Default I want this abandoned cat

Theres this adult male lean orange cat in my apartments I want. I moved in right after his owners moved and they didn't take him with them. He's grown on me and as much as I would love to adopt from the pound this orange cat is right here and homeless. Everyone just feeds him around the apartments but it would be nice to give him a home and proper care.

How can I get him to come to me and let me be his momma? I have to get him neutered and it would be a nice addition to my already one adult male cat family. My own cat likes other cats as long as they are nice and they get along pretty well already. Help me I want to adopt this homeless cat. What can I do?

Start by feeding him once or twice a day. Then maybe let him into your apartment. Just slowly coax him into your life.

^^^ Yup, what I was going to say. Make sure he sees you giving him the food, and hang out within his eyesight while he eats it. After a few days, squat as low as you can and offer out your hand, palm up. He should sniff it thoroughly and then give you some indication as to whether you can pet him. Continue this routine for a few days, and keep moving the food closer and closer to your front door. After a week or so, see if he'll come in the house and let you pet him without sniffing first. At that point, he's yours!

Do NOT bring him in the house if you have another cat. He could have any number of diseases that he could pass to yours. It's a slim chance, but a very real one. You have no idea if he's up to date on his immunizations. Do the above mentioned things, make friends with him, and then make an appointment with a vet to have him neutered and get him a checkup.

I'd not let him into the house before you get him tested at the vet. Diseases could quickly be caught by your other kitty, and that would certainly not good.

Leave food in a carrier and catch him. Take him to the vet to get him checked out and then bring him home.

    Good luck!

I tamed a completely feral cat, Old Tom, this way:

Sit outside near where you see him. Have some delicious food with you--tuna or hamburger, not cat food. Cat food is too squishy and messy.

When he comes by, toss some food to him. If he runs, sit still and wait for him to come back and eat it. If hever comes back, leave the food there and leave it for him to eat.

When he does not run, but stays and eats the food, toss him a second bit, a little closer to you. Keep this up until you can drop the food right in front of you and he will eat it.

While he is eating, bend down and pet him. Keep this up for several days.

If you can lure him into a carrier and shut it while he is eating, that is good. Otherwise, you may have to catch him and put him in the carrier. Heavy gloves that go WAY up your arms are needed here, because he may turn on you and fight. He will not be happy in the carrier. Do not let him out. Even tame cats are not happy in carriers.

Do not put a leash on him. I made this mistake, and Old Tom chewed on and swallowed the leash while in his cage at the vet. I ended up having to choose whether to put him to sleep or have abdominal surgery to remove the leash from his intestines.

After getting his shots and being castrated, Old Tom became quite a sweet cat who would sleep on my lap. He is buried in one of my previous back yards.

you need to do it slowly. feed him outside, closer and closer to your front door. try and do it at the same times of the day every day. stand there while he eats, if you can. do -not- try to pet him if he seems scared. forcing yourself on him or putting him in a scary situation is going to make things worse. you want a cat who WANTS to be inside with you, not one who feels trapped. just let him get used to you being close first. you can move a little closer each time. you'll have to judge when to try and pet him on your own. after he's comfortable eating with you there, move the food just inside of the front door and leave the door open. once you've taken this step, don't go back. he'll get up the courage to "come and get it" eventualy... although it may take a few trys. after a few times of him eating inside comfortably, try closing the door and see how he deals with it. the objective is to have feel him more and more comfortable inside your house, untill you can just keep him inside. once you've decided it's time not to let him outside anymore, you should read up on converting feral cats into house cats. it can be a chore at first. you need plenty of things for him to scratch on and a litter box (you might have to put dirt in it first to get him to use it). it's also wise to get some cat grass. you can find it at most pet stores and even some department stores. it helps them digest food and it can ease a feral cats nerves because it allows him to do something inside that he is used to doing outside.. gnawing on grass. you'll also want to get him a full physical and have him fixed so that he doesn't "mark" his new place. i know the whole process sounds like an ordeal, but moving at his pace is REALLY the best way to do things. you might want to talk to some of your neighbors, if they're friendly, and let them know your plan. if you can get them to stop feeding him that will help a lot.

    good luck.

    *IMPORTANT ADD*

do not. DO NOT allow him near your cat (keep her in a different place at first) untill you have him checked by a vet. also, wash your hands before you touch your cat. FIV is the feline version of aids and it is very serious. many feral cats have the disease. you don't want to put your cat at risk.

I love this. I really love hearing when people adopt abandoned kitties or rescue animals. I actually work at a petsmart where we only have rescue animals for adoption. Maybe if you call up a petsmart, there animal adoptpon center may give you some more helpful pointers. =)
