This chart is a scaled overlay of the current stock market versus the 1987 stock market vs the 1929 stock market.
If past trends hold true this time around, after one more upward pop in the next 1-2 weeks it's 'look out below' !

Interesting. My skeptic alarm is going off a little, though. What's to say there haven't been any other 8 month periods that followed a similar upward trend without such a dramatic drop afterward?

^^^ undoubtedly there have been previous 8 month periods of upward trend in the past. It is the rate of the upward trend towards a 'peak', a rapid pullback, a second 'echo peak' and ensuing fall off a cliff that need to be watched out for.
I feel dumb but...it's April, not September. The 'current' market is tracked to the end of September in that chart.
What am I missing?

^^^ the time shift. The chartmaker is pointing out that the current conditions of January through April 2007 correspond to the historical conditions of June through September 1929. We all remember what happened in October 1929, and the chartmaker is attempting to draw a conclusion that the same thing could happen in May 2007.
