Default Do commercials ruin songs for you?

I get so pissed when some of favourite tunes are bastardized in commercials. Possibly I should just stop watching TV, at all. My boyfriend doesn't, and when he first told me this, I thought it was a smug, holier-than-thou, vegan thing of him to say. That may be the case, but I see the value in such a stance more and more...

Seriously, these songs like those by the Brazillian Girls, Lily Allen, and just now Peter Bjorn and John. Noooo!!! Once those songs become part of a cellphone jingle, or Axe shower gel, they suck forever. At least they do for me. They definitely lose their spot on my iPod playlists. Damn those marketers...with their devilish desire to be topical and hip. They should be relegated to the crappy seventies pop songs or something. Or better yet, make up their own crappy jingles.

Sorry. I just realized how much it bothers me. I'm becoming more like my crazy old relatives every day I think...

Yeah, I was so pissed when they used CCR's "Fortunate Son" for a Wrangler jeans commercial. Did those a-holes even bother to figure out what the song meant? A-holes!

And, oh, "Smoke on the Water" for a car commercial! What the fuck. It seriously made me wanna go postal. I mean, that is a holy song and those bastards defiled it.

    (Sorry, rant mode off now.)

I don't think they ruin songs. Sometimes they make me irritated and never want to listen to songs I used to love. But other than that, I think using catchy songs is a good marketing maneuver (sp.?).

Sometimes I love it. I've found a lot of good songs to dance to from commercials. If you're wondering about any, adtunes.com has a forum.

I love the new Mercedes commercial's song...don't remember it right now.

Yeah the song that goes "turn around, bright eyes" is stuck in my head from that damned commercial, can't remember what it is advertising, just the song!

I don't really pay attention. I usually change the channel when a commercial comes on. I did like Dirty Vegas after the Mitsubishi commercial, tho.

This is one of my pet peeves!!!

Nothing makes me feel older than hearing my favorite songs from HS used to sell products. And they always do it so that it sounds corny too.

"Melt with You" to sell Burger King. "Mmm-mmm-mmm..." That song was definitive in my day.

And the worst of all for me; using "Pretty in Pink" to sell the pink Razr...ugh! That is my favorite band and now they're just sell-outs to the commercial world.

I think the most hilarious commercial song was for a shredded cheese commercial I saw last year. "They're Crum-believable" (EMF's Unbelievable). I almost died laughing.

Not in the least. At best it simply reminds me of a song I haven't heard in a long time, then I go find it and listen to it and hopefully incorporate it in some of the DJing if possible.

Doesn't ruin the song for me in the least, and I like it that way.

I hate it when they use the latest popular songs.

There was this really gross ad here in Melbourne recently - it was an ad for alcohol and it played "satisfaction" - I think thats the name of the song, and it showed a tongue jumping out of this guys head and moving along the floor and it went and got the alcoholic beverage. It ruined that song for me esp coz the tongue grossed me out.

Oh I was a fan of "Foldgers Crystals" by RunDMC and Metallica before the company added "The best part of waking up..." to it.

    *Sigh* ruined forever.

Yes I hate it! There's this one techno song (don't know the name of it) that used to be on a burger king commercial. Now whenever I hear it at work, I think of fucking burger king.

Commercials don't but customers do! If I dance for a custy and have a bad experience I will usually correlate it to the song. OR if I say I loooove a certain song and they sing it, it is never the same to me.

8 out of 10 times I hear stuff I forgot about or didn't know about at all that I want to use at work. Commercials have become a Gods Sent for me anymore.

    I like your boyfriend already.

Seriously, mainstream television is evil. The commercials are quite literally propaganda. They don't really give a flying fuck if you like the winner of 'American Idol', or who fucks whom on 'Temptation Island'.

They want you to buy detergent. And tampons. And deodorant. And macho cars that go way faster than you are allowed to drive anyway.

But oh, look--if you buy that car you'll get laid!

The songs are ruined when they are used to sell greasy burgers, hell yes. Most Americans are so used to seeing it done that they don't even think about it.

But try this--don't watch any TV whatsoever, for at least 6 months. None.

