Default wtf? MORE pet food has been recalled???

I forget the exact brands but even more food has been recalled including some dry cat food now. I'm going to start making my dogs meals and popping pre-portioned servings into the freezer. Has anybody ever made their own pet food? How do you ensure their diet is balanced?

What what what? This is ridiculous. I had to look this up to make sure my babies are okay. Found this link http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/31/pet....ap/index.html

FYI My cats have been switched to Science Diet and so far that checks out okay. Cat people may want to give SD a try.

del monte is the company. I just saw it on the news again. I'm not sure who makes the dry cat food that was recalled.

omg. taken from the link z posted, "The FDA was working to rule out the possibility that the contaminated wheat gluten could have made it into any human food."

I watched a news special on organic pet foods. They also showed how to make your own. They put some veggies in a food processor (she also said you could juice it and then put the pulp back in) and put in a raw chicken breast, too.

...Although I think I'd be too paranoid to give my dog raw meat if I had one...

^actually, the BARF (bones and raw food) diet is supposed to be quite healthy for dogs. I seem to remember adding flax seed oil or something to it. I'm not really down for feeding the dog raw stuff at this point; I'm just going to make extra chicken/beef/rice etc. I would hate for her to be nutritionally deficient though...do they make pet multi-vitamins?

^I'm sure they do. I have some for my ferret. Um... no one's heard of any ferret food being recalled, right?

If you feel like lots of work you may buy Dr. Pitcairn (I love my Dr. Pitcairn); it involves supplements and crap. The reasoning is that dogs might ordinarily be able to self-regulate for deficiencies (like if they were short on calcium they would crave more bones) they can't when they only eat what we give them. Personally - I find my dogs glowy and happy and shiny if I give them oatmeal mixed with natural peanut butter in the morning, and in the evening a combination of ground beef or chicken or turkey or, you know, MEAT, maybe some ground organ meat, brown rice or quinoa or other grain, and some mashed up/blended/whatever vegetables (I find corn is a bad vegetable). You can throw in some flax seed oil for extra shininess. There are also a whackload of doggie "multivitamins" that you can mix into food; but honestly I don't think it is necessary. I've never seen a dog or cat suffering from malnutrition or any deficiency on a homemade diet, like ever. I do mix the Pitcairn "healthy powder" to add to the food. Better to serve it raw - if you are worried about bacteria keep it below 4 degrees C.

Rambling on about what they should do won't make it happen. I'm sorry to say this, but that's how it is.

Right now we have a significant number of people and organizations working on it. The US Food and Drug Administration are on it. We also have two entire Veterinary teams working, Purdue and the University of Guelph.

Both of those institutions (one US and one Canadian) are world class outfits! They are the BEST at what they do. Guess what...

They DO NOT KNOW what is causing the problem!

Folks, this stuff is complex. If the answer were simple (or obvious), they would have found it immediately. They didn't, so it'll be a wee bit of a fight.

The information in that CNN report does not add up. We are missing something. I won't pretend to be a veterinary expert, because I'm not, but I know enough about problem solving to know that something is going on that we do not understand.

So for now, here's what all of you with babies need to do...

    *** WATCH YOUR KIDS***

If they suddenly start to drink more, or urinate more, get lethargic, moody, etc. then you might have a problem.

Kidney failure doesn't happen instantly. It develops over a week or so. There are warning signs, so watch. If your kids suddenly start acting unusual, stop feeding them.

If you suspect something, go see your vet immediately! At this point, your vet may well be jammed-up. So, even if it takes you two days to get in to see him/her, do not feed your pets. Going without food for 3 days won't make them happy (trust me), but it beats the hell out of having their kidney's shut down!

I'm going to tell you to watch your kids again, because it's important!

Right now, the experts don't know what's causing the problem. Because they don't know what it is, they don't know WHERE it is. This recall might well expand. You'll be exposed to it and you won't know it. So watch your babies. Their lives might well depend on it.

