Default What makes a safe home

I am looking for a little input here on how you feel safe in your home. Currently, I live with roommates on a block where I have neighbors that are cops on three sides. There are always cop cars out front, and save for the occassional break-in in the neighborhood I have always felt super safe.

Now I am moving to another city and I am leaning towards paying through the nose to live in a doorman building with its own parking. It is going to be tough, because school is going to be super demanding and balancing the school/work life is going to be difficult at best. My parents want me to live in the dorms, which are super cheap, but I am reluctant because it is in a bad neighborhood that I would not to drive through late at night on my way home from the club. I also do not want people at school to know about my work life. Ideas?

My metropolitan area has an online crime tracker available on the major newspaper's website. You can even search by neighborhood statistics. Even if your city doesn't have this online resource available, you definately can do a search on sexual predators.

I have a townhouse. The only thing on the 1st floor is the garage. I just pull in, walk into the house, lock the garage door, and go right upstairs. (No windows downstairs, so it would be harder to break in.)

If you can't afford your own place, rent a room from someone who has a dog. Its a major deterrant to burglars.

I rented a furnished bedroom + bath in an upscale neighborhood for much less than I would have paid for a one bedroom apartment. But be careful who you choose to live with- trust your intuition. You may want to put a lock on your door or password protect your computer or whatever. I found my former landlord on roommateclicks.com. We had a month to month lease- either one of us could choose to terminate it by giving the other 30 days notice but I stayed there for almost a year.

We have 3 dogs and roommates, plus the neighbors just happen to park a police car in front of their house.

Most importantly, IMO, is that we have great lighting around the house. It's a pain when we are trying to sleep, but it's practically daylight when we come home at night.

What someone else said about the dogs, I hear it's burglar deterrent numero uno! Very glad that my downstairs neighbors have like 5 of em. I also dig that my apt is second floor so a ground assault is highly unlikely, also it's a corner unit with one side facing a busy street, and a police station is a half mile up said street. Also, it has well-lit exterior stairs, as opposed to interior corridors which baddies prefer to lurk in.

Still, it's not perfect- my living room windows are large and accessible from the exterior landing. To minimize threat there I put window screws on em so they can only be opened a little- you can buy the things at home depot or lowe's and they're cheap and also handy for kid-proofing windows. My other pet peeve was discovered when I deadbolted my door and took a long shower- my roomie came home then and I couldn't hear her knocking, so her bf 'broke in' by stepping from our stairs onto our garage roof to get in via the balcony. I'm going to put a trellis over the balcony opening that faces our garage roof to secure that.

Don't get a dog to deter burglars... get a dog because you want one you can love.

I'd pay through the nose, personally.

PS ^^^ Those window lock things can be jarred SO easily. A few hits with the window and they're down for the count.

I live on the fifth floor of a building with a concierge. I do feel safe but if i owned the place i would probably have the front door re inforced and add a couple of deadbolts but there is no way anyone can get in from the windows.

personally, if you live in a building, you have got to have underground parking and a doorman. It's not worth your safety to save the extra couple hundred bucks a month

Personally, if I had to chose, I'd pay through the nose just to feel safe. Get a roomie if you have to.

I feel safe because... well, I didn't even know the neighborhood. But, it was quiet and the office people were nice and there weren't scary-looking people wandering around. My instinct was right. There's always a security guard around, all the apartments come with alarms, and I've never had any problems at ALL.

I can understand why you wouldn't want to live at the dorms if they're unsafe... plus people would most likely figure out that you're a stripper... Not to mention that it's pretty impossible to study with people popping in all the time (or so I have heard).

Actually window locks can be very secure, depending on whether you tighten them with fingers or a wrench. Do it with fingers and they can be jarred, though it'll be noisy to do so and may provide enough bother for the perp to move on. Wrench-tighten into the steel frame and they won't budge, but, kinda a fire hazard.

Also, you can put 'burglar bushes' outside your windows like roses, mesquite, or any other bulky/ouchy plants.
