    Default Detox Dilemma

    Hey ladies, how's it going?

I need a little advice in regards to the detox I will be starting on Monday.

I've decided to go with the 7-10 day detox diet that you drink only a concoction of maple syrup, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and water; I whipped some up and tried a tiny sip last night (just to see what I'm in for) and it tastes awful. So bad, in fact, that I may just do water instead. But anyway, that's not my issue.

My problem is self-control; I don't really have it. I do little things to help myself with it, though. For example, when I go grocery shopping, I only buy healthy foods; then, when I am at home and feel a need to eat, I won't scarf down a bag full of chips and instead will eat fruit or yogurt, etc. This tends to work pretty well for me. ("Out of sight, out of mind" philosophy!) That said, when I do my shopping this week (the week of the detox) I won't really buy anything except the aforementioned ingredients and maybe some sparkling water.

What am I to do, though, when I can't have that kind of control???

I currently have 2 jobs and go to school fulltime. I don't think this will be too big a deal at school as I am able to focus there on schoolwork and lectures. I am a little worried about being at the club because, though I rarely eat there, I do take (many) shots/night. It's not that I need to drink, persay, but that it's kind of become a habit. I'm rarely even drunk (I guess I am able to sweat it out dancing onstage before it really affects me) but I still feel that urge to take shots with my friends and customers.
To be honest, I am mostly worried about my self-control at my other job. I'm a nanny for a 1 year old and the people I work for ALWAYS have the yummiest goodies (cookies, brownies, fancy cheese, great sandwich meats, noodle dishes, etc.) and they always tell me, "Eat whatever you'd like!" Well, mostly out of boredom, I do. I mean come on! I'm hanging out with a nonverbal 1 year old for 7 hours straight-BORING! Lol. So anyway, excuse the long post, but how in the heck can keep myself in check there? Especially when the cravings hit big time (which I expect on the 3rd day of the detox as that is what I have read)?

    Thanks for your insight!

I've done this detox before, it's easy for the first two days then it's really hard because you just want to chew something, but you can do it. Always have the juice on you, whenever you get a craving drink, drink drink drink. I would initially make it every time I got hungry then I realized I just had to make a biiiig batch each morning because you really need the lemon to be fresh. You'l do fine. I dont really know what to say about the self control and eating... Just stuff your face with juice when you feel a craving for junk food or whatever. But please be careful when you start this detox. You can make yourself very sick if you arent already pretty helthy. For the week before you start the detox try eating like 90% fruits and veggies every day and dont mix fruits and veggies. either eat veggies and wait up between 35 and 45 min (unless it's driend fruit, then wait an hour) before eating any veggies. if you eat veggies wait 4 hours before eating fruit again. I'd try eating veggies from the time you wake up until like 6 or 7 then at like 8 start eating veggies. it will really help you one transition the control to the detox and two keep you from getting sick durring the detox. Sorry this is like a million miles long, but it really helped me when i did the detox. and GOOD LUCK!!

I cant remember where I read it but Apnea (the model) did it and kept a day by day journal of how it went for her... I'll look for it for you.

Oh wow, thanks! I didn't really think about some of the stuff you mentioned-like the fruits and veggies thing-til you said it!

Luckily, I am pretty healthy already; I don't eat shit (all of the time!) and I work out pretty regularly so.....hopefully, this won't be too bad. I have started cutting out caffeine as of yesterday b/c I knew that'd be just another hurdle to deal with once I sart the detox. I am a caffeine junkie and was pleasantly surprised that I didn't feel too badly yesterday after having barely any (just in my green tea).

So, I figure I will take your advice and basically stick with fruit smoothies for most of my meals until I start the detox.

By the way, you sound like this was a good experience for you; did you benefit a lot from it? (i.e. Feel healthier, have more energy, lose any weight, clear up skin, etc.)

    Thanks again for the insight!

Oh, p.s., I'm assuming, at least initially, I'm going to feel very tired and run down as my body begins eliminating toxins; should I plan not to work out, stick with my work out no matter what, or just play it by ear? Also, would it be dangerous to go to the sauna while doing this?

I am starting, or rather, I have started this today.

yesterday I ate super light, mainly veggies, but some fish too.

I have grade B maple syrup from publix (as is the lemon and pepper). I will keep you posted on how it goes. I plan on doing all my normal stuff, like work, etc.

