    Stripping and acting...

    Ok... I have a question. =P
I am probably going to go to school in August to try for a theater major. I've been thinking about stripping for a while; I could really use the money, and I think I would enjoy the job. Also, the school I want to go to is far enough away that I will definately need extra money for gas. Here's the question though: Do you all think dancing will hurt my chances at ever becoming a film actress? I keep thinking that I've never heard of a successful actress who was a stripper, only seen their movies flop... but I don't know if it's just the person or if the job is a major factor. So what do you all think?

Keep it on the down-low. It's def something that could come back to bite u in the ass later on if u become well-known. Don't tell anyone - not friends, family NO ONE. You will use a stage name, and as the other poster said dont work somewhere where u need the dancers licence.

Also I think dancing is great practice for acting.

I was a theatre major, and I think theatre and dance are areas where people are the least likely to hold anything in your lifestyle against you. The important thing is the show, and if you do a good job in the show, they will be happy with you, even if in real life you are wildly different from each other.

Case in point: a year or so ago, there was a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Kingsbury Hall at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. It starred Donny Osmond in his farewell appearance as Joseph. Donny is a prominent member of the LDS church. All the other male dancers were gay. The only other straight guy there was my buddy Jeff, who was stage manager, which is how I know about this. That's how Jeff and Donny became friends.

The show was a sellout for weeks and weeks, and nobody walked off the set because of someone else's sexual preference or religious preference.

Or consider Vanessa Williams, stripped of the Miss America title for appearing in a girl-girl photo layout in Penthouse. She parlayed that notoriety into a fairly successful film career.

So, it seems to me that having been an exotic dancer would not work against you in an acting career. Now, if you think you might teach high school or junior high school drama for a day job, that might be a different story.

I went to school for theater (undergrad). Look, to be perfectly honest, if you are serious about a career in acting, then you should be more concerned about being a working actor. By that I mean an actor that works regularly, be it in film, television, theater, commercials, whatever. Your chances of making it big are so slim, you shouldn't base immediate decisions on that.

However, dancing will help you with facing casting calls and auditions. The more you deal with rejection on a regular basis, the better equipped you will be to handle it in a career in the performing arts. And dealing with rejection is a basic part of working as an actor.

have you auditioned for any schools yet? Getting into a good acting program, a conservatory program, is harder than getting into Harvard. Top programs like Ithaca, Carnagie Mellon, BU, DePaul, and obviously Julliard, etc, will audition upwards of 1000 kids a year for 20-30 spots in the freshman class. And then you have mandatory cuts after sophmore year in any good conservatory program. (In a conservatory you get a BFA instead of a BA). Bigger programs like NYU have better odds, but not good odds by far.

The school I'm going to go to is just a regular school... it has a good theater program though. I really don't know how to begin trying to act... the area I live in is nowhere near any place where they would be casting for movies, so I'm just trying to go to school and at least get some training. Also I'm probably going on government money, I probably couldn't afford a school geared toward performing or any kind of expensive big-name school yet. That's another reason I need the money from dancing.

I know my chances of being a big actress are slim, but I also know that I won't be happy with any other job but performing... acting, singing, or dancing. I think I could end up stripping as a main job if I like it enough... but then my family might start to wonder where the money is coming from, and my parents and their families are not the sort who would take to the truth kindly.

I just like to entertain, and I want a successful life, like everyone I guess. But here I am rambling... hope I don't sound like a loon.

well ya know what ya gotta do to make it. The question becomes LA or NY?

edit: not saying thats even a guarentee. But without living in one of those cities it seems hard, if not impossible to make it. And keep in mind dancing in LA blows.

No. Dancing will not hurt your chances at being a successful actress. It could actually help you.

I am an actress too. Dancing is great because you can support yourself financially and you also have the flexiblity to go on auditions, gigs, etc. Every day you dance you are either acting or entertaining, so it is great practice for when you are in between gigs.

As a dancer, you will learn how to effectively deal with rejection. As an actress, you will also be dealing with rejection too. Dancing helps toughen your skin. That guy doesn't want a dance? That director didn't want me?? Whatever-on to the next.

Dancing has given me the confidence to pursue gigs I otherwise would not have pursued before. My last film role was as a stripper. I would not have had the confidence to pursue that role had I not been a stripper already. (And no I do not do porn-nothing against it, but it is just not my thing.) The more things you know how to do , the better.

Dancing also exposes you to all kinds of people from all walks of life. As an actress, you need this. Observe how the attorney behaves. Observe Mr. CEO's mannerisms. Be a good listener. These people will serve as great inspirations to you. You need to have a great sense of humor too. Dancing will help develop this.

Stripping is also great training for how to conduct yourself in the entertainment industry. You learn how to handle yourself and other entertainers.

You DO, however, should you become famous, need the strength to NOT CARE WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU WHEN THEY FIND OUT YOU WERE A STRIPPER. Yes you can use a stage name and alter your appearance, but somehow these things do tend to surface and you really need to not give a shit what others think. You have to know who you are and be secure in your own skin, because in the spotlight people are going to be judging you left and right.

I think if a film flops it is due not only to bad acting, but also to bad writing and bad directing. You have to make good choices when it comes to choosing projects. I think being a dancer has very little to do with whether or not a film flops. You can be an ex-dancer and still get good gigs, depending on your talent, agent, luck, etc. So many factors come into play.

As far as being taken seriously as an actress/ex dancer...how good is your talent? What can you bring to the table? Do you have something truly unique that nobody else can offer? What is it? How educated and prepared are you to deal with what you will be dealing with in the industry? Do you have a good intuition? If you have a unique look, are talented, a good intuition and have something special to bring to the table, there is no reason why you could not flourish and be respected as an actress after being a dancer.

Go with your dreams, girl. You have them for a reason.

Oh and one more thing-make sure you treat every person you come across with love and respect. Good karma is important to have when pursuing your dreams.
