Default question for all you homeowners

So, a little bit ago i had a flood in my basement. it was sucky to say the least and i ended up making a claim with my homeowner's insurance. they came out, and after appraisal, they gave me a 3k. My deductible is 1k so i net 2000 for the damage etc. (which i have yet to deal with *sigh*) i actually had to have a plumber and mason out to figure out if it was my problem or not, it was mine, not the city's, because the old lead line was leaking, out in the middle of the street. so after the plumber dug two feet into the wall to discern the foot-deep water flood- flowing at creek speed into my basement- would need to be dealt with by the city but that it was my issue for claiming, if i so chose. the mason came by to fix up the hole. i have to get a mildew/mold scrub for the floor (it's an unfinished basement) and had items down there that were damaged.

my question is: have any of you ever filed a claim? did your rates go up, like they do with car insurance? i have to show them every single receipt for everything and i wonder if, when i get the scrub, it's less than the allotted amount will they request money back? how does this work, any tips i need to know?

    thanks!!

    Love it!

I had a pipe burst in my house and my ins co gave me 2 options- either they would fix it with like materials, or they would give us money to handle it ourselves. We chose the latter option to put the labor money towards better materials, but anyway no, they didn't raise our rates. Perhaps if you make a lot of claims they would tho?

Well, I was a kid, like, 16, but our above ground swimming pool burst, and flooded the basement. My nedroom was in the basement. They paid for a whole new basement, pretty much. I got a brandnew bedroom. New walls, new carpet, new bed. The basement got a new washer and dryer. The only thing not replaced was the pool itself.

Probably not much help, btu I dont recall my mother bitchign baout rates going up. At the same time, somethign happened with the furnace, and black soot covered the walls. They also paid to repaint the whole house.

Made a claim for wind damage. Rates didn't go up.

First, you need to call the insurance adjuster and get him to estimate the damage and get at least 2 bids to fix the damage.
Typically, the insurance company will pay you on a "Cash Value" basis which means that you will get a check initially for the damage to contents and structure which will take into account depreciation. After you get it fixed, you should submit the final bill and they will release the rest of the funds so it will be fixed less your deductible.

Mold typically has a $10,000 cap so make sure that shit is killed.

To your other question. Yes, depending on your frequency of claims and the amount, you will lose your claim free discount, may be surcharged, and with 3 claims in 5 years probably canceled. You will then be free to be screwed by other insurance companies.

    Go to

to see what claims have been reported to the Central database for home and auto claims.
