    My New Fish, Pinot!

I've been wanting a betta for awhile, and we had a big vase that was perfect for one. Today K and I passed an aquarium store and we decided to stop in and check out the betta situation... and we got one! We got some natural polished rocks and a nice live plant for him, and of course the fish himself. He's kind of a wine-red color so we named him Pinot, and he's beautiful!

He has quite the personality, too. He's very active, plays in the plant and swims around and stuff. He seems to like me; whenever I go near his vase, he swims up to see me!

I LOVE this fish and I'm so excited! I've wanted a betta forever!

Pinot... better than calling him Sushi, hehe. Remember, white wine goes with fish.

That kinda looks like my moms betta. Mine is a little more purpley/blue. They each have their own vase with rocks in the bottom and a plant on top. My mom accidently killed my first one because she was cleaning out the vase and instead of putting my fishy into the water she put it in the bleach or whatever it was. I'm pretty sure he went quick.

Actually I almost called him Sushi! But K talked me out of it. He wanted to name him Siena after our favorite wine, but I liked Pinot better. And no, I won't put any other fish in that vase! I don't want another fish, just this one... although we are thinking of getting a pair of birds once we're done painting our apartment. We already have a cat so we're filling up the place with animals!

Miraculously, the cat is simply not interested in the fish. The vase is where he can't reach it anyway, but even when I showed him the fish he wasn't interested. I bet he'll be interested in the birds though.

hehe he looks like he's clapping his fins in the pic.

just don't get mountain white clouds... they're small and easy to take care of ... but life span is 3-10 YEARS. my fam back home in rochester has one that is 7 yrs old... as in... we fully expected to have a fun fishy pet for, you know, a year or two... um, WRONG... it outlived the hamsters, the bird, the mouse... it ate the other fish in its bowl and we renamed him charles manson. he swims around plotting everone's death. hahah... well... maybe not...but it appears so.

pinot... because he's black? pinot noir?? i like it!

We're gonna change his water every other Sunday... that's okay, right?

And I know he looks black in the pic, but he's actually a beautiful red color, the same color as pinot noir. I just couldn't get any pics with decent lighting at night. Maybe I'll try to snap another one today!

I used to know a girl named Petty. She was born small, and her mum was a recent immigrant; her greek--> english dictionary said that the translation for small was petty soo...that's her name!

agreed, i had a crappy carnival comet goldfish that was over 16-years old when we gave him to a brat cousin. died within a week.

btw "alpha" would be a good name too.

here's a couple of online stores i order from (reef tanks are my hobby):
drsfostersmith.com (good selection and customer service for fish and other animals; cats, dogs, birds, herps, etc.)
petsolutions.com (better pricing than drs and also carry every pet type but not as many choices)

there are more but i don't want to spam pet supplies here.

either way though, you should be 25%~60% cheaper than traditional brick & mortar pet stores. the issue would be to factor in freight, so buying just one thing wouldn't be worth it.

Every other is a bit little for the small tank he has... is it 2 gal. about? A bit hard to see. I'd, personally, do it weekly... but we all know how I'm a bit terrified of having anything go wrong to the point of insanity... so two weeks might be fine. Just see how his water is fairing after a week and see how it goes.

He's got a little over a gallon in there, maybe a gallon and a half. All right, we'll make changing it a part of our Sunday routine. It's just a pain because we have to use bottled water; L.A. tap water would kill him.

The cat has discovered him finally. There's no way the cat can reach him (he's old, fat, and has arthritis) but he loves to sit on the back of the couch and stare at him. Heh heh... wait'll we get the birds!

I've had Jack for a few months. He is super healthy, and I use the tap water...with water conditioner.

Tap water doesn't kill fish if you leave it to set over two days. So fill something with the water on Friday and change on Sunday. Some snails aughta do the rest, and they're like 30 cents.

Snails? So we should set out the tap water from Friday to Sunday, and put a snail in the vase too? Won't the betta attack the snail? What does the snail do, what does it eat, and what kind should we get?

Oh, and we tried the mirror trick... didn't work! I don't know if he got desensitized to other bettas at the aquarium store or what, but we tried several times and he didn't seem to notice, even when he was looking right at it. Bummer. Would've been funny to see him flare up!

    1. Yes, snails. 2. Put the snail (or two, they're TINY) in the tank. 3. Nah, they pretty much leave 'em alone. They're small, slow and eat the bad stuff. 4. The snails eat the dirty stuff in water AND help keep the tank cleaner, longer... but don't take up much space. Plus they're cute. Get the itty bitty ones, not the huge ones. You'll see what I mean. They're like $.30, some places give 'em for free.

Oh, I looked it up... you want a trumpet snail.

    Small snippet:

    http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/snails.htm

Snails forage on left over food and graze on algae therefore a small colony should not be of concern. In fact, they are doing you a favour by eating excess food (and can be amusing to watch and even add to a more "natural" look in your aquarium!). Some species also help by burrowing through the substrate thus preventing compacting and dead spots and even to help dispose of dead fish. However, as with all living creatures, snails produce excreta and thus large colonies of snails can result in quickly deteriorating water quality. Some species do damage plants, and large numbers may look unsightly.
    http://www.e-aquarium.com.au/aquarium_snails.htm
Aquatic snails can perform valuable services to the aquarium owner. Uneaten fish food scraps can become snail food instead of polluting the water. Unsightly algae can also be consumed leaving your aquarium glass clean.

Snails can cause frustrations however. Aquatic plants can be decimated by a hungry snail with a taste for greenery. So too can an unprotected batch of fish eggs. Aquarium snails from wild sources can even harbor diseases that can infect fish and people.
Since I doubt you're breeding your fish or growing plants in his tank, they're more beneficial than not to you.

Well, he DOES have a live plant in there. And he loves it. He sleeps on the leaves and swims all around the stems to play, and he hides in the plant when he's startled. I'd hate for a snail to kill his plant.

A snail won't kill his plant since there'll be too much food and or dirt already in there from the fish. Since it's a small tank, the snail will have many other things to clean first... and a trumpet snail doesn't like plants as much as apple snails.
