Default Eating Disorder Video (Renfrew Center)

    This documentary aired on HBO.
It's called Thin, and takes place at The Renfrew Center in Florida (where i think tart is going?!)

This link is to the 1st segment (1-11). the rest are on the right side (2-11) then (3-11) and so on.

I also want to warn anyone who has a eating disorder: it might be triggering and I wouldn't suggest watching it if you are trying to recover.

I hope anyone that stays there can have the option of not being on camera. I wouldnt want someone making a documentary of me in my darkest moments trying to recover. I wish all the women in the video well.

Wow that was intense. Polly really struck my heart, she seems so lost.

Egads that really brought back a lot of memories of hospitals and residentials.... Seems like the nicer of places though....

Wow - what a sad thing to see. It seems like such a tough battle to fight...not impossible to overcome, but difficult nonethless since it's easy to hide it or lie about it.
It's really an addiction like anything else and takes a whole lifetime of commitment to get under control.

I've watched the whole documentary and it does show purging. I'm fairly sure the first segment doesn't though.

God, I had an ex with anorexia. It helped me learn that an eating disorder encompasses your whole life, and that it's a constant struggle for control. He was a fat kid who got mercilessly bullied, so he put the fence in defense mechanism for the rest of his life. He's highly delusional, brags to anyone about anything, and eating out with him is something I refuse to do because he's just so obsessed with it.

I saw that whole documentary a few months ago when it was on my TV. It made me want to be skinny like them, but it also made me realize how I'm never going to be so far gone as that, except in intention perhaps. I could never live with a tube coming out of my navel, for example.

I feel so lucky after watching this. My parents did a lot of things wrong but I never have had food issues. I was given healthy choices as a child so I make healthy choices as an adult. I have junk food sometimes, but that is what junk food is for, to have occasionally.

geesh i watched it til the last one where noone seemed to be doing better afterwards..youd think hbo with all its mulah would of been able to donate each girl with like 50k and send them to private treatment or something..
The thing about that place all the counselors looked like porkers.. it would be hard if i had issues to have someone id rather die than look like telling me why i needed to eat like them... and the food looked like slop.. rolls in plastic wrap.. floppy lettuce in a strafoam or how its spelled bowl.. and the episode where the girl had a piece of gooey frozen dinner type pizza in front of her.. I dont know i guess its what insurance pays for but id think an open kitchen having them make real food eating on real plates.. making food seem more a healing ritual than a forced thing.. and things like spa treatments and yoga to get more body awareness which goes hand in hand with feeding your body.. guess thats only for the rich

Those are really good points, pennygirl. If those people tried to tell me what to do, I'd have an issue getting better as well.
I didn't see much positive reinforcement, just imposed dogmas and guilt tactics. And what was up with them just kicking Polly out for not being honest? So all women with ED and control issues who lie don't deserve treatment? I think they just couldn't handle her personality, and that's sad to think they may not be equipped with the staff to handle someone who isn't even a threat.

Maybe it works for some? But it was sad to see that no one really got better. Almost all of the women purged the DAY they left.

I watched some of it also, and I agree with Pennygirl, the food looked disgusting, and it was terrible watching Polly have to put away that whole cupcake. I didn't really see the point of that. And also it seems like a pretty weird idea to put a bunch of girls with EDs together in groups like that. It seems like it would be so triggering just to be around other girls like that. Anyway, it was very sad and I truly hope our Tart can make some big changes being there.

It is insane, but like Mollyzmoon said, watching it just made me want to be as skinny as them. I know that's crazy and I know it don't look good - but what can I say...

It makes me mad that most insurance policies will only cover eating disorder patients for a certain amount of time. A couple of the girls were clearly not ready to leave the center, but had to because their insurance policies ran out. I watched the whole thing and the ending was depressing-that place probably costs a fortune and it didn't really help any of those girls long term. Hopefully Tart has better luck there.

I agree with pennygirl also. A lot of the staff members there were obese. No wonder those girls didn't want to eat-I wouldn't want to look like that either. They should have healthier looking role models working there.

Well I had to stop watching when the first girl got on the scale. 85 pounds? It looks really sick, you can see she is dying.

Her arms were so rail thin, it's such a terrible sickness.

I hope it's not inappropriate for me to add a comment here too, but FWIW I found a fantastic book on the subject called "Hunger Pains" by Mary Pipher. It's about modern womens' "tragic quest for thinness," and I read it to learn about some of the struggles of some of the women in my life. So yeah, I read the book from my male point of view, but found it to be tremendously insightful and easy to read.

Also, be assured that because of HIPAA and confidentiality laws, all persons in treatment would have to consent to be used in any film.

    Thanks for this link!