I found the journal... scroll down it starts on Nov. 9... It's interesting to read http://www.apneatic.com/journal1106.php

And as for my experience, I didn't feel healthier per say because I am a pretty healthy person, I guess a little bit and I did have more energy, but mostly I did found it easier to eat a lot more healthily after doing it. As for weight loss I honestly don't really remember, I didn't weigh myself much at that time. I wasn't working out when I did it, just doing the run around that is my life. I would guess do what you can and don't push yourself too hard. I dont know what your workout routine is so I can't really say.

I have done this cleanse 4 times. Each time was about 14 days. I will not do it ever again! All of the lemon juice messed upthe enamel on my teeth. The last time my gums visibly seperated for my teeth! Gross! My dental health is worth way more to me than doing this cleanse. I always rinsed my mounth with water after the drinks, but this still happened. Be careful!

Whoa, scary! Shasta, I never would've imagined something like that happening! Hmm, I will still do it (at least once) but pay extra close attention to the reactions ALL of my body has.

Sunni, I too have bought all of the ingredients at Publix so we'll be, literally, drinking exactly the same stuff...."Lucky" Us!

Oh, btw, I mentioned before that I was "pleasantly surprised" that I wasn't experiencing really bad headaches from quitting the caffeine cold-turkey.....well, I spoke too soon....I've had one today. Boo. Fortunately, it's not Horrible and will probably go away with a nap.

So, anyway, I find all of this stuff really interesting and keep coming up with new questions so here's one for ya'll:
I started my period today. Will that effect, adversely or otherwise, my detox????

Are you planning on drinking ONLY this concoction for two weeks? Because you'll probably feel tired and dizzy not from "toxins" leaving the body but moreso from lack of carbs and vitamins. Whatever the case, take all your vitamin supplements, and maybe consider doing the cleanse for a shorter period of time. A few days should be sufficient to get your bowels, skin, and general health refreshed.

^^^Yeah. I feel like there is no way I could work like this .

I don't know what it is, it can't be a lack of calories, because I have probably had 600 calories so far today in maple syrup, but I had to take two naps and I felt kind of dizzy-weird when I woke up. Probably low blood sugar. Tomorrow I will pick up some fresh samantha or something for work.

Try a raw fruit/juice fast instead! It tastes yummy (unlike master cleanse), and you have variety. Do you have a juicer? it is important that the juice is fresh, not from a bottle. I would 100% recommend trying this first. You will have the same results and it will probably be a lot easier for you too!

If you only do water you will have an EXTREMELY hard time working 2 jobs and focusing at school. I felt much to weak to do anything other than hang out around the house while doing a short water fast a few years ago.

Why would you do this to yourself? Its like self-torture. No one I personally know has lasted more than 4-5 days. Your body doesn't need to do this!

Hmmm, I'm thinking I will do this 5 days (Monday-Friday, possibly just 4 Mon-Thurs) rather than 7, 10, or 14 as is the norm (at least according to what I've read.)

Katrine, I'm doing it for several reasons:

    1) I feel cleansed mentally and I feel I'm in the perfect mindsight to cleanse physically.I've been through A LOT just in the past few months, have recently moved on from everything, and am feeling strong(er) mentally and, therefore, I feel it's a great time to physically get on the same page.

2)I've always wanted to try this

3)I'm seriously considering cutting ALL meat out of my diet (still obtaining necessary protein from other sources) and I'd like to feel that I'm starting out "fresh".

Does that all makes sense? Don't get me wrong; if I feel literally SICK I will not force myself to stick with it (I'm far too concerned with efficiency in my other "endeavors" to get TOO caught up in a daiet/detox) but I think the aformentioned benefits are worth it-at least to try.

I suppose I'm asking a lot of questions because I've never tried it borfore and I just want to know what to expect in order to be successful.

Thanks everybody for the opinions and advice!!!!!

Just want to point out that you do not really need to make sure you have much protein in your diet. Your stomach will convert your food into the protein that you need. The protein that you eat isn't the kind of protein your body uses anyway.

Roullette, really? Damn, I feel silly. Why does everyone always say something like "Make sure you eat get enough protein (beans, nuts, etc.) if you're not eating meat!" whenever I mention it? Is it just a common mistake that people think you need to?

^^^ "Is it just a common mistake that people think you need to?" It had been told to us by food manufacturers and the govt and whatnot for aaaages and since we were all kids. Think about the logic in it... "Drink milk so you grow up to have big strong bones" What do cows eat and drink? Grass and water. I mean now so much of the shit they eat is genetically modified but my point is the same. Gorillas only eat fruits and veggies and look how big and strong they are. We just dont need the amount of protein pushed on us because like I said it isn't the protein that our bodies need. I dont know if I've said it on here before but check out a book called Fit For Life it will seriously tell you everything you ever wanted to know about how our bodies use food.

