Default where hsould I keep cash?

    Hi there-

I tried to do a search on this but didnt find anything.

I'm trying to figure out were to put my cash to make sure its safe. Yes, I have thought about getting a safety deposit box but ive heard some horror stories about getting robbed, etc if anyone knows you have a safe in the house. I'd rather not put all my money in the bank for the obvious reasons, or keep em stuffed in some shoebox in my closet, etc. Do you gals have any advice for me??

What are the obvious reasons for not wanting to use a bank? As long as your bank is a member of FDIC, you're money is insured up to $100,000. (You live in the States, right?). And if you've got more than that, you could split your money up into multiple accounts.
As far as a stashing place in the home, I would think a safe is the best way to go. If you're scared of being robbed, a safe would probably be better than the traditional taping-a-wad-of-cash-to-the-back-of-the-toilet .. ya know?! Unless it's super-secret and no would-be burglars know about it. Or maybe you could get one of those hollowed-out books and keep it on your bookshelf. Like this:

    Anyways, good luck!

personally I have two safes at home. One is a $60 el-cheapo Wal-Mart special floor safe that is in relatively plain view in my bedroom in which I keep a couple of hundred bucks. The other is a professional style wall safe which I installed myself in a very 'out of the ordinary' location, in which any serious cash / valuables are kept.

I did this on the theory that there are always going to be 'desparate' people who may try to rob me. This could be some random burglar / robber choosing my house for no particular reason, but it could also be some former club customer or nosey neighbor or distant relative who knows that I have a fairly substantial income. By providing the el-cheapo WalMart safe in my bedroom with the 'throw away' $200 as an 'obvious target', as well as a 'time waster', it cuts the odds WAY down that any would-be burglar / robber is going to A. figure out that there might be a second safe, and B. stick around long enough to locate it and crack it.

But the ultimate security of the second safe is not really due to the features of the safe itself ... but instead to the secrecy of it's installation / location. NEVER hire anyone or ask any friend/relative to help you install your 'real' safe !!!!!!!!!!

In fact, I don't even recommend buying your 'real' safe from any local store - on the off chance that some store employee will recognize you or 'remember' the name on your check / credit card. I got my 'real' safe from

As far as keeping all of your money in banks go, obviously two factors come into play. Accessing any serious amount of money in a bank account requires A. that technology is working right and B. that it be done during business hours. Anybody who was involved in last year's NYC blackout can tell you that Cash is King. Also anybody who has been (bogusly) busted and needs $1000 for bail money on a saturday night will also tell you that Cash is King.

Besides the cash issue, there is also a need to store important documents and items ( house deed, car title, passport, gold bars etc.) somewhere safe. Obviously there is the option of a bank safety deposit box. However these are subject to inspection by bank officials and the IRS on top of the business hours access limitation.

In regard to the 'diversion' safes, before I got my 'real' safe I used one of these - and still do when I travel on the road. It's the modern version of the hollowed-out book ...

thanks! the wall safe sounds like a good idea- but where would I get my hands on one of those?
well as I already posted, I bought mine online at with the electronic keypad option. This particular safe was one of the least expensive fire rated wall safes, and is specifically designed to install between standard 2x4 wall studs with a saber saw and an electric drill and four wood lag bolts (it took me maybe an hour). Actually the hardest part of the whole installation was lifting that little SOB and sliding it into position in the cutout (hint hint mine isn't actually installed in a wall ).

there's also which is another relatively affordable fire rated wall safe, and a shitload of more expensive ones like and

The non-fire rated wall safes are obviously a lot less expensive than the fire rated ones, but hey for an extra $100-$200 bucks I wanted the added comfort of knowing that my important documents wouldn't immediately go up in smoke inside my one hour fire rated wall safe if my house were ever to catch fire.

I think this is invaulable information
Where dancers are concerned at least, any safe that we can afford to buy and manage to install ourselves is going to be easy prey to a burglar with a crowbar / recipro saw, who can simply rip out the wall along with the safe (once he finds it) and take it with him to crack open later. Thus the real security comes from trying to make sure that nobody knows that the safe exists, and if somebody does have reasonable basis to believe that a safe exists not knowing exactly where it's located. Friends and family members are obviously going to know that a girl is a dancer, and draw the conclusion that she might be in possession of large amounts of cash. Likewise, contractors are going to know for a fact that the girl has money plus know exactly where her safe is located (since they installed it for [email protected]!)

One of the funniest but saddest stories I ever heard re dancers and safes was one upscale girl in NY who bought one of the highest security most expensive home safes available and then had it professionally installed complete with concrete and steel re-bar so that nobody could simply rip it out. However, one of the contractors involved in the professional safe installation quickly concluded that this girl had MONEY. About a month after performing the installation, this guy paid the girl a visit and forced her under threat of violence to open the safe and hand over the cash (which was like over 10 grand). The guy had guessed correctly that the girl wasn't coming clean with her income taxes, and as a result the girl didn't dare report the robbery for fear that the police report and resulting investigation might result in her owing far more money to the IRS than the 10k the contractor ripped off !

This incident was what prompted me to invest in the el-cheapo WalMart safe and keep a 'throw-away' $200 in it. If someone ever does attempt to rob me under threat of violence, I can put up some token resistance and then comply with the burglar's direction to open up the el-cheapo safe in my bedroom. If he complains about there only being $200 in the safe, well I just made a bank deposit / just came back from a holiday / whatever. With $200 in hand and the satisfaction that he has successfully forced little ol me to open up my safe and give him 'all' of my cash, the odds of him suspecting the existance of a second safe with lots more cash in it let alone sticking around even longer in order to search for a second safe are extremely remote.

