Default Charities that are not "real" charities

So while going over my tax stuff, I realized I hadn't gotten a receipt from Greenpeace for the donations I made last year. I contacted them, and was told "blah blah blah, thanks for the support, but Greenpeace is not an officially recognized charity in Canada at this time". I said "oh".

That's cool with me, I'd still have given to them because I think they are a very worthwhile cause. But I was just wondering where I can look to find this stuff out in future? Oxfam and Unicef seemed like they would obviously count, and they do of course, but Greenpeace seemed like it would count too...I guess it's too political or something?

Where is the list that tells me who qualifies? I'm a little dumb with this stuff.

All registered charities (in Canada) have a charitable registration number...you can request it, but most have it plainly listed. It looks like #123456789N1234

Surprising about Greenpeace. I don't know what to say about that. Did you donate to Greenpeace USA? That could be it...we can't deduct donations to non-Canadian charities.

You're getting a receipt from me, btw...it's for the ED4C donation, but the receipt is from a different org. It's all legal and stuff...just in case you get a random receipt and are like "huh?". It's for 2007 tax year.

    ETA:

    "Greenpeace Canada

    Registration Number: 0819243-23
    Business Number: 124207341RR0001
Name/Address: GREENPEACE CANADA CHARITABLE FOUNDATION, TORONTO, ONT."

"After two previous rejections by Revenue Canada, Greenpeace Canada has given up its latest appeal for charitable status as the Greenpeace Environmental Foundation. The original Greenpeace organization, founded in 1976, had its charitable status revoked in 1989 on the grounds that it didn't meet the appropriate "public benefit" definitions of a charity.

Following the revocation, organizers formed the Greenpeace Canada Charitable Foundation, which primarily raised funds for Greenpeace. Revenue Canada revoked the charitable status of this second organization in 1995. An appeal of that revocation was dismissed last year but, in the meantime, organizers had created the Greenpeace Environmental Foundation and applied for charitable status once again. Revenue Canada refused to grant the new organization a charitable number. Greenpeace appealed the decision, but withdrew the challenge last week."

Here is a link to see what charities are recognized by the Canadian Government. It also gives you those that are newly registered and recently revoked. I'm with you that I give regardless of tax advantage, but it's good to have the information when making further decisions.
