    Thumbs down Grindhouse

Just saw a pre-screening of the new Rodriguez/Tarantino double feature Grindhouse. I spent the first half fervently wishing I'd stayed home, but I'm okay with having gone in the end, just because I would've wanted to see it without knowing any better.

It opens with a terrifically funny trailer, then goes into Rodriguez's painfully horrible zombie flick "Planet Terror." If you liked Peter Jackson's Dead Alive, and if you laughed at the pudding scene, then you will like this movie. If, like me, you are disgusted and turned off by really disgusting infectious diseases, pulsating pustules, and profuse vomiting, then you will not enjoy it. I walked out on it twice for a few minutes each time just to take a break or when I sensed something really revolting was coming up.

The one good part of "Planet Terror" was Rose McGowan. She's sexy, badass, funny, and well-written. The movie opens with some really sexy go-go dancing by her, and she kicks major ass as a very Rodriguez heroine. If the movie could've spent more time on her character, it would've been better. But I really didn't like it, overall.

When it FINALLY ended, there were several more mock-trailers. A couple were funny, the rest were not. Rob Zombie's was pretty good. K liked one that I found disgusting, so again, you may like it more if you enjoyed Dead Alive, which I believe Rodriguez must have watched several times before engaging in this project.

So after the trailers, it goes into the Tarantino movie, "Death Proof." After the Rodriguez yuck-fest, I was ready to go hang out in the lobby until everyone else was ready to go; typically I like Rodriguez's style better than Tarantino's nowadays, and I figured if Rodriguez was that gross then Tarantino would be worse. But K reminded me that Tarantino would be more into dialogue than gore, and he turned out to be right. "Death Proof" starts out really slow but gets much better. There is one very long, VERY intense action sequence that is everything a nail-biting action sequence ought to be. The character, a stunt performer playing herself, shows great acting chops while doing her own really intense stunts. By the end of the movie, the audience was cheering. Of course it's mainly Tarantino masturbating to his favorite old movies, which is pretty much all he does these days, but I found it entertaining and it took the bad taste of "Planet Terror" out of my mouth.

It was not, however, worth the price of a movie ticket in my opinion, and it DAMN sure wasn't worth sitting through "Planet Terror" for. So overall, I'm not recommending Grindhouse, unless you are one of the people who laughed through Dead Alive and The Hills Have Eyes. If you didn't like those movies, then you'll hate this one.

And if you're a Rodriguez/Tarantino fan, as I generally am, you still probably won't like it.

    Thumbs down from me.

yep, she has seen more horror/gorefests than i have and understands it's all fake. One of my best friends is a special effects guy and another does horror makeup, both of them do haunted houses every year and use my girls as test dummies.Stage blood and scars and shit are staples in my house
If my girls didn't grow up surrounded by theatrical people...I might worry about the effect a scarey movie would have on them, but since they have been around it since birth..I'm not too worried.
My girls are insisting that we go to the big horrorcon out here this helloween to see some of their favorite killers, I've already told them it depends on how good their grades are.

It's not the gore... I dunno, I got dragged to that movie when it first came out and I'm still having nightmares about it. I found it extremely traumatic, and I work in the industry so believe me, I know it's fake! I'm surprised to hear that a nine-year-old girl can handle such brutal, graphic, and disturbing rape scenes but they're your kids.

I loved Dead Alive, so it looks like I'll be seeing this one. Rose was on some talk show the other day and her face looks funky, like she'd had a bunch of work done or something. Any movie where the heroine has a machine gun for a leg is A-OK with me.

I saw the original Hills Have Eyes when I was pretty young too- some kids can handle it, others cannot.

Anyway I'm so psyched to see these movies...I can't wait. I hate living in a city that doesn't have advanced screeniings BOO!

Same here. I was the "uh-oh" chld, so my brothers are a lot older than me. I got to watch a lot of stuff I wouldn't normally have watched as a kid.

As for Dead Alive, I love that damn movie. Cheesy zombie flicks are my favorite kind of movie. I'm really looking forward to seeing Grindhouse.

I'd still see it if I were you.

It sounds as though she's a bit predestined to not like films of this genre, so her not liking it really isn't all that surprising.

I go with my gut on movies and on this one it looks to be interesting. Gore doesn't bother me so that isn't an issue.

Humph now I wonder if I'll like it. Im a huge gore/horror fanatic. Fangoria conventions anyone? However, badly done horror movies I'll watch but refuse to pay like 15 bucks to see.

Hills have eyes, well my 12 year old saw it and liked it. I know the og when it came out fucked me up..it was the rape scene

I gotta go see grindhouse though, ... if anything...just because.

