Default Makeup Tutorial #2 - Blue & Purple

Yay, I have completed another makeup tutorial for you ladies. This time we will be using some color!! I know many of you want to learn how to use brighter colors, so I’m going to teach you a look using blue and purple eyeshadows. Remember you can easily substitute MAC with drugstore lines, just look for similar colors, although MAC shadows are truly the best (esp for work!) and I highly recommend them. Alright, so here we go!!

Products Used (all MAC, unless otherwise noted, sorry no pic):

    Silverbleu Shadestick
    Tilt e/s
    Deep Truth e/s
    Arena e/s
    Blue pigment
    Parfait Amour e/s
    Charcoal Brown e/s (brows)
    Fluidline in Blacktrack
    Drugstore lashes
    Loreal Voluminous mascara – black

Brushes: MAC 217, 266, 263, 190, Sephora Powder, Blush, and 4 eye brushes – angled, small, large, and short round crease brush
    Pointed tweezers
    Clear lash glue

    Studio Finish Concealer NW30
    Select Spf 15 NW40
Loose Blot Powder in Medium Dark
    Bronzer in Matte Bronze
    Nars Blush in Outlaw
Mineralize Skin Finish in Shooting Star
Mineralize Skin Finish in Porcelain Pink

    Spring Bean l/g
    Victoria’s Secret l/g (don’t remember name)

    1) Start with a clean, makeup-less face (yuck!). Apply moisturizer, pluck your brows, and apply a bit of chapstick/lip balm so your lips will be nice and soft for lipgloss later.

    2) Apply Silverbleu shadestick (or whatever base you choose) all over your eyelid, from lashline to just above crease. (I originally applied up to the brow, but didn’t like it so I wiped some off.) Also apply a bit of concealer underneath your eye, where it will be hard to get really close to your eyeliner later.

    3) Pick up some Tilt e/s with the 217 brush (or any large fluffy brush.) This shadow is one of the reasons you should consider splurging on MAC – it is a duochrome, meaning it is blue, but can look teal from another angle. Very hard to find in drugstore shadows. Not sure if you can see it in the photo.

Anyway, apply the shadow from inner to outer crease using a light windshield wiper motion.

    4) It should now look like this:

    5) Pick up some Blue pigment with the Sephora Short Round Crease brush. This is an excellent crease brush when you want to be really precise.

Apply in crease, sort of in the middle of the Tilt shadow we just applied to brighten it up.

    6) It should now look like this:

    7) Pick up some Arena e/s with a large eye brush. This is the browbone color I always use, but you can choose something lighter if you wish.

Let’s blend away the harsh lines of the blue we applied. Apply on your browbone and blend down so you can’t really tell where one ends and the other begins.

8 ) K, so now it is starting to look not so scary:

    9) Time for purple! Pick up some Parfait Amour e/s with the small eye brush.

Apply on the lid and blend up into the blue eyeshadow we applied earlier.

    10) Now we are going to darken the outer corner and crease. Using the Short Round Crease brush from Sephora again, pick up some Deep Truth e/s (one of my favorite colors, ever).

Draw a short line from the outer corner to the end of the blue shadow. Hard to get a pic of, but it should look like this:

Now from the end of that line, gently draw the Deep Truth e/s up into the crease.

    11) Now let’s blend away the dark lines of that color. Pick up some more Tilt e/s with the large fluffy brush. Apply lightly over the Deep Truth e/s. Be careful not to blend so much that you completely erase the darker shadow, just enough so there are no harsh edges.

    12) I like my eyeshadow dark underneath my eyes, it just looks sexier to me. Pick up some more Deep Truth e/s with an angle brush. Apply underneath from the inner corner to the outer, blending with e/s on the upper outer corner.

    13) This is where we are now:

    14) Strong eye makeup requires strong brows, so let’s fill them in. I am using Charcoal Brown e/s applied with an angle brush.

    With finished brows:

    15) Time to apply eyeliner. I am using Fluidline in Blacktrack applied with an angle brush. I did not get a pic of the step, but apply from the inner corner to to past the outer corner. Apply on the waterline/inner rim (use the q tip trick mentioned in the other thread) and up into the upper line you applied at the outer corner. This is what it should look like:

    16) As I have said before, fake eyelashes are a requirement for stripper makeup, IMO. First apply a light coat of mascara. Apply a thin line of glue to your lashes and wave it back and forth til the glue is a bit tacky. It takes a bit of practice to know when, but usually 30-45 seconds. If you don’t wait, they will slide around on your lid, which is a pain in the ass.

