Default ARRGH! My favourite meds are now illegal

I just got a call from my doctor's office telling me that Zelnorm has been pulled from the market. That really SUCKS. Those happy little white pills were the only thing that helped my IBS when it got ridiculously bad. They regulate the serotonin in the intestines, and when I'm not on Zelnorm I am sometimes constipated for over a week. That is the worst feeling ever. I am oh so sad.

Apparently the pill has been giving older women heart attacks. I have been told "not to worry" because it's not affecting younger patients so much, but also that I am S.O.L. for the only prescription I have ever found that helped my gut.

Imagine having a broken digestion system, when nothing at all makes it move and things just pile uncomfortably up, and then you find magical relief that switches it back on, and now that magical relief also happens to destroy your cardio functioning. Bugger that.

Fuck a duck, man. It's back to gallons of peppermint tea, hypnotherapy, and witchcraft. Oh, and triple helpings of ex-lax when I get desperate.

This was just a rant, and also a warning to anyone else who's taking Zelnorm? Corsicafire maybe?

^^Dam, that sucks. Couldn't they just put the disclaimer on Zelnorm like how they do for BC pills? Hopefully there is an even better alternative than Zelnorm..

I took Zelnorm at first when I first saw a gastroenterologist (sp?). I usually fluctuate between constipation and diarrhea, but the constipation was in full force, so he gave me Zelnorm. All was good for a couple months, then one day out of the blue I got extremely sick! It was the damn Zelnorm. It had just suddenly started making me sick. I was told by my doc that it can do that, and you get no warning.

So I'm glad I'm off that stuff! Now I just watch what I eat, pay attention to what makes my IBS act up (I cannot drink Coke for instance) and I take Citrucel to keep regular. (Citrucel is good whether you have constipation or diarrhea, and is better than Metamucil because Metamucil can give you excess gas.)

Unfortunately CK, IBS is still mostly a mystery, so Zelnorm was the only drug out there so far, and that was just for IBS sufferers with constipation.

Aw man, that sucks. Is it still legal in the US? If it's that magical for you, maybe you'll want to hop over to Rochester (or wherever...I can't remember the closest US city to Ottawa) and pay out of pocket to see a doc?

This is probably silly, as I'm sure you've tried everything, but on the off chance...have you tried things like psyllium husk and cascara seed? They're both mighty effective for me if I get constipated. There is also a bar called Nu-lax that's being pimped near the pharmacy at my Shopper's...I got a few freebies from my doctor, just for fun, and they definitely work.

Are there any reputable sites that sell medications with out perscriptions and without the (canadian) FDA sticking their noses in everything?

Well, can't get any in the States either. Apparently an ambulance chaser in Florida might get me some cash if I tell him the pill made me dizzy though.

Good news is that it might be re-released under restricted conditions or something. I would totally go black market for that pill.

Also, I have tried regular gut movers like psyllium and various versions of fibre supplements...they work to varying degrees, but often can make me even more bloated/ gassy without making me go. Honestly, sometimes I can take twice the dose of extra strength exlax, and things still don't move. It's brutal.

What happens with my icky, sticky IBS is that the guts get overreactive and spastic until they get so overwhelmed that they just stop moving. So things that regularly make them move have difficulty doing anything since the guts are on strike or something (due to too much movement before). So fibre works very gradually, but nothing was consistent and non-bloating like Zelnorm (for me, because I know it doesn't help everyone).

Zelnorm affects the brain signals that help gut function, unlike typical laxatives that use fibre to push stuff through. I might try going on another antidepressant, because that helped some (it's all serotonin---but Zelnorm was better because it affected the serontonin levels in the gut specifically...I used to think it was a brain chemical, but it's also found in the intestines, which causes the brain-gut dysfunction that is the mystery of IBS).

Anyway, if I can find black market diet pills, I'm willing to bet there is hope for black market Zelnorm. I really couldn't care less about heart/ stroke worries at this point in my life. As far as my recklessly youthful opinion is concerned, I'd rather get a heart attack when I'm 50 than spend the next thirty years in hopeless discomfort.

Agh that does suck. they did the same thing with Celebrex and Vioxx both of which I took for my backpain ( it takes away inflamation ) and worked WONDERS! It was causing heart attacks as well.

I bet if you dig around enough on the net you can find something , somewhere that still sells it

People always ask me, did I ever learn anything when I was a stripper? Yeah, I did. One man plus two beers equals 20 dollars.