    Me too.

Anyways, back to this movie. I generally enjoy Tarantino movies, but I want nothing to do with this crap. Of course, I'll be dragged to it anyways b/c my bf can't wait for this movie, but I kinda felt it would be exactly as you described it. I could just tell once I read up about it and saw the previews. It just has a crappy vibe, IMO.

I like cheesy B-movies, I just don't like yuck-fests. The more I think about it, the more I really liked "Death Proof." I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more if it didn't come at the end of "Planet Terror" and that endless parade of ick. But the first trailer for "Machete" was hilarious, and Rose McGowan was badass, and the trailer for Rob Zombies "Werewolf Women of the SS" was hysterical, and "Death Proof" was overall pretty good.

If they released "Death Proof" by itself, I'd recommend it. It's fun. But "Planet Terror"... ugh. Just ugh. It had some great moments but I really did not need to be subjected to the gross-out mess.

I just saw it and I freakin loved it. Rodriguez's movie was my fav. Yeah there were a couple scenes that made me slightly nauseous, but his movie was done in such a cheesy, funny way that the violence was not offensive. I hated, hated the Hills Have Eyes. I found it disturbing and was actually offended that my sister recommended it to me. Planet Terror was not like that. The bodies fall apart like jello molds, so its all more like one big joke. All in good fun and entertainment, cheesy one-liners and all. There were, however, a couple scenes where its taken a little over the line but I'm not going to spoil it.

The second movie started out a little slow, lots of dialogue. By the end, the audience is laughing and cheering. You just know this is another cult-classic. BUT, if you've ever had a loved-one get hurt in a car accident, you may want to turn away for a few graphic scenes.

I give both movies a thumbs-up. Expect to be shocked, expect lots of gore and a huge gross factor, expect totally cheesy comedy. Just go to be entertained and you won't be disappointed.

Saw it last night! And first of all, I am in absolute LUST with Zoe, the stuntwoman Yekhefah mentioned. Holy SHIT. Just amazing. I found "Death Proof" much more enjoyable than "Planet Terror" as well, though I didn't hate that as much as Yekhefah did, just not as entertained by popping pus bubbles as some folks.

I'm not generally a zombie flick person, though I respected "28 Days", and honestly, "Shaun of the Dead" is one of my most-loved films ever. I agree completely with Yekhefah that Rose McGowan was the best part of it by a long shot. (Freaky thing, though - ROSE's character's stage name is Cherry. My primary stage name is still Rose, but my other one, for one of my clubs, is . . . Cherry. Just a little freaky there. Anywho . . . )

I had a thought specific to what Yek sez below:

Now, I actually think that there was some relationship between the two films, not plot-wise (or cameo-wise), and it's all about the expectations the two directors had established and the accompanying tension that results. You may not agree with this thought, but think about this.

MINOR SPOILERS AHOY, though I'll try to be as vague as possible. I'll also try putting it in white spoiler font, so highlight the below if you've seen it or want plot points revealed.

By the time we're focusing on the Ship's Mast game, SO MUCH unbelievable gore and disgusting, MERCILESS violence has transpired in both movies - moreso in Planet Terror of course, but Tarantino was also unflinching in showing us the results of the first crash - that when Zoe (drool, pant) is up on top of the car and Kurt Russell appears, I just braced myself for the worst possible outcome, shown in the cruelest detail.

The TENSION that was created by that expectation made the car chase one of if not THE most intense 'chase' scene I've ever watched, knowing that the heroines were not at all guaranteed to be safe in any way. So that, for me, made the exhilaration of their success - and revenge - all the more satisfying.

So, if you look at it that way, maybe the "endless parade of ick", disgusting as it was, served a cathartic purpose - on purpose.

Enough on the spoilers. I can also say that the 'preview' for "Don't!" made me giggle. I do believe that was by the creator of "Shaun of the Dead". So I'm biased.

I saw it early friday. Gotta say it was GREAT. I can understand why some wont like planet terror as its really gross at times. However it was done in such a way all you could do is laugh. Then Death proof came up. I was so bored for the first bit of it but DAMN did it ever make it worth it. I plan to see grindhouse in the theatre another couple times as friends that havent seen it yet want to.

Being a fan of crappy B movies, I'm gonna have to go see this one. In fact, I may opt to pay full price and see it on as late a showing as possible. Fare like this just shouldn't be watched during the matinee.

Ahh....I just checked moviefone. This kick arse movie theatre in Wichita that has its own adult-only premium seating area with its own full service bar has a 10:15 showing. Our cruddy mall theatre has an 11:00 showing. I think I've just made plans for Tuesday night.
