    Default Floorwork

I've done a search on this and haven't been able to find the info I'm looking for:

I've just started a week ago and have a few simple moves on the floor (plus the important basics, slowness and eye contact) but I'm tired of doing the same stuff over and over--it's bland. I've watched the other girls but don't want to outright steal their moves right off the bat...so if there's a thread that covers this, please point me in the right direction or feel free to give your .02

The book "S Factor" has some good floor work moves. I actually do stuff that I picked up from Belly Dancing.

Don't feel bad about copying other girls stuff, everyone does it, just make it your own. Make a girls' slow move more bouncy and flirty, or add some arm movement...whatever.

Also, it's hard for me to explain, but work on the transitions between moves. I think that is pretty important with floor work, when you're going in and out of moves - make those positions just as sensual and erotic.

Part of the reason there isn't a lot of specific dance instruction on here is that we can't describe it. I wish there were names for the stripper moves. Like, what should we call it when you lie on the stage and arch your back? Or when you kneel all the way down so you're sitting between your knees and look behind you at the customer? We know what to call the splits and backbends, and you can visualize that because you know what they are from gymnastics or cheerleading or whatnot, but some of the other moves, which are totally a part of the stripper repertoire, have no names. Sigh. Are there any dance students in the house who want to start codifying them?

So, let's see, I think the most important thing to know is that you SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE YOUR TOES POINTED! I hate it when I see some dancer with her feet flopping around as she humps the stage. Keep your feet extended and pointed; that makes everything look better.

Getting on the floor: you can get there doing the splits, by kneeling down on one knee and then the other, sliding down the pole.

What to do when there: rotate your hips while kneeling, use arm movements, arch your back. Bellydance floorwork illustrates some of the things dancers do on the floor (of course our variations are more subtle).

Holiday is spot on about the transitions -- try not to ever be in a squatting position supporting yourself on the floor with your hands. That is a 100% newbie giveaway.

I'm serious about coming up with names for these moves, people. It would make it so much easier to explain. I have heard that thing where the dancer is on her back, supporting herself only with hands and feet, and gyrating her pelvis, called the crab (cause it's kind of in the position of a crabwalk) but that sounds ugly.

The Crab. Bleh. I think Sheila Kelley names all of her moves in The S Factor. Like "Prancing Goddess" for reclining on your elbows and alternately bending and extending your legs, I suppose a sexed up version of "The Bicycle" and a "Leg Splay" or something for speadin' em.

I have this feeling that you are probably doing just fine LilMissSophie, I recently went out strip clubbin' purely as a patron and was reminded how much it doesn't matter when a dancer repeats herself, it is usually entertaining enough just watching her walk around naked!

Yea, S Factor has some nice moves in it. Check and see if the library has it, if not go to half.com and get it for cheap!

I've found a lot of floorwork to be based on natural feel and experience. If you have dance experience of any kind, it helps a lot.

Confidence is also key. If you feel sexy sticking your ass in the air while getting up or spreading your legs on the ground (simple, vulgar moves, I know), it will show in your performance, and the audience notices, also.

I teach dance class at my club. I also teach ballet. I find when i plan out a dance class or even when im trying to break down a move for a new girl, I will use the ballet names of positions and moves.

Example: standing with feet appart, legs straight, and bending over at the hips
I would call that a half hinge in 2nd

I think that because there are so many variations (especially with floor moves), that naming them would be almost impossible

OMG, yes! A few years of ballet has taught me how important this is. When you keep your toes pointed, it extends the leg line and makes your legs look longer and better. When you don't point them, it chops the leg line and looks stubby.

Matter of fact, this should be posted in Stripping General. I see tons of girls that have danced for years still making this mistake.

As far as floorwork, someone should post a vid on youtube of just floorwork. That would be great!!

hehe i tottaly agree. i do alot of 'doggystyle' postions, moving up and down, and i do it with confidence..even if it was not that 'fancy', everyone loves it. it shows off yer body, arching yer back, showing yer boobs jiggling downward, and yer ass up in the air

i do alot of on my knees and moving my hips to the music.

There are some good demonstrations of the basic moves every girl needs to know on www.verticaldance.com. It is more pole work oriented, but it the basic floor moves and transitions (i.e. pole to floor, floor to pole, etc)

Searching those Youtube links brought me to this -- the ballerina stripper

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rm5lQUNx1C8&NR=1 and a few other videos from some the same competition

I'd always thought about doing a ballet themed pole dance but never seen it done.

    I'm drooling over this.

Well one of those videos is mine....PoleJunkies

The last vid listed is Elena Gibson from the UK...incredible performer.

I do teach a floor class, basically a stripper class for those who do not have a pole at home!

There are actually names for floor moves...

Chest Rise - flat back arms to sides, raise your chest up (weight on arms)

How you get to the floor is called a floor mount...to get up is a floor rise.

There are over 75 floor moves that I currently teach...crawl, slide crawl, attitude sit, sub roll, dom roll, reverse plank....the list goes on! Also included are power moves, or positions held (stalls).

I have never made a vid on floor shows, maybe I should??

Yes Alena please! That would be really helpful, esp if you could name the moves as you do them.

Well I decided to play around on the floor for ya!!! lol!

First I will explain some things. In Canada, we use blankets during our floor shows. I tried very hard to stay off the pole...and this is what I came up with.

There is a list of moves at the end of the song. They are stated in order performed.

Blankets are used for a few reasons:

    1. Hygene, the stuff that your shoes bring on stage is discusting.

    2. Ease in executing flowing floor moves, allows you to slide.

    3. Protection of knees, hips and shoulders from severe bruising.

    4. Adds a sensual note...blanket implies bed!
