Default Grr.. I shouldn't HAVE to and don't WANT to do amateur night

I want to try out a new club, but the only way they hire there is through amateur night -- it's a spearmint rhino. Why can't I just audition, dammit?

My whole problem with amateur night is that I really don't like interacting with the crowd that much.. I go on stage when I'm supposed to, but I do most of my selling by chatting guys up, not by sticking my head in their crotch while I'm on stage. I haven't ever been to an amateur night (my last club didn't have them), but I think I have a good idea of what goes on, and I just don't think I'd do all that great. I really don't like interacting with customers while I'm on stage -- i know you can make more money if you do, but I really prefer just doing my thing on stage, and then paying individual attention to custies later. I can be entertaining and all that, but I feel like, as an experienced dancer, I should not be obligated to do this stupid contest.

I know there are tons of threads asking how to do well at amateur night, so I won't ask for suggestions.. I just don't get why the stupid manager won't give me 5 minutes to audition by myself on a monday afternoon. Grmph.

I don't think you sound spoiled.

Just do the contest, though. They're most likely going to be judging you on your looks, body and skill, not on silly and unnecessary customer interactions. You probably don't even have to win to get the job.

Custy interaction is good marketing though. I recommend practicing it and integrating it into your act. I especially advise you to learn how to make each individual guy think you are smiling and winking at them. I don't remember how I did it though, or how to verbalize it.

You don't have to get nasty to interact, but it will help you scout prospects. Otherwise, stage is just a waste of time. Plus, some custys WILL think you are snobby if you don't interact. I'm not agreeing with that, but it occurs.

    Good luck, you'll do great!

I don't think you sound spoiled, after two years of dancing I wouldn't want to have to do amateur night either.
Good luck though and try to have fun.

You don't sound spoiled! I had to audition ONCE. My jaw hit the floor when the manager told me that I had to audition first. I mean, really! I fucking told him the other clubs I'd worked at and how long I'd done it, I was wearing a skimpy outfit... I had my make up done... He fucking SAW what I looked like. Ugh. Whatever, I made $100 off that stage show. It was still friggin' dumb, though.

Have you asked if an afternoon audition is an option? I have done that and gotten a "yes", I don't know about these big clubs though, they tend to treat you as a number. It does seem however, that the whole 'amateur' night audition is to see how the custies respond to you - not always a bad thing, but, yeah, it is annoying.

Yeah, I was there yesterday afternoon and asked him if there were ANY time I could have a separate audition, 'cause I work my other job wednesday nights. I'm just going to have to show up late... I usually get off my other job around 10, so I'll just head straight over there afterwards... But my showing up late means I won't have time to schmooze anyone to help me win, so that means I won't win.. whatever..

They do it 'cause it's part of their promotions to have an amateur night. Don't worry about it. It doesn't matter if you win or not, they just want to check you out.

Most auditions are just a formality--if they really aren't going to hire you they'll probably give the "Oh, we have too many girls" line. I never ever auditioned at a single club in Texas, but in Oregon almost every single club does auditions. I have no problem with it -- it's part of the job and they want to see if you can do it. No big deal.