    Very nice post. ^

At this point, I don't think it's safe to buy any of the products that are made b or have any connection to Menu Foods, whether or not they are on the list yet.

my mom sent me this in an email about safe pet foods...

The recent pet food recall by Menu Foods has been all over the news. We thought you’d appreciate hearing the latest information about this serious and sometimes confusing situation.

First, we’d like to reassure you that the recent nationwide pet food recall does not include any Mars Petcare US pet food products. All of our brands, including PEDIGREE® food for dogs, CESAR® canine cuisine, THE GOODLIFE RECIPE™ food for dogs and cats, WHISKAS® and SHEBA® food for cats, and TEMPTATIONS® cat treats, are safe for pets to enjoy.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now focusing its investigation on wheat gluten as the possible source of contamination that sparked the national recall of cans and pouches of pet food last week.

On March 23, the FDA confirmed the safety of products not involved in the recall. According to the FDA, pet owners should feel confident feeding their pets products not affected by the recall.

What’s more, we at Mars Petcare US have verified that wheat gluten is not sourced from any of the suppliers who are currently under investigation by the FDA.

The safety and nutritional quality of our pet food is our top priority because for many people, their pets are their top priorities.

For details on the recall, contact Menu Foods at 1-866-895-2708, 1-866-463-6738 or visit the company’s web site at: www.menufoods.com/recall.

    Yours truly,

    Mars Petcare US

It would seem that Purina is included...

I'll reiterate what I said before. They do not know what the contaminated ingredient is. So, they don't know where it is.

Right now they suspect wheat gluten, but they don't know. I'm fairly certain that whatever ingredient is causing the problem wasn't sold to just Menu Foods. No solvent business I know sells to just one customer. That's just not wise business sense!

That ingredient may well have been sold to EVERY pet food manufacturer. I'm not saying this is the case, rather that it is a possibility.

So, you do not know whether your pet food will or will not harm your baby.

As I said before... please keep an eye on your kids. You can identify kidney failure before it becomes fatal, but you can't if you are not paying attention.

Royal Canin products haven't made any of the lists. That is what I feed my cats. Their products are excellent, BTW.

I feed all of my dogs the dry Iams and their wet stuff was on the list, but the dry stuff wasn't so hopefully that'll be okay. That's all they'll eat really. I'm gonna keep a close eye on the list of them.

My cats' food doesn't even contain wheat gluten so I'm pretty sure they are okay:

I really urge everyone to switch to holistic pet foods. They are SO MUCH better for your animals.

Please, keep your little friends safe.

I have a story about this that I really haven't shared here, but I will now since we are talking about it.

A few months ago, I was at my local pet store trying to decide if I wanted to switch my cat's food t Wellness or not (based on a past thread here in which LilithMorrigan mentioned Wellness). Anyways, I was looking at the ingredient list and this lady comes up to me and starts asking what I'm interested in for my cat's diet. I thought she worked with the store, at first, but quickly realized she was a NUTRO sales rep. And let me tell you - she was a pushy bitch. After I said I wasn't interested in NUTRO, she basically told me that by feeding my cats anything but that, then I am a terrible cat-mom and I dont' deserve any animals. I mean, she was crazy. I ended up leaving there with wet and dry food from another brand and THANKFULLY I did not give in to her, or I would have purchased contaminated food! Thankfully, she was so pushy and annoying that I wouldn't even consider their stupid food for a split second. And right now luckily, none of my cat food is on the list.

However, since this recall, I've seriously considered switching to Wellness 100% of the time (right now, my cats just eat their wet food every other day for dinner).

That sucks about Nutro. I used to feed it to my cats years ago but it was harder to find back then and couldn't get it once I moved away from the area where I used to buy it. They liked it pretty well.
If some pushy cracked out sales lady came up to me in a store I probably wouldn't buy the food either.

I did a google search for Wellness. It seems like good stuff!

I've been feeding my puppy homemade food, but as I eat out often I will have to find a safe dog food brand. I just started trying out healthy recipes that were good for humans and dogs, like chicken w/ roasted carrots. There were so many possibly contaminated pet foods listed.