Then see what you think of it.

When I go to friends' houses and have a few drinks or maybe a little bong hit, and some hokey sitcom comes on, I never laugh. What the hell for, because they want me to? Because 9 out of 10 dentists say I should? These shows are lame as hell, really--even the 'good' ones are fucking stupid, inevitably predictable, and utterly devoid of any real style or imagination.

But when the commercials come on, if I'm in the right mood, I'll be rolling on the fucking floor. Why? Because they are so contrived, trite, and insulting, all I can do is laugh--or piss them off forever by tossing their TV off the balcony. So instead they look at me like some sort of alien--what the hell is so funny about Maxipads, this guy is weird...

The worst ever use of music in a commercial, though, was when my hero George Clinton, who spent years ripping Burger King a new asshole ('give yourself as break today, have it your way...sucker'), knuckled under to their no doubt astronomical payoff and sold out to the filthy swine.

yeah I have the same reaction. I think the one that bugged me the most was when ac/dc sold out to a cell phone company.

My DJ played INXS "New Senatsation" today and all I could think of was "'hmm, I wanna join Bally's".

That's why I never had any respect for MTV, possibly the worst thing that's ever happened to music in the history of mankind, except maybe church organs. I literally cannot watch it.

    We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour tvs

That is what it's all about, make no mistake.

And didn't even Dire Straits sell out to the motherfuckers?

No wonder we see spectacles like Kanye West pitching a hissy fit, or 50cent threatening to quit when you know damned well he never will, unless maybe someone shoots him again.

It's not art, it's fucking hype. With maybe a catchy beat tossed in here and there, sure--but with one real purpose--making rich producers richer.

They aren't artists, they are hucksters, salesmen--conning skinny, pimply faced suburban punks into believing they are being rebellious and defiant by listening to them bragging endlessly about how many people will line up to kiss their ass. Meanwhile, they are kissing the fat asses of the producers, and auto salesman all over the world.

I don't think ppl who don't watch tv are holier than thou vegans. It most likely just does not occur to them!

Usually I don't like the top 40 they play in commericials, but get depressed when I hear The Cure Lovesong.

Speaking of car commercials that ruined my WHOLE DAY, I was at the laundromat the other day, and don't even know what was even on the tv, but every single commercial break they played this one with the song "this is the way we WASH our clothes, wash our clothes, wash our clothes, so early in the morning." WHAT THE FUCK?!

Nice rants DJoser, very extremely true...and what is up with that 5 gum that looks like a credit card? You bet that's on purpose...damn gen Y'ers!

When it starts occuring to me I haven't watched tv in 4-6 months, I force myself to turn it on in case I'm missing something. But the attention span is what prevents me from watching in the first place...it's like programming based AROUND commercials, I can never watch the entirety of anything, I'm always flipping during commercials. DVD box sets all the way!

My boyfriend is so awesome like that too...and he even makes the effort to look at the tv guide for the week, and record all the good shows (we love City Confidential! Crime stories, A&E, PBS, Discovery/History etc.) on videotape so we can fast forward the commercials!

Yes and no. They have caused me to cringe at songs that were overplayed to begin with. But they've also helped me rediscover songs I had completely forgotten about. In some cases, they've helped me find songs I didn't know the artist and/or title of.

Sigh. I used to be hardcore and punk rock and anti-selling out, and now I don't even think selling out exists anymore.

I think it's funny when I recognize a song on an ad from Brit bands that no one here knows of. Like, Razorlight got more play on a car commercial than on radio in the U.S.

I did sit straight up and say "You are fucking KIDDING!" the first time I saw the Mitsubishi Outlander commercial with the Fall song in it.

So, no, they don't ruin songs for me. Molly, I would like to suggest that you develop edgier tastes, 'cause all of that nice pleasant pop is exactly what ad folks are looking for. Feist, Wilco, if it's mellow, it sells. Not records, you know, but iPods and Volkswagens.

Also, I think it's hilarious that Of Montreal made an Outback commercial.

But that Volkswagen commercial that used Pink Moon was actually pretty great. Seriously. It was like a little tiny movie and who couldn't relate to it?