Same situation applies to a burglar, who is going to quickly find my el-cheapo bedroom safe and waste time cracking it open to get at the 'throw away' $200 without giving any thought or spending additional time searching for a second safe with lots more cash in it. Basic psychology ... robbers and burglars are expecting to find a safe with cash in it, so I provide one for them to find rather easily to meet their expectation !

Also if I am ever robbed or burglarized, if need be (for insurance coverage of breaking and entering damage, for example) I can make a police report that $200 was taken from my el-cheapo bedroom safe without raising any eyebrows - after all I just made a bank deposit / just came back from a holiday / whatever !

^^^ I love it ! Also, any burglar is far less likely to accidentally abscond with what appears to be just a stuffed toy than with what appears to be just a bottle of water / soda (i.e. taking it just because he is thirsty !).

^^^ Actually, if I were a robber (which I'm not), I would definitely suspect the teddy bear. Way too many old stories about valuables being hidden in stuffed toys... Not to mention I had a crazy uncle who used to keep his gun in a teddy bear on the guest room bed... (creepy!)

Maybe if there is just one it would be suspect but not if it was in a collection.

Like Melonie I have a fake and real one. My disposable one is in an obvious piggy bank and my real one is actually in a reflective hall-of-mirrors type safe. Don't worry, even mentioning it on here, nobody can find it. We used tricks of reflection and glass to hide it. You don't even know you could be looking straight at it. Hell... I didn't know it existed for six months in my own home!

Where might I find very, very small fire proof containers? The smallest ones I can find are the size of a large purse and not easy to hide.

    This is too big:

I am unable to make daily deposits. At times, my cash reservoir is overflowing. I'd hate to have it go up in flames as well as being stolen before it finds safety in my bank account.

^^^ basically, if you want a 1 hour fire rating, that's as small as it gets. The reason of course is that most people that would seek to buy a fireproof case want to put important documents inside ... and those documents typically measure 8.5 by 11 inches. The fire rating requires that the 'walls' all be about an inch thick in order to fit in the required insulation to achieve the fire rating, so you wind up with something like the Sentry case as a minimum, measuring 11 by 14 inches or so.

Basically, the smallest and least expensive fire rated safes aren't much deeper or wider than the fireproof case, but they are a bit taller. At least with a wall safe, it can be bolted to the 2 x 4 wall studs thus forcing a burglar to have thought about bringing a recipro saw or crowbar in his bag of burglar tools in order to cut the wall section to make off with a wall safe. And even after the wall safe has been ripped out of the wall, it's still going to slow a burglar down because of its 80+ pound weight. On the other hand, the document case you have shown weighs only 15 pounds or so and isn't anchored down, making it easy for a burglar to simply carry off.

There are also variants of the fire rated safe available for apartment renters etc. who are not allowed to cut into walls. This one is very small (12h x 16w x 14d), but still weighs 70 pounds, and bolts through the bottom onto something solid beneath it ... meaning that it can be installed inside a kitchen or bathroom cabinet, inside a freezer or a piece of furniture, or in a bunch of other out-of-the-way places.

Don't keep all your cash in a safe like the one pictured in StrayStripper's post, unless you have a really good hiding place for it. I had a safe like that before and it got stolen and I stupidly had 3 grand in it. I should've just put the money in my bank account. Those safes are not hard for thieves to pry open either. I like the hollow book or fake water bottle ideas. To me, a safe just announces that there are valuables in it.

This is absolutely true. This is also the reason that LillithMorrigan and I both have TWO safes, with the first being a 'throw-away' with very little money kept in it that is provided for the specific purpose of allowing a burglar to steal it / crack it open and then leave - without bothering to suspect the existance of, let alone search for, a well hidden second safe containing the 'real' valuables.

Works real well until someone tries to use it or borrow it and then realize it's fake. Happened with my Lysol one I had... :/ But it's still the best for travelling.

    OK Melonie,

But curiosity got the better of me, I went to google and put in:

Money Dancer OR Stripper "Wall Safe"

    Guess what?

Hit number 304 lead to a series of post in which you state :

    1) you have an el-cheapo WallMart special in my bedroom to serve as a distraction
    2) You have a high quality bolt-in recessed wall safe located in the last place any body would think about looking
    3) You usually keep at least $3000 typically $5000 in small bills cash ( absolutely no $100 bills, and preferably no $50's either! )

    Isn't the internet wonderful?

They have ones that actually work. I know someone with a shaving cream one. It has a little compartment in it with actual shaving cream, just in case.

^^^ Jon you're absolutely right. However, anybody attempting to act on that information would have to determine who 'Melonie' is and where she actually lives, and then actually locate my second safe ! Anybody who is willing to invest that much effort into a $5000 robbery attempt would be far better off hitting a more upscale neighborhood at random! Also, anybody who bothers to to this sort of net research would also probably find info on my gun 'collection' and my 'trigger happy' neighbors !

^ Exactly, even posting it on here that it's an illusory safe, someone would be punching every window/mirror in my house and probably still not find it.

She never said where said safe was... just that it was a strange spot. For some reason, on a wall near her toilet came to my mind... but hey, I can imagine.
