Default I've never seen this in a rental application...

Ok, I inquired online this morning on Craigslist. I found a couple of ok sounding apartments that I plan on viewing soon. I got a response back from one of the landlords and in the email he sent an attachment of the rental application so that I could look it over. Ok, while scanning through the application, something caught my eye that I found to be rather odd.

In the applicaion, there is a section:

    Please List Your References

    PLEASE LIST YOUR REFERENCES
    Banking Accounts:
Name_________________ Type of Account_________________ Account Number_________________
Name_________________ Type of Account_________________ Account Number_________________

^^^ Has anyone ever seen something like that in an application? I've never filled out an application only a lease in my apartment. Is this normal? I pulled out my real estate books but it mentioned nothing about giving your bank account info

    Um, no?

That raises some serious red flags in my book.

I've never had to do more then prove how much I make a year. And that wasn't until I moved to this area. Not for the place I'm in... but when the male and I were looking to move, most of the complexes demanded that I prove that I make a certain percentage of the monthly rent per week. Ew. But no, no one has ever asked me to see bank info like THAT. Egads.

By law, they cannot ask for this information. Do not give out your banking information. Ever. They'll have your social security number, your full name and your banking info? Bad juju.

If he wants "proof" of your account, tell him that you'll get him proof from the bank stating that you have an account there and it will not reference your account number, nor how much money you have in an account.

On those lines, I would simply write: "See attached letter"

I have seen this on rental applications, however, I will write in just my bank name, but not the account number. They can call the bank and ask if I have an account there, they dont need the account number.

I've seen it before. It sounds like the standardized format of an outdated application. Surely he's not expecting you to fill that portion out.

Just to put in perspective - you'll be giving him cheques anyway. They have all that stuff on them. You generally give a cheque with your rental application with your deposit or first and last. Like - they will HAVE the information.

^^^ Exactly. It makes no difference. I've never seen a rental application that didn't ask for that information.

Under "Name", fill in the name of the Bank.
    Under "Type", the usual (Savings/Checking).
Under "Number", fill in the bank's phone number!
    Never provide a SS number.
(And, no, that's not a "stripper sh*t" number, either!)

True, but it doesn't make much sense to give them that information when you're still in the application stage...especially if she's applying for several different apartments.

I've always had to provide my SSN when applying for an apartment so they can do a credit check.

It's not, it's pretty standard. They check your social to see if you have good credit or have any outstanding evictions, the banking info is for a check to see how many checks you've bounced etc. It's all legal.

So does this mean you are moving out of that cheap apartment, CK?

When you're applying you generally give them a cheque with your application. At least you do here.

Yes, into another. They are all cheap around here, unless I move into a loft downtown, or out to the suburbs..The one w/ that rental application asking for bank info is a 1bdrm, newly remodeled, free heat&water for $475. The other is from someplace else is $390/month.

Yes, I agree BUT this is just a rental application, not a lease. I doubt if they dont accept me they will shred up my application. They may hold it on file or something..I just dont want to run the risk. I may go ahead and call and set out to view the apt today, I'll have to see.

My suggestion would be to fill-out the entire application and then leave the section blank with your account information. Attach a note that says, "For security purposes I will be happy to complete the banking account information upon meeting in-person."

Right, right. I forgot about the credit check fee. It's been so long since I've filled out a rental ap. The last two places I rented were from private owners and they were kind enough to waive the fee. Another reason I am pro private owner rentals and anti property management.

    Where are those recipes, yo?

    Cin,

Never give this information out. It's not necessary even if allowed. Find a different place to live. You don't want them issueing you a 30day evict cause they notice your bank account doesn't live up to their standards.

    Or even looking at all.
