Default It's all greek to me

My guys mom wants to meet at a greek resturant in an hour. I wanna know a bit about the food and culture so I look extra smart, and can help her if she has any problem ordering. Whaddya know? help me out. Common greek dishes that are great, little known facts, whatever. I've got untill 3:15, it's 2:00 now.

Hummus and pita or dolmas (grape leaves with stuff inside with olives oil) are good appetizers. If you are veggie ask if the dolmas are vegetarian. I usually order a vegetarian dish that has rice. If they have lentil soup I would try it. Lentil soup at greek places is usually very good and different. Chicken dishes are usually flavored with onion and other spicies, but not to garlicy. Falafel are fried patties of ground garbonzo beans. They are delicious on a platter or in a pita wrap with taziki sauce (yummy yogurt sauce). Alioli is a super dupur garlic sauce that you can add to stuff at your own risk- not if you are dancing later!!

Moussaka is the national dish of Greece. It's also fucking delicious! My favourite. It's lamb (or beef) and eggplant in tomato sauce covered in thick Bechamel sauce and baked.

Spanakopita is a good appetizer...filo pastry stuffed with spinach and feta.

Saganaki is fried cheese. I hate it, but it's a popular appetizer.

As shasta mentioned, Dolmathes are really good...kind of vinegar-y, though, so not for everyone.

i just generally always go for the lamb at greek restaurants.

Ditto on the spanikopita. And definitely lentil soup! I used to go to a couple of Greek restaurants and my favorite meal was a spanikopita and a bowl of lentil soup with balsamic vinegar.

Agreed, besides the common/popular gyros pita (when pronounced properly sounds like eeros peetah) souvlaki is my fave, great when you're drunk!. Ate tons of Greek & Turkish in Germany (go figure).

You mean you don't pronounce it G-eye-roh?

And I always prefered falafel when I was drunk. Used to be the most awesome place on MacDougal in the Village right next to my favorite bar. How convenient!

If drinks are ordered, don't get the retsina flavored ones. They taste like turpentina!

Other than that, man, I'm starving now.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

Souvlaki and Gyros are yummy as hell, though there is so much more to Greek cuisine.

Try Haloumi, another fried cheese, though I believe it's Cyprian many Greek restaraunts serve it. Saganaki is good too

If it is a good Greek restaraunt it will have Taramasalata. A dip made from salted fish roe...mmm. So good with olive oil floated on top and served with pita. SO hard to find in the US

    Mousakka

    Pastichio (Greek lasagna)

The Greeks do amazing things with lamb and octopus, and whiting, and spinach

This sounds sooo good. I love salty things. I'll have to see if I can find it in NYC somewhere!

ETA: Found two places in NYC. Molyvos and Beyoglu. Don't know these places but next time I'm in, I'm gonna try. Hopefully, someone will know at least one of them.

Its probably too late now, but if you tell me the restaurant, I probably know it and can make recommendations. I love Greek food. I gained sooo much weight the week I spent in Crete!

So I went to .... damn, forgot the name, but it's between 7th and 8th and colorado st. - for Katrine-

I had the Mousaka, made with eggplant, and it was wonderful. It was served with two Spinikopita, but they called them spinich pastries on the menu, so I got to look smart when I called them by their real name.

Oh, and a chicken and lentil soup came with it, but I don't like chicken, so I gave my soup away. All in all it was very good. I will be having Greek food again. I'm dissapointed that Dolmas didn't seem to be on the menu, but maybe it was just a lunch thing, or maybe I didn't look hard enough.
