    Default Poles

This is a question for those who do pole tricks. Did you pick it up gradually while working or take a class? I was thinking I'd feel silly just trying out a pole trick for the first time while on stage with people watching, so how does one develop that skill?

Go before or after work and play on it--hopefully with someone around who knows some tricks. Won't work too well if there's a dayshift, like at my current club, but last night after closing we were playing around as we sometimes do, and Ella (one of my favorite dancers who has been struggling with this for a while) finally learned a simple trick that gave her a feel for it--she was so excited, I loved it.

Or try some things that are easy when it's slower in the club.

It's better to play and relax and have fun with it--don't worry about trying to be acrobatic your first time. There are spins and things you can do at stage level that will give you a feel for the flow of pole work to get you comfortable with it.

if you can learn the two basic tricks, you can learn them all.
The first is that upside down flip thing. The Second is any basic spin.
The first thing I learned was to climb up the pole, and just sit there. As you continue you climbing you'll get strong enough to do other stuff. If you work in a club with a tall pole, you'll get stronger in no time.

Just be careful.....learning on your own by watching is fine...but be sure not to harm yourself!

Remember to hold your shoulders back and down slightly, so you do not need a shoulder replacement within the next 5 years!

I am a pole instructor, so I am very cautious to explain that if you do not follow proper body positions you WILL hurt yourself!

Talk to the girls who are doing the moves already, some will help...some wont! If you are looking for classes...I offer live online classes. check out the site www.polejunkies.com and log onto the forum, there are lots of questions asked and answered!

i worked dayshifts for the first few months i danced and when it was slow the girls that knew pole would teach eachother. thats how most girls start learning. once youve got the basics down and have built your strength by climbing the pole just watch the other girls or dig around on youtube for videos and look for new moves. watch very very closely and give them a try when its dead in the club. online lessons like alena suggested are a great idea if you have access to a pole and computer at the same time otherwise there seem to be plenty of pole studios opening everywhere.

Don't attempt a trick for the first time when you're on stage in front of custies. It's not as easy as some girls make it look. It was easy for me to learn because I am naturally flexible and I'm small, so my body adjusted to the tricks very easily. There's alot of clips on youtube of girls doing polework. You could watch them, study how they preform the tricks, then try them on a slow day at work. The manager at my club lets girls practice on a closed stage when it's slow.

I've learned pole tricks either after work or times where it's dead in my club. Other girls have showed me things, or my one manager is a former dancer herself and helps the girls out. I always tried out the new things when there are just a few customers around that aren't really paying attention anyway. At first things are awkward, but you pick them up over time.

This is probably obvious to you, but if you really want some tricks, get a pole in your house!

If you have the $, a pole class can be fun, but you probably wont learn a whole lot. I took a 5 week course for over $200 and only got a few simple moves. It was fun, but I really shouldnt have spent that money.

So I got a pole in my bedroom. This is worth the money since you have it forever and you can use it as often as you want. Its a great piece of workout equipment and nice if you dance for someone at home, as i do.
