and non-smoking side) is going to keep me from inhaling that.

I've often wondered how it will effect my work if it passes. We are the only liquor bar and I know a few guys will stick around even longer since they can smoke as well. ( a lot of people only smoke when they drink. )

however, I know that there are a TON of guys and people in general who don't smoke anymore and most are tourists from other cities, that are use to not being able to smoke inside buildings.

I would say it would effect business in SC however, it's an all over ban. So regardless there isn't much they can do about it and it isn't like they can go somewhere else.

Just a quick update. The smoking ban was passed and now is awaiting Gov. Blowjobabitch's signature.

Clubs I've worked at in Columbus enforce it like crazy. Most have built smoking patios (w/ outdoor heaters for winter) that allow you to step out without actually leaving the club. One club even allowed lapdances out there (it feels deliciously bad to be almost nude outside on a hot summer's night, lol).

Granted, some of the places still look the other way when girls smoke in the dressing room, which I hate cus you'll have 7 girls puffin' on cigs in a room the size of a small bedroom. Which is horrendous for my asthma and always makes me run for my inhalor.

I danced in clubs around here before and after the ban, and I like it so much better now. My hair & clothes don't reek of smoke, so I'm not running to the shower to wash my stinky hair after work. Now I just run to the shower to wash off slobbery man spit and tranny makeup

It's going to piss people off at first but do you really think it's going to stop people from going out to eat or whatever for long?? I can see how it would slow down the sc's but after a while the smokers will get over it and learn to go a long time without smoking. Maybe people I care about will even stop smoking!

I think it depends on where you live. For example, from downtown Cincy, it's literally 2min over the bridge to get to KY. And only 20min to go to Indiana. If people want to smoke, and have a good time that's where they are going to go. Maybe not the restaurant folks, but the SC and bar-folks will.

Thought I'd bump this thread back up rather than starting a new one. Hope that is okay.

The Illinois Smoking ban has been in effect for a little over a week now. Unfortunately the "rules" that have to written by the Illinois Department of Public Health and then approved by a joint legislative committee have still not been approved. The department has tried twice now and each time they've been shot down by the committee. This is causing some consternation among business owners.

I've been to one Saint Louis area - but in IL - strip club since the ban. The Hollywood Showclub in Washington Park has opened a separate in house tobacco shop in what used to be their Champaign room. The law has a provision that you can smoke in a business that has 80% of its revenue from tobacco and was opened prior to January 1, 2008. I think old Bob R. might have made that deadline by just a few hours if that. I didn't go in but my understanding is that people can go in and buy cigarettes, cigars, etc. or just go in and smoke.

The late afternoon that I stopped into the club seemed very dead. But whether that had anything to do with the smoking ban who knows. This time of year does seem to be slower for the clubs in general since people tend to overspend for Christmas.

Does anyone know how the other clubs are trying to cope with the smoking ban?

I thought they pass the law, and it was to go into affect on the first of Jan. Every bar, club and restraunt dose not allow smoking withthin 15 feet from the establishment. Well at least in Chicago. I notice people are a bit more cranky than usual. But some say it helps that nobody else is smoking. Now I notice this bann affect people from out of town. I also notice that a lot customer complain it takes the feel out of strips clubs. They say strips clubs suppose to be smoky and full of boose and nude women. I think it affects the club it takes the fun out of being bad.

    smoking = bad
    girls dancing sexually= bad
    booze= fun+bad

I kinda of wonder how the completly nude clubs are doing! You cant smoke or drink.

I think they should put regulations on the tabaco company. If the second hand smoke is so bad. I think this law reminds me of when they took away the booze in the 1920's. It did not last long, because people did it anyway! But it dose violates are rights.

Well, Hustler has been very slow but I think that is more people being broke and all the changes in drink specials/dances than the smoking ban. I'm loving working in a club with no smoke!

Bob is so good at running that club! Hustler is trying to get a permit to make a champaine room a smoking room, but who knows if it will happen. I feel bad for the dancers that smoke because they have to put their clothes on and walk out the front door to smoke.

New York has about 5 years of experience with no-smoking laws. Basically the numbers show the following ... that 20-25% of New Yorkers still smoke ... that these 20-25% of New Yorkers spend far less time and money going out to restaurants / bars / clubs ... that these 20-25% of New Yorkers now spend far more money on take-out food, liquor stores, and OTC 'private shows' since the party has been moved from public venues to private ones (where they can still smoke to their heart's content). The numbers also show that total revenues at New York restaurants / bars / clubs are down by 25% or more versus years preceeding the no-smoking laws - or at least at those establishments that enforce tne no-smoking laws.

New York also allowed certain exemptions to the no-smoking laws, such as 'smoke shops'. Those clubs that were able to land a no-smoking exemption via the sale of cigars etc. (which are mostly in Manhattan) do a fantastic amount of business, since they are now the only clubs around where guys can still smoke + drink + get a lap dance.

In other New York clubs where the no-smoking laws are in full effect, arguably what has happened is that the number of club customers fell off slightly - mostly because smokers don't bother travelling to a club anymore. Of the smokers who still go to clubs, they generally stay in the club a shorter time and buy fewer private dances, because their nicotine 'clock' is running. This also spills over into bachelor party groups, college student groups etc. where the smoking members of the group convince the non-smoking members that it's time to pack up, pile into the cars (and light up a smoke), and drive on to the next bar / club after an hour or so.

One thing New York chose to do which really hurt business was to outlaw 'attached structures' for the purpose of smoking (other than the cigar store exception). But this means that in order for a New Yorker to go outside a restaurant / bar / club for a smoke this time of year, they'll literally be standing in the rain / snow at freezing temperatures. This serves as a strong motivator for the 'private party' scenario, since there are no laws preventing smoking in private houses. This also makes the 'private show' aspect very busy this time of year. In fact, some of the 'hottest' dancers are now spending considerably less time working in clubs and spending more time accepting private show bookings.

obvious conclusions for dancers who are working in an area that has recently enacted no-smoking laws. A) find a club that has a smoking exemption of some sort, because that club will become a 'magnet' for smoking customers. B) Organize yourselves to start offering 'private shows', as demand for OTC 'performances' will probably increase dramatically at the same time that ITC customer spending will decline.
