There's an SPCA or Human Society right around the corner. I want to go play with some animals, namely doggies, but am not going to get one right now.
Is it cruel to do that? I really, really want to play with doggies and love them!

Are you kidding me? Do you know how starved for attention they are??
You know I'm not messing with you. But the cruelty will be self-inflicted, if anything. You'll love it, but you'll want to take them all home, and it'll hurt to see so much desperation and longing.
Do it, though--I would love to find a Kitty Heaven like the one I posted about in the Lounge a year ago or so, a room in which I could roll around on the floor with about 8-9 cats purring and rubbing all over me.
I always tossed them a few bucks, and petted all the dogs, too. The dogs are tougher, though--they really, really need attention.

Today, I conducted "MasterCat Theatre" and developed a dialogue between the two. Hopefully my neighbors weren't out in their yards listening to me affecting a British accent and creating a love story. "Tale of Two Kitties".

It depends on the shelter; most of them are in cages, and therefore not easy to play with. But like a $20 donation will probably get you all the playtime they can viably provide.
ETA - Kat I want to be one of your neighbours so bad.

Hahaha, my cat is an only child, so he just talks to me. But we have great conversations, as he's highly articulate, and has a multitude of interests. For example, I had no idea that he was a professional ninja until he told me just the other day. That's why he's so good at killing shit and leaving it to quietly die somewhere in my bedroom. He DOES tend to complain about how much I talk about his face and head. I'm all "Who's my little mushface fuzzyheadcat?" and he's all "Mom there's a lot more to me than just my mushy face, you know. By pidgeonholing me you're denying that I possess any complexity at all and reducing me to an unrealistically single-faceted entity."
Ahem. You want to talk about neighbors thinking you're crazy? I suspect I may have a lot to contribute.
But back to the topic at hand... I think it's the OPPOSITE of cruel to play with the shelter dogs. ESPECIALLY the dogs, because dogs are so social and so human-reliant. I'd guess that 90% of all shelter dogs don't get their emotional needs met, not because shelter staff is bad, but because they're left alone so much due to shelter overcrowding, shortage of volunteers, etc. I would guess this is particularly true of older dogs, if the shelter by you is a no-kill shelter. Almost everyone will look at the puppies first and pet them, squeal over them, play with them, etc. It tends to be the older animals who are most ignored. It's one of the more heart-wrenching aspects of no-kill shelters... on one hand, the animals get to remain alive, but on the other hand, older animals often live out the remainder of their lives in shelters. But that's another topic altogether. Domestic animal policies/ practices/ laws are issues that are very close to my heart, and I really think that anyone who wants to get involved with their local shelter in any capacity is doing something wonderful.
Yeah, I want to play with the older dogs for sure! And adopt one....but kitty has lived with dogs before and would not be happy. Perhaps she would start to appreciate her man finally. Then they would run off together to their secret den of love, somewhere 20 feet away, and hole up there forever! I can't live without her!
