    Default Santa Fe, NM?

So, I live in Chicago right now but really want to move when my lease runs out in Feb.
One of the areas I'm really drawn to is Santa Fe, NM. I have been there and I LOVED it. It's so beautiful, and they're's just such a good vibe there.

I'm curious about rent prices and the area in general. I would really love to live in a smaller, more laid back city. Chicago is just too chaotic for me. And New Mexico just feels right to me for some reason. I get excited when I think about moving there.

Does anybody currently live there, or has lived there before? If so what's your opinion on living there, the culture, ect? I really want to be somehwere beautiful and it seems like it would be an affordable and cool city to live in.

I'll probably take a trip to NM sometime in the fall to check everything out more and make sure my gut feeling is leading me in the right direction. I don't want to move to the wrong city again....I've made that mistake way too many times in the past 4 years.

If anybody has any info, or advice whatsoever please do let me know
    Thanks...

My advice is to let your lease run out, and move in with us to be our sexual plaything.
In all seriousness...I didnt get to see much of santa fe as we drove thru but it seemed nicer than some parts of N.M. we got to see.

Thanks so much, Venus. I was in Taos 2 years ago for a day, and I was blown away...that place is so, so beautiful.
I imagine it's pretty expensive to live there, but Santa Fe is close enough that I would be able to visit there easily.

Taos is one of the major power spot's in the US, right? I felt such a positive powerful energy while I was there. The gorge bridge was breathtaking. If I could move there right now I would. But I promised myself I wouldn't be so impulsive about moving this time around.

Do you know if there is any form of public transport at all there?
If not I guess I'll have to get a car. Not a good thing since I hate driving, but I have gotten to the point where I loathe public transportation so much..at least in Chicago...The L is so dirty. I feel disgusting everytime I ride on it.

I really want to be someplace where I'm surrounded by mountains, culture, sunshine, and all that good stuff. And since I really can't afford Big Sur, or San Fran, which are my 2 other favorite places ever, NM seems like the next best place. I just feel like it would be a better place for me emotionally than here in Chicago...more peaceful, and more on my wave length.

I have bad social anxiety and Chicago is NOT a good place to have that whatsoever. This city's making my head spin..everyone and everything is so frantic all the time.
Besides, I can't take the winters here.

Anyhow, Thanks for the info. Do you recommend looking at Craigslist or is there a better website for rentals that you know of?

I mean just look at the natural beauty...is the sky always that blue? I seriously haven't seen the sky looking that blue the whole time I've lived in Chicago.

Mag, the winter here (still clutching us around the throat in mid April!) is making everyone mental.

You have a good plan there. Get thee to the warm and geologically majestic Southwest and never look back!

So the weather is the cause of all the completly insane people in this city??!!

Maybe the cold causes some sort of insainity?
    I'm serious.

I have never seen so many crazy homeless crackheads running around all pissed off and screaming at imaginary people.
At least in san Francisco the homeles people were amusing and harmless. But here they're seriously scary. And they're is SO much crime in this city. Some seriously sick shit has happened here. Whenever I watch the news there's another horribly twisted story about someone torturing their child to death, or chopping someone to pieces.

Then there was the slasher guy who was running around the neighborhood, my street actually, a few weeks ago, slashing people with knives if they looked at him because he thought they were 'out to get him'. That scared me and now I am totally freaked out to go out at night alone even though they caught him. This city has some fucked up people.....

I live in Santa Fe! I love it here. The sky isn't always that blue, maybe just 350 days out of the year. Santa Fe is great because it's both cosmopolitan and earthy. It's equal parts Hispanic, Native American, and Anglo, so the cultural mix is awesome, there's always some sort of fiesta going on. There's a lot of art, coffee shops, yoga, great food. The film industry is exploding right now in NM. The drawback is that it's expensive to live here.

It would be tough to live in NM without a car. You could get a place near the plaza so you could walk everywhere but that location would be much more expensive. There's bus service but it's sparse. There's a strip club here but it's not the greatest so I commute to Albuquerque twice a week to dance.

I moved here from the East Coast 13 years ago. I've left twice but both times I've come back. I grew up in Vermont so I completely understand the never ending winters. I really love it here, let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you so, so much for all the info, shakti!

Yes, I figured that the car situation would be pretty important but I'm planning on getting that one taken care of.

My main concern would be the approx. price range of say, at least a 1 bedroom. Right now we pay about $800 a month plus utilities, cable, etc. it comes out to be at least $1200-$1300 for everything a month. I'm not expecting Santa Fe to be super cheap. Maybe something around $700 a month in a pretty good area. I'm not looking to be in any ritzy kind of area, I like my beautiful art culture communities a lot. I'm not too picky when it comes to areas, but I don't want to be out in the middle of nowhere. I think you get my balanced requests, haha.

Are there certain areas that you recommend we check out? What are the one's to stay away from? If there's anything else I need to know feel free to tell me. Thank you again for the info. I can't wait to really start looking around seriously.

Randomly enough, I was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and have been back to visit all my life as my family lives there. Carlsbad, of course, is much like most of New Mexico - not all that attractive, and you're lucky to find a blade of grass.... New Mexico definitely has that slow, laid back thing going on, and the times I made it up to Sante Fe I thought it was gorgeous. Just my .02

I've lived in albuquerque for a few years. Santa fe is a little different though. Moving to the southwest, you'll probably love it or hate it. Its more laid back though.. If you like nature, it might be your thing.

I think the best thing would be to come to Santa Fe, stay a week, and just drive around looking at neighborhoods and getting a feel for things. I can't think of any area that's bad in terms of dangerous, but there are some uglier vs. prettier, and of course more expensive areas.

You could probably find a one bedroom apt. for $700. You could also possibly find a casita, which would be nicer, but more expensive. But definitely visit first, I think a lot of people do either love or hate the Southwest, some people don't get the adobe house aesthetic, while others love it. It's more laid back here than most other areas of the country, and that's hard for some people, perfect for others.

I went to the dances at San Ildefonso pueblo on Easter Sunday, it was so beautiful and reminded me why I love it here.
