Default chi iron = burnt hair smell?? :((

ok i use a chi iron to straighten my hair.
i use kms or redken or euphora products that smell GOOD. EXCEPT when i turn my iron on, it smells like..burnt hair or something. and then after i am done my hair, MY HAIR smells like burnt hair!! my iron does not smell like that when it is cold. and i clean it with alcohol, like the instructions allow.

does anyone else have this problem?? what can i do?

I was at ULTA today and they had some cleaner for flat irons. Product can get built up on flat irons and when it is old and hot, it stinks. I know you don't have ULTA in Canada, but maybe you could find it online.

Ceramic irons actually wear off after a while. Maybe that's happening and scorching your hair.

Seriously, get a Sedu or a Solia.

Use the Chi hair products. They smell FANTASTIC, and they don't give your hair or appliance the burnt hair smell.

clean the flat iron. I clean all my hot tools once a week, otherwise gunk gets too built up

What exactly do you use to clean your straightener? What's the product name?

I just went back to Ulta and bought the cleaner. It is by Hot Tools and is called "Styling Iron Cleaner". You can use it on flat irons, curling irons, etc. I imagine you can buy it anywhere they sell Hot Tools brand hair appliances.

It's available at Folica.com as well. Since you're getting free shipping anyway, and the order might be delayed, maybe you can add this to your order.

    Ingredients:
Water, D-Glucose, Octyl Ethers-Oligomeric, D-Glucopyranoside, C10-16 Alkyloligomeric, PPG-2 Methyl Ether, Butoxydiglycol, C9-11 Pareth-11, Isopropyl Alcohol, Sodium Metasilicate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Fragrance.

At first I thought that I might as well clean my iron with alcohol, as it's a good solvent for gunk, but maybe I will look into this cleaner.

Hmmm good idea... I'll see if I can tomorrow

Although I have no clue what half those ingredients are... seems alcohol would be effective enough... maybe mixed with water so as not to damage the plates?
