    Default Moving to Chicago?

    Hey girls,
I was hopping for a little help. I might be moving to Chicago, Hoffman Estates, to be exact in the next few months. I have spent little time up there but I recently quit dancing and my new job may be giving me a promotion that will require me to go there.
I work for Sears Holding, so if you know where the Sears Corporate building is in Hoffman Estates is, that is where I will be working.
I will need to find a place and wanted to get a general idea of where I should look, what I can expect, and how much it should cost.
I am not positive about how much money I will be making so I do not really know what is in my financial budget. What I do know is that I am not going to move unless I can maintain my current standard of living, so I need to find out how much it will cost to sustain that.
I will want a nice home or apartment. I have a black lab, so it has to let me have a pet and it is almost a requirement that I have a small fenced in yard for her. It only needs to be one bedroom and I have a washer and dryer, so hookups would be great, but not necessary if not do-able.
I dont want to live far from work, but I dont want to worry about my windows getting shot out either, so if it is in an iffy area, I would rather live somewhere nice.
Like I said, I dont have to live in the best side of town, but I wont live with cockroaches, the ghetto or really bad neighborhoods.
Just somewhere quiet, comfortable, but reasonable.
I think you pretty much get the picture. I am not Richy Rich, but I am not the Beverly Hilbillies .. Lets go more for Growing Pains, Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens kind of people. lol.
    Just normal.
    What do you think?
Am I going to be able to do this?
About how much should I expect to pay for rent?
Is a yard a joke? (as in haha ... there are no yards under 3 grand a month?)
What are specifically some nice areas near the Sears Corporate building?
What are some general nice areas in Hoffman Estates?
ALl that stuff would be greatly appreciated if anyone knows. THanks a billion.

Lady, I don't know Hoffman Estates well--you should definitely Google the hell out of it; also Google Earth it---but welcome to the area!

Venus and Chicago, Thanks for the heads up.
WOW! that is WAY more than what I am used to paying. lol. I have a pretty nice home in a nice area, I pay 550. That is a 3 b, 2 bath, with huge fenced in yard, privacy fence. I cant imagine paying upwards of 1500 a month for rent. Yikes.
I guess if I do get the promotion than I will get a substantial raise as well as an adjustment for cost of living. So maybe it will even itself out. Before I accept it I am really going to have to consider how much they are offering me if my cost of living is going to go up that much though.
I will let everyone know if I get the promo, maybe you can show me around town a bit.
    Thanks a bunch, Lady

You should expect to pay $1,000/mo for rent. Hoffman Estates is out west and is off a major highway. So you will pay less than the Rolling Meadows/Schaumberg area. If you want the most bang for your buck for a place, plan on moving west of Sears. I doubt you could pay anything less than $800/mo even west of Sears. Good Luck.

What Venus said is pretty much correct. Although, you could luck out. My close friend and her hubby got a townhome in Schaumburg for about 175K. They bought it about 2 yrs ago and it was recently appraised for a little over $200K. It's a nice sized 2 bed/ 2 bath. The really expensive condos Venus mentioned are possibly new construction?? B/c the townhome my friend bought is an older home, but in a nice area.

But yeah, overall it's pretty expensive in the area. I think real estate is reasonable (reasonable compared to Schaumburg, let's say) in Elk Grove Village. Check out www.chicagotribune.com - click on "Homes" and from there you can find recent sales prices for different areas (addresses and everything) and you can also look for apartments there. You can search by ZIP code on the chicago tribune page .....some of the local ZIP codes, to try to get an idea of different areas are (this is off the top of my head, I might be off on some of these):
    Schaumburg 60173, 60193
    Elk Grove 60007
    Wood Dale 60191
    Hoffman Estates 60195
Elgin (some OK, but some pretty icky areas, so I'd advise going there during the day AND at night to make sure the area is OK for you). 60123
    Hanover Park 60133
    Bloomingdale 60108
    Itasca 60143

Edit: Naturally you could also find current sales listings. The recent sales feature is pretty helpful and interesting, IMO
