    Default Dancing Mothers

    Hey Ladies,
I'm a former dancer and I raised my son (alone) while I worked. Now I'm doing my MA in Social Research and I want to talk to women who are working as dancers and raising their children. I want to expose some of the complexities of this lived experience. It was a lonely journey for me, even though there are many women who work as dancers to support their families...
Thanks! I didn't know where else to post this request

    Okay, here's a question...
Why have you chosen to work as a dancer while you are mothering your kids?

I have 5 kids and happily married. They are 11,9,7,6, and 4.

I started dancing on a dare and I guess I was bitten by the bug. Its not as stressful as the management job I used to have. I make better money and their college is nearly paid for. My mother raised us (I'm the oldest of 7) on welfare and I refused to raise mine the same way. I didn't want to worry about putting food on the table or what bill was more important that week.

No problem about the name Un (-:

    Now to the question:
I had wanted to strip for a long time before I ever did. It wasnt specificaly something I picked because I had a child. I decided to try because the oportunity finally came up. It was certainly very suitable to parentlng being able to pick my shifts and work nights and part time / casually though! It meant I could sleep during the day when my son was at school and be home if need be. I totally LOVE my work and have no plans on stopping anytime soon.

I have 2 daughters, 14 & 16. I was a single mother for almost 8 years. I am currently, happily married for almost 3 years now.

I originally started dancing because I had to...I needed the money to support my family. I continued dancing since it allowed me the option of working when I chose to! I performed feature stage shows only, not private dances. This allowed me to essentially work 72 minutes a day, at 18 minute intervals...and the rest of the time was for my kids! It allowed me to save for their, and my future...rather quickly too, since I was well aware that this is a short timeline job.

I did work away from home at times...as a feature I travelled, so I had a personal nanny for my girls for the one week a month I was away.

I have a 6 year old son, married to his daddy.

I danced and worked in related businesses when I was single. I took time off to be with my son when he was little. When the time came to go back to work, there was nothing I really wanted to do, and dancing was flexible and lucrative.

I dont make a ton of money, but I pick my own hours and I can take time off whenever my family needs me.

    Hey Ladies~~
Sorry I haven't emailed you sooner. I've been spiraling...school is a very strange place! I would love to know if and how you feel stripping and living the persona of a stripper (if you feel that way) has influenced your relationship with your child(ren).have you always danced while raising him or her. does your child(ren) know what you are doing for work?
How has dancing complicated your experience and your identity as a "mother".

I have lots more to ask...Thank you all so very very much...
    Bye for now,

I have two kids (8 and 3) and I started dancing the day I turned 18. I have taken time off to have my kids and have had a few 'white collar jobs'.

I dont change my personality TOO much while I am at work. I tend to be a bit more reasonable with guys being jerks than I do in my real life, but I am still me. I dont have to try to change back to my normal self after work before my kids get up. They know I work in a bar. That is all. They are to young to even understand what I do.

The only complicated part about dancing while having children to me is that I work in another state. Always have, could never work in my home state (its very close knit) and they go to their dads house while I am at work, usually only 2 days maybe 3.

    Hope any of that helps.