I hear ya! What you said makes sense....I guess my Mom just always said it because that's hers did and hers and so and so on.

To be completely honest with everyone on here....I failed my detox attempt. The first day I started. I was soooooooo hungry! (I bought a pizza and ate all of it except the crust-oops!)

So anyway, I am going to attempt the detox again but probably a different one because that concoction of water, maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper was just so nasty (and I thought I wasn't THAT picky!)

Any others I might find a little easier to drink?

    Thanks for the help!!!!

I've tried the Master Cleanse before and failed on all counts because I could not stay away from food even if my life depended on it.

At first, I tried to do it gradually by cutting down processed food before moving onto raw foods only so I could start the detox. Didn't work because I couldn't keep my hands off the banned foods. It's like the more I tried to restrict myself, the more I wanted it.

Then I tried to go straight onto the Master Cleanse, cold turkey. And guess what, it didn't work either. I lived on only the maple syrup drink for about half a day when I totally gave up and gorged a whole fridge food of food. With several hours of classes during the day and having to put up with a growling stomach, the only thing on my mind the entire time was food so I had to give in.

Good luck and hope your diet goes much better than mine! :p

Huh? Your stomach cannot convert a food into something it is not. It cannot convert food into protien. Either that food contains protien or not. Protein is a very important part of the diet. Milk contains calcuim, another important thing to have in your diet. You body cannot convert food into calcium. Either you eat something that has calcium in it, or you dont. But a lot of other sources contain calcuim, actually more than milk contains. I'm not sure what..but I know a lot of veggies have calcuim in them. I think espicially green leafy veggies.

Good point. But not correct. Just about all the food you (hopefully) eat most contains protein, assuming it is meat or veggies. Protein is important but you're looking at it all wrong. For one thing protein is not built in the body by eating protein. Protein is built from the amino acids in food. The only extent to which protein is built from protein food is how well the the amino acids in that food are utilized. Animal protein, vegetable protein are just that animal and vegetable and animal, not human protein. The body cannot assimilate protein in its original state as eaten. The protein must first be digested and split into its component amino acids. The body can then use these amino acids to construct the protein it needs. All nutritive material is found in the plant kingdom; animals have the power to appropriate but never to form or create protein's source, the eight essential amino acids. Plants can synthesize amino acids from air, earth, and water, but animals, including humans, are dependant on plant protein - either directly, by eating the plant, or indirectly, by eating an animal that has eaten the plant. Think of all the strongest animals in the world, think of the ones we use for work... Elephants, Gorilla, Oxen, Horse, mules, camels, water buffalo, What do they eat? Leafy matter, grass, and fruit. They get the amino acids from these foods and change them into the protein their bodies need. Think of the carnivorous animals, only in cases of emergency will they eat other carnivorous animals. They instinctively eat animals that have eaten plant life.

Now I said before we cant produce the 8 essential amino acids. That is not to say that we do not produce amino acids, we do, there are I believe 23 acids total so I'd say we're doing pretty good. it's just those 8 that we need to get from plants or from animals that eat plants. The fact is you only lose about 23 grams of protein a day, and only need around 56 grams a day. That's roughly a pound and a half a month. It is very hard to be protein defficient. Have you ever met anyone who was protein defficent? When you get more than you need in protein that has to be broken down and distributed you have a lower amount of energy and all the excess gets stored as toxic waste, adding weight until you can create enough energy to get rid of it. I hope that made sense. PM me if you have any questions. or post them here I have no problem answering them, but I feel was are kinda threadjacking.

im doing my own version of the master cleanse involving
the lemonade (which i actually really like)
at least half my body weight in oz water
1 serving of psyllium husk twice a day (i have to mix it in 8 oz of crystal light to drink it)
    a prenatal multivitamin
spicy low sodium vegetable broth around lunch time
    tea whenever
    and steamed vegetables for dinner

i started yesterday and my stomach felt flatter when i woke up.
im hoping to loose some vanity weight before a photoshoot on the 28th.

Good luck with it! I tried it, and the control wasn't my problem-I stopped because the morning "salt water rinse" kept making me throw up. After about fourth day of spewing salt water all over my carpet, I said its not worth it.

Did it for 7 days, felt great, I've wondered if it would have the same detox effects WITHOUT the rinse, because thats where i had problems!