    17) Now the application – like I said earlier, rest your elbows on a table to help steady your hands. I gently grab the lashes on each side and place them as close to my actual lashes as I can, trying not to let any glue touch my lashes. (It hurts and can pull out your lashes. When learning, you are bound to do this at least a few times. Use baby oil to dissolve the glue when taking them off and be GENTLE.) I try to place the middle of the lashes first, then adjust the inner and outer corners, using tweezers if I need to.

Here is a pic with them applied just on one eye, so you can see the difference even these more natural lashes make.

With lashes on both eyes and a couple coats of mascara:

1 Great so now we are done with the eyes! Let’s perfect that face. First wipe off any eyeshadow that may have fallen onto your face. Concealer time! I am using MAC Studio Finish concealer here, applied with my ring finger (your ring finger has the lightest touch). Touch up underneath the eyes and cover any blemishes.

    19) Foundation time – I use MAC Select Spf 15 applied with 190 brush. I like using a brush opposed to a sponge – sponges absorb a lot of product and you end up wasting a lot. Apply where needed and blend well.

    20) . Grab your big fluffy powder brush and get some loose powder (I like MAC Blot Powder) on it. Tap off the excess and apply all over your face to set the foundation and keep shine away (bring it work tho – if you get hot, you will get shiny and be happy you have this with you). Pay extra attention to the typically shiny areas – forehead, nose, and cheeks.

    See, no shine!

    21) Now we want to define those cheekbones. Use an angle brush to pick up some matte bronzer or powder (loose or pressed) that is darker than your skin tone. Suck in your cheeks and make the fishy face. Apply below your cheekbones, following the natural line of your jaw.

    It should look like this:

    22) Now we need blush to bring that healthy, sexy, just had as orgasm flush to your face. I use the same brush I used for bronzer to pick up some Nars Outlaw blush. I like to apply it just above the bronzer, blending the two into each other and blending it onto the apples of my cheeks.

This is what it should look like:

    23) Now I apply an all-over bronzer with a bit of sparkle to blend everything together and give my whole face (and neck) a sunny glow. I am using MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Shooting Star and the same powder brush from before. Tap off the excess and lightly apply all over, including your neck.

This is where we are now:

    24) Let’s highlight those cheekbones. I am using MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Porcelain Pink applied with the same powder brush. Apply to the highest part of your cheekbone to just before your cheeks, following the natural line.

    25) This is where we are now:

    26) Lipgloss and we’re done! I am using MAC Spring Bean, which is green in the tube, but on it is such a gorgeous nude. I read somewhere that the green neutralizes the red in your lips and goes on a caramel-y shade.

Finished look (I had to go straighten my hair!):

    27) I later decided the nude lips looked a little flat and changed it to mauve-y pink by Victoria’s Secret, can’t remember the name.

I know that these colors aren’t for everyone. If you are very fair or just nervous about using 2 bright colors, you can still use the techniques. Try a bright color in the crease and a neutral one on the lid. Again, if any step are unclear, let me know and I will try to explain better.

    Enjoy!

Hey, it's very cute. I just got like 30 sample sizes in the mail and I'm tempted to go use them. I was going to make a tut yesterday, but I thougth against it (got lazy) these colors look good. The only thing I dont own is a shadestick. I'll have to fig something out.

Question: Should I bring my makeup (the eyeshadow) to work with me to touch up? I want to keep this vibrant all night!

CK - did you order the samples from ebay?? I love doing that! That is how I made my collection go from 10 pigments to 40! You could also use a bit of foundation or concealer topped with powder as a base, instead of a shadestick. I rarely bring my shadows into work since they generally last all night long anyways. And I'm terrified one of those pigments is going to become unscrewed in my makeup bag and create a big mess. Maybe bring them the first night in case you need them, but if you don't, then you don't need to bring them next time.

Kabukicho - I have seen some girls with blue eyes rock some gorgeous blue eye shadow. They say go for a contrasting color to your eyes, but my one friend with blue eyes said she gets the most compliments on her eyes when she wears matching eye shadow. You could definitely do green in the crease (Humid from MAC is gorgeous) as that is always complimentary to blue eyes. I still say experiment with blue to see if it will work for you.
